Having Mr. Wizard flashbacks.

It's an optical illusion.  The both ends of the slinky are contracting towards the center, the center is falling as per normal.  It appears to us that the bottom remains still while the top falls twice as fast as normal.

What do you mean "it appears that"? Unless there is some really weird perspective stuff going on, the bottom pretty much IS remaining still.  So the question becomes, is it a coincidence that the force of the spring pulling up on the bottom is exactly equal to the force of gravity pulling down, or is there something else going on?  Would the bottom behave the same if the spring was twice (or half) as strong?

Also, what would happen if the slinky was long enough (say 10 or 20 miles or so) for there to be a noticeable difference between the force of gravity acting on the bottom vs the top.  Would the bottom still stay suspended until the top contracted down to it?

Yes, I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?

It's mostly coincidence, but I say "appears" because there is obviously going to be some change of elevation of the bottom of the slinky, but it's marginal from our vantage point and the quality of the video.

Not just the bottom of the slinky that's at rest; just as he lets go, the middle of the slinky is at rest too.  When he's holding it, for each coil in the slinky, gravity is balanced by the elastic force from the coil above pulling up.  When the top is released, the motion propagates like a wave, with slow speed rather than infinite speed.  In effect, none of the lower coils realize the slinky has been released until the motion reaches them and the elastic force disappears.

Wave propagation.

The "center mass is falling" explanation is better than the wave propagation method i think.

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/09/modeling-a-falling-slinky/

The "middle" of the slinky is only at rest because the center of mass of the slinky is not the middle after the instant it has been dropped, the center of mass is falling.

It's center-of-mass.

The spring is stretched to the extent that its force is equal to gravity.  The center of mass moves, so it contracts slightly in the lower half, but not enough to really notice easily.  Because gravity was matching the stretch of the spring, the very lowest point remains stationary until the spring is fully collapsed.  The top of the spring is accelerating at twice the rate of gravity.  The center of mass falls at G.

Simplify it to three points:  Top, T.  Bottom, B.  And Center, C.

T = 9.8 m/s^2 + 9.8 m/s^2
B = 9.8 m/s^2 - 9.8 m/s^2

C = (T + B) / 2 = 9.8 m/s^2, which is the rate the mass as a whole is falling at.  You cannot make the entire mass fall any slower or faster without outside force.

Hmm... the gif is too fast. You miss the lightning in the clouds unless you're looking for it. But the YouTube vid is a bit jerky... needs something that goes a bit faster than the YouTube vid (but not much) but with more frames, so it's smoother. Then it'd be really, really awesome.

It's also missing William Goldman and Rob Reiner but I guess the writer and director aren't really that important.

Who is the guy with the sword in the background?  I've watched this movie literally hundreds of times and I have no idea who that is.  Is it Prince Humperdinck?

The photographer has it all mixed up. The 'guy with the sword' should be the Count seeing as it is the sword Inigo's father made.  grr! /nerdpick
