This is the Kopp-Etchells effect. The helicopter blades interact with the dust in the air.

Nah, that's a CH-47, they generally catch on fire when you start them up.   ACK!

Wow. Flashback to my youth when I lived in San Bernardino, CA and we had what was called the Panorama Fire. The mountains looked like they had rivers of fire trailing down them. Sky (not the board member) looked a lot like that picture. Eerie stuff.

The big picture blog for the Boston Globe has a bunch of pictures up for the fires as well, some good stuff:

There should have been a scene in Terminator 2 where a car falls on Robert Patrick.

Whale shark?
Yeah, that's a whale shark. About as dangerous as an inflatable shark. Swims along very inefficiently at 5mph, filtering the water of plankton and other tiny things.

I might be the only person that thinks this is awesome, but the following was taken a couple days ago, about 50 miles offshore, Gulf of Mexico.  Pictures taken from an oil rig:
No, it's not just you.  That is definately awesome.

And doesn't mean anything because the latter picture is just fan art.

So you're thinking the ingame shot only looks like the latter because we now have the latter for reference? I could see that, since I'd never have looked at the first image that way. But now that it's there, I can't not see it that way.

I noticed it when I played the game, it always looked like a humanoid figure hanging upside down. I thought of it more like batman, though. Watching.. waiting.

(Throw me in the "noticed that GLaDOS looked like someone hanging upside down when I first played Portal" camp too.)

The analysis that spawned that picture is here.  It's a touch crazy, but definitely a good read.

I never saw that in the GLADos machine, but now that I have, it just makes Portal that much more of a startling and awesome game.

What is the name of this "style of art"? Not the use of coffee per se, but the use of (generally) other smaller pictures with the right shades that then create a larger picture.

You were right, it bugged me too but tracked it down as 'Pointillism'.

Awesome thanks... it bugged me so much I forgot about it until I revisited this thread, then it bugged me again but VIOLA! you saved me a good 10 minutes of searching  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?
