That picture does not do justice to how awesome those are. Taken out of context it looks photoshopped until you see all the pics and the video, just...wow.

Sadly, I don't. I did, however, stumble onto this in my search:

Nope, the fuel tanks on SR71s are made of a magnesium alloy and designed to allow room for the metal to expand at hypersonic speeds. This means that they aren't watertight until the 'plane is in flight and air friction has heated the fuselage enough. They used a special jet fuel that isn't particularly flammable for precisely that reason. They'd also generally take off with a low fuel load then fuel up in flight from a tanker before going off on their mission.

SR-71s operate right at the limits of atmosphere. All Blackbird pilots have their astronaut wings and wear what is basically a space suit.

Information which I was aware of. I put it to you, dear sir, that it's still creepy as all hell. Especially when you cut them and red dust pours out.

Those things didn't carry weapons. Plus when they were operational we were spying on other white folks mostly (i.e. the Russians).

The original design was supposed to. Regardless, the SR-71 is proof that even with all of our fancy robotics and computers, we still haven't designed a plane that gets even close to it. And they designed it in the fifties.

Not exactly. It had a sister that was also based on the prior A-12 model that only went to the prototype stage (YF-12) with 3 built. They had to modify it to accommodate weapons and radar so it isn't the same design. The SR-71 was purely recon from day one.

If you go into the Air and Space museum out at Dulles airport, the Blackbird is front and center. :) As an AF vet, I may or may not have pics of a SR-71 I wasn't supposed to get.
Also, I demand the next Civ game has the Blackbird as one of America's unique units. This is not a negotiation!

They were also designed with non-hardened metals so they would perform better as their metals aged. And it was still pretty flammable... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMyC2urCl_4 Course, having a drone smack into you at mach 3 didn't help much either.

It was plenty flammable, just had a high flash point. They had to inject a special fuel that basically ignites at contact with air in order to get it going (in addition to ramping up the turbines using big block Chevy engines in a starter cart). The whole thing is just nuts which is why it is my favorite plane ever made. The only 71C ever built is just up the road from me at the Hill Museum (its known as "The Bastard'). It was cobbled together from a crashed airframe and a test plane and was supposedly never quite "straight." Crazy they flew something not quite right at supersonic speeds.

Hill AFB is awesome. I loved being able to touch the barrel of a warthog and realizing just how big the shells that gatling gun fires are. (I was there at the same time as a blind person, so it might have made a bigger impression on me.) And yea - the leading edge of that plane's wings just don't look right at all.
