I am always amused by pictures like that of the great pyramids. Your mind pictures them in the lonely desert somewhere but the city has really creeped up very close to them.

I thought I'd read somewhere that the Egyptian government/tourist board tries to suppress pictures like that because they want to promote the idea that the pyramids *are* still in the middle of empty desert. Could be bollocks.

Honestly given how open desert looking they try to keep the area just surrounding the pyramids I would not be shocked if that is true.  But the juxtaposition is neat too something that ancient surrounded by their bustling ancestors. I think the people who build the pyramids would be happy to see their descendents still thriving.

Maybe not quite awesome but at least neat: The invisible church of Borloon.

First at sunset with HDR cranked up to 13, second on an overcast day without all the bloody image manipulation.

Less known and hard to image when seeing these flames is that "only" 35 out of 97 persons on board died.

It was also only the 5th deadliest airship crash. Worse:

USS Akron (Navy Airship) - Sunk in the atlantic, 73 dead
Dixmude - (French Naval Airship) - 50 dead
R101 - (British passenger airship) - 48 dead on it's first voyage including it's designer
R38 - British Airship built for the US Navy - 44 dead during trial flight

I find it really odd  that they appear to have legs/feet at that stage of development.

There are a couple of species of birds that have claws on their wing joints when they are hatched. Things like that happen.

Vestigial organs are pretty common. If you look at whale skeletons you can see some really atrophied evidence that they were formerly quadrupeds.

File under stuff I never thought of but makes obvious sense now: Whales evolved from land animals.

As a boy from Darwin that would be difficult.

Just one of those things you never really thought about, maybe I thought they were an offshoot from fish that went mammalian..which is fairly dumb now that I think about.

Just cool I guess..:P I'm easily amused.

Humans have both vestigial tails and gills at early stages of development. I also didn't realise that whales had evolved from land animals though!

I'm surprised you all didn't know whales came from land animals since I was taught that back in 5th grade science. I've had a loony theory for years that whales beaching is attached to that particular evolutionary quirk.

Looking up Stingray anatomy online those "legs" are actually the rear fin muscles in other fish which evolved into legs in our precursors and the coelacanth.

Silly person... That isn't taught in science anymore. Whales had to get on the Ark so God granted them legs until after the flood. Don't you know anything!?!

I'd put that in green if it were not already so over-the-top obvious.

5th grade science, that was a long time ago. I'm a product of the Australian public school systems..Dead explorers and gold miners are all I remember. (again the irony being I grew up in Darwin..:))

Aquatic mammals is one of those cool moments when evolution as a theory starts to really make sense. Why do these fish breathe water and these 'fish' need to breathe air? And why are they not like Lungfish that also breather air? Suddenly makes a lot more sense when you realise that those animals were actually land dwellers that went back to the sea.

I now understand why Hippos are so mean. They're the ugly sister of the family, feeling they were denied their rightful place at the center of attention and wonder.

If you want to see the process a little less far along, look at seals and sea lions, which are part of the carnivora clade with dogs and cats.  They are more closely related to dogs than cats are.

Marine reptiles like Ichthyosaurus evolved from land dwellers, too, and really drive home what parallel evolution is all about.

Well that's a silly question. EVERYTHING edible is tasty when fried. Even some inedible stuff is.

Well that's really cool. I didn't know that about seals. Considering how playful/ friendly they can be with divers I wonder how far back the line that trait goes.

I know many of you are MST3K fans.  I thought I'd share the poster my friend made for them. You may recognize it if you're a hardcore fan.

The story is he did one in a similar style for his own use years ago, with only half the original episodes referenced. He had Joel sign it at a con and they commissioned him to create this for the new series launch. There's a reference to each episode on this version, including the new ones.

Fan made content is almost always better (so long as someone with professional-level skill is doing it.)  They have a vision and are able to enact it, vs. putting it through whatever corporate bullshit sifter is in place at an organization and filtering it through a bunch of B & C-level marketing execs whose most creative project was the shit they took last week.  Which is why all the posters look like derivative knock-offs of each other for any given timeframe.

Not that I've got an opinion on the matter.  awesome, for real

Sometimes the problem with posters or advertising for a series or franchise is that the first one or two set the look or theme and the rest have to follow that to encourage branding and recognition.  So you end up with the corporate committee look that's bland and boring.

I like that fan made poster there.  Although, I think I'd crop a bit more off the top.  Have the lightsabers bleed off the page instead of ending before the edge.  But that's just me.
