Hundreds of galaxies (GALAXIES) all found in a random spot in the sky about 1/30th the diameter of the full moon.  The vastness of this universe is truly humbling.

That's the first time I've seen that actually.

If I could change my career at the snap of a finger, I'd be an astronomer.  There's just so much cool stuff out there to see.  I've been toying with the idea of buying a really good telescope the last couple of years, but know nothing about them, and even less about astronomy itself.

Most pictures taken by Hubble are actually black and white, then they let loose some nut on LSD to smear pretty colors all over so whenever I see one of these impressive pictures I just think to myself "shop'd".

Well, to a point.  Most of the pictures that they use to show off are taken in black and white, but the white represents one of 3 or 4 colors (essentially the equivalent of blue, green, yellow, and red).  They color in the white with the "proper" color and then overlay and combine them.  At this point the press people at STScI  (essentially the Hubble Institute) go to an artist they have on staff and say, "Make it look pretty."  So overall it's not real, but if you know where they started there is still some good information there.  For instance, in the Hubble Deep Field picture above any galaxy that looks blue is in fact mostly blue and full of large, hot, young stars.  It's all about trying to define what color really means, and that's a longer discussion.

I know Hubble produces good science I just don't like how they allow people to believe that these pictures are real, their beauty is mostly from the spectacular colours, which themselves are mostly bullshit.  If you were to somehow get close enough to that blue galaxy to see it with the naked eye it almost certainly wouldn't actually be blue.  At best they are using the color blue to denote heat or a high concentration of a particular molecule and at worst the artist who was told to make it look sexy just made it up.

Well, the light from the edges of the object is likely due to the 656.3nm emission line from single ionized hydrogen, which is in the red part of the spectrum.  Looking down through the middle of the object is likely a dense region of singly and doubly ionized oxygen, with emission line wavelengths of 323.7nm and a few lines ~500 nm, all of which are in the blue/blue-green part of the visible spectrum. 

Is that what the object would look like if we were there in space?  No.  The main reason for that is the gas is at such a low density there just isn't enough light being made for your eyes to pick up the individual colors.  But it's the closest approximation to what the emission line spectra are telling us about the object.  I also know that the artists typically (~50-75%) of the time talk to the astronomers who took the images to find out what colors they should work with.  The exact shade of red and blue are up to the artist, but  the starting colors are pretty much set in stone.  (Again, this is true for most pictures.  I have seen some of them with the colors completely out of whack, but they're good for the most part.)

The pretty colors aren't what impresses me.  The whole vastness of the universe thing, that's what I thought was noteworthy.  The whole "Hm, I live on a planet that can house billions of people just like me, and it's a speck of dust compared to a real planet like Jupiter, which itself is hilariously small next to the Sun, which is dwarfed by a lot of other stars, and our galaxy is composed of billions of those stars, and there are billions of galaxies, each full of billions of stars with their own planets.  Stressing about work seems kind of silly right now." thing.

Not really.  Ravandor does a good job of talking to this.  They are done to entertain the public as well as the scientists (hey, everybody likes pretty pictures), but they're based on something very real.  Astronomy is all about light - looking for both specific emission lines (such as the ionized gas mentioned), or absorbtion lines.  Astronomy relies heavily on light to determine properties of an object.  So, when taking photos of something they're likely to get multiple shots, each of which is "black and white", or more specifically, targetted to specific frequencies of light which do not always have to be visible.  Some shots are composites of visible light, but others aren't.  In some cases the light is redshifted enough to not even be visible, even if it originally was.  Or what is visible was originally above UV.  Or the contrast on something is so great that you can't see the greater structure.  When talking about astronomy, especially very far away things like the deep image, what an object "really" looks like requires some amount of definition.  I would argue that they are real, at least as real as we can get; it is showing actual structure of the objects photographed, with colors that are pretty but also mean something.

Painting minis: I need to upload a couple pics of some I painted. I was just getting good when my local supplier cut off my favorite paints, and I haven't found a good supplier since. Thus my abiding dislike of Games Workshop. (I previously used Polly S acrylics, they rocked). I've heard Ral Partha's paints were good, but they went out of business a while ago, too. Games Workshop's paints might be ok for plastics, but for lead and pewter, they go on more like a vinyl.

Fuck Bjorn the Fell Handed, fuck Ragnar "I have multiple invulnerable armor saves a turn!" Blackmane, fuck entire Terminator squads all armed with Assault Cannons and Cyclone Launchers that use the biggest template of that era.

When I was in the Navy a friend of mine played Space Wolves.  I really wanted to strangle his cheesetastic force most times.  Here I was making nice little armies of Orks and Chaos and Tyranids all allied by some amazing leaps of logic, yet it was 90% plain jane troops with bolters and deathspitters.  Almost no heavy weapons outside of a couple heroes with Vortex grenades since I didn't have Terminators or any devastator squad.  This guy had nothing but Termies, Dev squads, and every named hero in the fuckin codex.

And he was the ardent painter/modeller type.

Probably why I paint when I feel like it, and usually just enough to get me by.

My Tau are all 1 color spraypainted with a flocked base and a little silver detailing.  
My Tyranids are done, but they need a nice dark dip to look their finest.  They are too bright right now.  And lots of tards make stupid comments on them, all but proving gamers have no social skills.

My Orks?  The thought of painting them is hilarious.  My only painted models are ones I got second hand already painted.  Which beats the guy who plays Orks the most right now.  He doesn't even have any primer on his.  Of course me trading him 40 2nd edition Gretchin didn't help any.  (I like the Grots I won on ebay.  Converted Night Goblins.  They look great and now I want all my Grots like that!)

And they actually did make an actual close to the real 40K rules game.  Glory in Death for the N Gage.  You could play Eldar, Ork, Chaos, and Space Marines.  It wasn't bad, but being a little portable game limited it.  But its the closest they got to the real game.

In all honesty I don't think sidearms should be the subject of cosmetic alteration; it somewhat detracts from the point that a gun's only purpose is to kill people. It's not a toy and it's not a cute accessory; it should look like an ugly killing device to leave users in no doubt as to what it is for. However this is a message that a vast swathe of americans seem to have missed.

K9, I agree with you wholeheartedly, the problem is that alot of people (women) like to think the world is a happy, fluffy place full of nice people.  Unfortunately, it's not, but you try drumming into their skulls. Whatever it takes to get them to carry a weapon is fine by me, as long as they have the means to protect themselves and the training to know what to do when the time to use that means arises.

Also, it's a concealed handgun license, which means noone should ever see it unless they're about to get shot. (Or at the shooting range)  Imho, a black ugly scary thing in a womans purse might be spotted by another women who glances inside if its open for a moment, which would probably scare the shit out of them, because guns start shooting people on their own all the time.  If its pink and cute, it might not warrant a second glance, which means it stays concealed.

I've always thought playing W40K with lego men would be the affordable way to do it.

Its more 40K is too expensive than miniatures gaming is expensive.
GW sells Lord of the Rings figures rather cheap.  24 plastic soldiers and 2 metal command models run 37 bucks.  (25 for the plastics, and 12 for the 2 command figures.  Admitted, the command is a bit high, but the plastics balance it out to about 1.42 a mini.)
A company is doing plastic Celts and Romans for a historical game and they are 30 bucks for 48 figures.

Games Workshop prices stuff really wierdly.  Use and effectiveness in game actually effects how they price something, not sculpt or materials used.   :ye_gods:

Derail back to wh40k for a minute, I found a few of my minis. Some reps of different parts of my Space Wolf army, couldn't find any painted Termies. The two on the left are fully painted (I think...), the two one the right are almost done (as of about 9 years ago). The guy one in from the right just needs a backpack and the chainsaw and base painted (the parts I held it by while painting it up), the rightmost guy is cheap plastic/quick paint, his gun fell off in the box somewhere but he's 'done'. Shitty picture so it's hard to make out the detail. Oh well.

That figure on the far right is old school. I really need to dig out some of my figures at some point, I don't think they're up to the level of some of the ones posted in this thread but I was a bit of a perfectionist when I was collecting. I couldn't play for shit (also couldn't roll dice for shit) so I tried to make up for it by painting models painstakingly.

I think I've still a box full of unpainted miniatures somewhere...

Unless you are a very large woman (stature and muscles, not so much fat), a Desert Eagle is WAY too much gun for you. They are freakin' huge, and they kick like a mule.

The kick wasn't too bad due to the gas action.  the weight was horrible though.  Like six and a half pounds at the end of my scrawny arms.  Hitting the broad side of a barn was actually a questionable feat.  I could fire my dad's super redhawk with no problem.  I was more active then, so even that might be a stretch now.

That's what rifles and rests are for. :-)

Seriously.  I grew up in the country as well, and my step dad's familiy had a pretty big ranch up in the hills.  Every few weekends the family and what ever invited friends would come along and we would haul our small arsonal (several sizes of hunting rifles, 6 .22's with banana clips, a couple shot guns, and a few pistols of various sizes) up there with all the ammo we could, and have a good weekend camping and blasting apart the country side.  It actually became my traditional birthday party activity growing up.  Tons of friends always came for that  :awesome_for_real:

I love the way her right boob, swinging away from under her armpit, puts a sense of movement into that picture.
The two oblivious girls on the bottom left and the way the protagonist casually has his left arm resting onto the empty seat next to him, accepting his fate with a cool, usually reserved for the braindead, offset the howling despair from the kid behind the bat quite nicely which gives the entire picture something of a Rubens-esque group portrait feel.

Oh, the article was real,  I was talking more along the lines of the number of people who wrote in in response to the article with statements like "OMG, you cant actually believe that" and "dont be an idiot" and things like that.  The number of people who didnt understand that the person who wrote the article wrote it entirely as a joke was astounding.  Appearently, there was also quite a number of people who bought the idea of "daylight savings time shift as a government conspiracy" hook, line and sinker as well.

I like how the 'lost cat' bit says "Please Call" but has no number.  Kind of breaks the joke.

If you look closely you can see where someone actually took the number out w/ paint, theres a phone-number sized chunk of pure white in there.

Those frogs were actually part of a mass migration which occurred about a week prior to the recent quake in China but the strangeness of it gave me Cthulu vibes.

They did that, because I had broken it so badly. Basically I landed on top of my dirtbike and my hand went into the spokes of the still spinning rear wheel. That particular finger was rotated to where the fingernail was nearly opposite of where it should be, and after setting it without pins it would start to rotate again. Therefore, pins were needed to keep it right side up. It's still all jacked up though.  :oh_i_see:

If your talking about the thing sticking out from the bottom of the plane, I believe its part of the radar used to track the target the laser is suppose to blast.  As I recall, the idea is that the radar first picks up a target.  Then the laser shoots a very wide and weak laser blast in that direction to track the target, then a more narrower laser blast to pinpoint the speed/size of the target, then shoots the very focused high energy blast to take out the missile.  All of that is suppose to only take a few seconds.

Though now I hear people are getting worried because it could hypothetically be used to take out satellites (though its not designed to. It works by detecting heat exhaust from things like missiles.  Though I'm sure you could modify it....).  It hypothetical range, at best, will be about 600 KM to take out a missile.  So I guess if you just angle it up and aim at space....

The uses are only limited by range and your imagination!

From what I understand about the system, it only works during the boost phase of a missile, before the missile is going too fast to track. It works by flash heating the missile during this phase, it doesn't actually destroy it or burn it, it just causes enough instability that the missile shakes itself apart. Satellites are a whole other ballgame; low earth orbit satellites are flying quite fast relative to the surface of the earth; miles per second in all cases, and geostationary ones are 35,000km out. One's moving too fast to hit, the other's too far away.

Exactly.  Its pretty hard to track the satellite and hit it with the way the system is set up, I believe.  Though again, I have seen several places when looking up info on the laser where its been brought up as a potential concern (by those who want to stop the weaponization of space).  Didn't really bother to read how probable it was though.  However, if it could hit it, I believe satellites are VERY delicate, and it wouldn't take much to disable/fry it.  But who knows.

Though your not quite right on the "shakes itself apart" angle.  At least from what I read, it does burn though the side of the missile.  Its just that during the boost phase, its not only going slow enough to track, but its got tons of fuel and a thin skin.  By hitting it with the laser, the side of the missile is thin enough to let the laser weaken it to the point that it blows itself up because it cant contain whats going on inside.  I guess that's sort of similar to what you said, but it IS burning into it ;).  However, because of that, its not really designed to take out other things, like satellites.  Or ground based targets.

THOSE will be taken care of by the Advanced Tactical Laser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_tactical_laser) which is taking a similar COIL system and putting it in a AC-130 gunship for use against precision ground targets.  They have already installed the system onto an AC-130, and announced they had successfully fired the weapon while it was on the ground early this month. They plan to test fire it against ground targets while flying around sometime later this year.   :drill:

Mmm, I wouldn't call it theft but it's not an homage either. Fondant is awful tasting. Most people that I've met hate it. Cake-makers use it because it turns a cake into a bunch of clay essentially. It's easy to sculpt clay.

Personally, I hate all that cake artistic bullshit. If I could pick one show to go away from the food network, it would be Ace of Cakes. I loathe that guy. It's stupid to pay more than $50 for a cake, unless it's your wedding.

It might physically be made up of mostly cake like items, but 4 days exposed to the air and wrapped in the sugar equivalent of flour paste does not delicious and moist make.  Cake is meant to be eaten, ergo that is not a cake.

It's probably real.  I've seen a similar spawning group alongside a jetty when I was younger.  Endless groups of rays swimming towards shore for hours.  It was one of the most beautiful sights I've ever encountered.

Kinda hard to see at the resolution, but it appears to be a trick of the eye. For one, I don't see a lot of folks running for their lives or their boats. That makes me think the storm may be behind that island (from the PoV of the camera) but a fair distance. It could be that the only person freaking out is the camera guy :-)

Yeah, pretty sure from the shot its a perspective thing.  The storm is actually behind the island some ways.  Still doesn't stop it from being an awesome picture though.

I saw the Dubai tower earlier, seems they have some turbine system built into each floor which powers the rotation, or the units I wasn't clear on that point. Apparently the idea is that the residents change the view as they fancy. It seems like an awesome idea, and I hope they do pull it off.

That is pretty much exactly what I was thinking, that picture is the opposite of awesome.

The elephants live in a conservation centre and are mostly former domestic animals that have either been rescued from abusive owners or adopted for other reasons. The program is humane and monitored by veterinarians.

I doubt there was any beating involved. I was an elphant trainer for awhile, and one of our elephants loved to paint. She was more into abstract paintings though. We gave all the elephants a chance to paint, but she was the only one that really enjoyed it.

Strangely enough, just apply. Most people don't bother to because they don't have experience, but Marine World used to have open positions for apprentice dolphin, tiger, whale, and elephant trainers pretty much all the time, and they would hire anyone smart enough to learn.

Honestly, I got lucky.  At Marine World Africa USA you just sent in a resume to the HR department for a summer job, and they would give it to the departments they thought would be interested. I was fully expecting to be serving fries. However, I was an FFA member with some cattle experience, so they passed me off to the elephant staff instead. We had 6 Asians and 5 Africans. If it wasn't for the unlivable wage, I might have stuck with it as a career; I really loved spending my day climbing on top of 4 ton squishy behemoths.

Yup. Piece of cake if you're smart enough to take orders and not jump in their mouth. If you can live on their wages, they probably have an apprentice position open. Also, once you have experience with any type of exotic animal it is pretty easy to move to working with a different one, as far as I can tell.

Porn store is pretty random. I've been a file clerk, land developer, golf caddy, staff accountant, writer, and bartender before I went to get my Masters at 26. I think a lot of different jobs before you settle on something in your later 20s is a good way to go.

Control fire started to burn an area while they can still control it before it becomes part of the giant wildfire spreading through.  Usually they burn ahead of time critical areas where the fire needs to move through to pass on to a place where, if it gets out of control, becomes a larger and bigger fire with the newfound material (be it a larger forest, homes, etc).

Basically using a flare gun to start a fire they can let burn a while, then put out.  Can be helpful at stopping out of control fires from continuing to spread.  Didn't work last fall because the winds were so strong a single ember could start a fire 1-2 miles away without much warning.

Areas already burned do not burn again. I think the theory is that you pre-burn an area in a controlled fashion in front of where you think the fire will be eventually. This creates something of a wall because when the fire does get there it has nothing no fuel to continue.

Another tactic (though I don't think related to this image) is to use an explosive to get rid of the oxygen in the air so quick, the already there suffocates.

The many fires in nowhere California are burning weeks after they started.  Fire fighters are overwheeled and there has been a lot of damage already.  It was so smoky back up near where I grew up that another fire started in mountains, and they didn't even discover it until 6 days after it had started, burning several thousand acres already.

It's primarily a state response though.  It's the California fire fighting infrastructure (we have tons of bombers and helicopters sitting around the state ready to fight fires at any given time) vs. the fires.  With a good amount of manpower help from fire fighters across the nation, I will also add.

New Orleans has the Louisina government in charge of evacuation and disaster plans, along with rebuilding.  Frankly, a ton of it is there fault (even accounting for the horribly inept FEMA aid response after the disaster hit).

Yup.  California has chosen to spend gozillions on fire fighting equipment because while 300 years of history may go under water in New Orleans\Louisiana, if one (or worse, a block) celbrity's place in Malibu goes up in flames while Arnold and company snooze, they have a ton more bad press to fling around and money to sue with than the entire 9th ward.

I mean it took the national news several days to focus on San Diego when half the place was on fire because Malibu started burning first.

Corrupt government, poor populace without the money to fix it, and in general the stupidity that is building houses BELOW sea level are all good reasons I hope they spend the money on relocating people instead of rebuilding.

You're right there's something slightly jarring realising that history has always looked the way it does now, I wonder sometimes if that's just the effect of seeing technology progress in its ability to capture images of the past or if we always had that kind of attitude, that somehow 100 years ago everything was different. Not in any specific way just somehow different from now.

Those color 30s photos are amazing.  The closest I'd seen is technicolor, which doesn't do justice to the real thing.  Amazing.

Those are all fantastic. I absolutely love kodachrome, amazing film. Shame that the scanning and conversion to jpeg has been done so badly, there's a LOT of jpeg artifacts on them :(

I just tried a careful stepwise resampling of that up to 1280x but there's so much compression noise that it either looks like shit or I lose all the detail in trying to clean it up. Real shame since a good scan of the original slide would look awesome.
