He's using some false perspective to make it look higher and closer to the edge than it really is. Cool photo though.

Their ability to turn in such a small space blows my mind. If I had a spare $400M I'd be tempted to throw it at one of these.

Well they're using a fixed win rather than a sail, so they're almost there.

On the Oracle boat, I can see that the right side middle fin is raised up through the hull so it's not in use.  The fin is shaped like an L (backwards) so the vertical part steers and the bottom part hydrofoils the boat up into the air.  They pull back on the top of it and it'll angle the foil to lift more (I can see the left L fin doesn't go straight down it's angled backwards a bit).  It's amazing that they're balancing the weight of that whole boat + wind forces from the sail on the left L fin, pretty much.

I heard a lot of bitching about those boats from people who, you know, sail boats. Apparently one of the weird rules for the Cup is the winner of the Cup gets to set the rules for the next cup, and Ellison basically wanted to make it "more exciting" or some shit (like literally NASCARing it) and so went with these insane boats.

Insanely expensive, and insanely dangerous.

And apparently the more exciting/more people watching thing sorta blew up. If it hadn't been for the whole come from behind thing, they'd have had the worst crowd for years.

I guess, in general, people who watched like watching a sport they could comprehend --- you know, with boats shaped like boats they're vaguely familiar with and sail plans that are vaguely similar to the stuff they sail. Kinda within reach, you know?  He basically replaced, say, a marathon with some weird Fomula-1 racing thing where they road light-cycles. :)

The AC72 was of course specifically designed for this year's America's Cup but multi-hulled boats and wing sails have been raced in the America's Cups for quite some time now. Dennis Connor used one to win the 1988 America's Cup.

It still did well:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/26/sports/nbc-gets-far-more-than-it-expected-from-cup.html?_r=0

I like the change personally.  I never followed it at all before this, but really enjoyed watching those amazing boats race.  I know many other people who feel similarly.  May have turned off the older crowd, but it certainly introduced a lot of new people to the event and expanded the fan base.  The next one should be interesting.

The problem is that it is going to price everyone so far out of the competition that there will be 2 or 3 teams total in the world. Not much of a competition at that point.
