as the child of a math professor and a match teacher I was biologically compelled to post.

Are you saying that mathematical ability is genetically inherited? Cos them thar's fightin words.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Probability is often counter-intuitive. Really a lot of math is counter-intuitive, so it's often dangerous to rely on neat solutions or "common sense."

Here's a similar problem. Say you have three hotels in a row of different levels of quality. You stop by the first one and it's ok but you decide to move on and check out the second one. The second one is worse than the first. Should you continue on to the third hotel? (You can't go back - one way street!) It seems like the common sense answer is it doesn't matter, the third one could be worse or better, who the hell knows? But imagine the hotels are lettered A B C where A is the best and C is the worst. The possible situations you are in (second hotel worse than the first):

ABC
BCA
ACB

You could be in any of the three above scenarios. In 2 of them going to third hotel is a win. That really does not make intuitive sense but them's the breaks.

My intuitive response was "go back!" then you said it was a one way street and it was "go forward!", so it depends on your intuition...

My intuitive response is to go on rather than stay at the worst hotel I've seen so far.

....Is that the Phnom Penh Post?

I mean, I guess the story would fit for the area, I just wasn't expecting English.

It's an English language newspaper (for the English-speaking community, mostly expats)

Yes, BUT, you stated your condition after you declared the commons sense solution wrong. In 'real life' the third hotel could be even worse. As in:

|   |   |  OK Hotel
|       |
|   |   |
|       | Bad Hotel
|   |   |
|       |
|   |   | Really Bad Hotel

Basically you are stuck with two known solutions and and one unknown.

The third hotel is worse than the second hotel only 1/3rd of the time. 1/3rd of the time it's better than the second hotel but worst than the first, and 1/3 of the time it's the best.

The actual reason it doesn't work in 'real life' is because hotels can be the same quality (or also better or worse than each other by different amounts. Also, money!)

There should be a rule where you can post in the awesome picture thread or funny thread if you don't have a picture.

1 day ban if you do.

We had someone do the "no breakdancing" one on a wet floor sign at my last job.  We got a stern lecture from the safety officer of our company about how it wasn't a laughing matter and to not deface the signs.

It's management's fault. They're constantly on our asses.

I got trained as one. My training was ideal for an industrial environment, or at least a working lab with lots of dangerous tools and shit. I work in an office. So I got stuck, for four years, doing weekly walkarounds and pestering people about daisy-chained cords and making sure cables were taped down, and maybe to move their desk a bit to minimize the concussion whenever they jumped up and smashed their head on the shelf overhang nailed to the all there.

Because if I didn't, my manager got all over my ass about safety metrics.

And the number one workplace injury -- and this INCLUDES the labs and industrial environments I was trained for but never had to go do a walkthrough for? Slips, trips and falls.

Not even preventable ones. People tripping over their own fat feet. Some of it was face plants from texting and not noticing a curb, or water spills, but 90% of them were just people suddenly forgetting how to walk or use stairs and falling.

But they still end up being lost time accidents which mean I had to go around and remind people "hey, guys, try not to forget how to walk. Turns out falling down can seriously injure you. I realize you think you're walking experts, but frankly it seems a little tough for a lot of people around here. Perhaps we'll have a class on it after we do back safety."

SO glad to not have to do that shit anymore.
