It's not an alien, it's Cthulhu-spawn. The shot was clearly taken at Ry'leh.

So, did the polar bear /thread this? Seems like it spurred the most comments.
And ya... the bird and fish picture doesn't need a caption. Would ruin it.

"Prekestolen", located in Stavanger, Norway I'm usually not too bothered by heights but this terrifies me. I'm not sure if it's the obscured ground or the giant ominous crack running across the fjord.

So it's probably not a good thing to tell you it's a 1982-foot fall off the far end there?

Ah, thats awesome. If I ever get back to Norway, I'm making my friends take me there. Oddly, I have not a small fear of heights myself, but I keep making myself hike to places like that. Someday I'm going to be brave and make the damn hike to the top of half dome: Thats a 4,737 foot fall We'll see if I'm actually brave enough to take shots like this:

Half Dome, in Yosemite, California. The more famous pictures are taken from another angle. They have a steel cable running up the side so that any ol' fool can hike up there, and from all accounts, a lot of totally unprepared fools do. Every once in a while, someone slips or decides to wander away from the cable and slides right over the edge. Some pictures of the traffic jam on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_dome

I love to hike and I love mountains, but I hate heights. Such a tortured life I lead! That cable thing looks pretty sweet.

I was sick the weekend the band went up to Yosemite, so I missed half-dome :(
I'm mildly bothered by large verts when accompanied by medium plus winds, which is usual for those kind of features. I beat the stasis of that fear by freeclimbing, there is no time to freeze up and be afraid, you move or die.
It had been a while and when I hit a few dropoffs in VT a couple years ago, I felt the full force of it, because I'm walking up to it all suave, like I was in my climbing prime and it had been ten years since I stood at the edge of a 1000ft+ cliff and dangled my feet over. Got the heart pounding, but I quickly got my balance back and had a great time. Fiancee stays the hell back, if it's a climb to get there, she brings a book.

And yeah, while many people do it, I don't know if I could handle doing the cables. Hell, several people a year slip and die trying to do them: I guess it could be worst though. Could try to actually climb up the damn face like some of the really insane people:

My parents are obsessed with Yosemite. I went there so many times when I was a kid. After you get over the view and go, 'Awww, a deer' a bunch of times it's boring as fuck. It's overrun with Ansel Adams camera-clicking, wannabe tourists. There's a huge hotel in the valley that's pretty famous. The Ahwahnee. You can stay there if you have a zillion dollars. There's an Ansel Adams gallery where you can overpay for prints by, oh, a couple hundred dollars. There's a bunch of ridiculous little places to shop for 'native' handiwork. To me, Yosemite has kind of become a monument to Whitey trampling native people's culture, and I never wish to go there again. Fakedit: No he means this angle:

Eh, I think thats only if you hang out strictly at Yosemite Valley, and don't do much hiking. Yosemite is huge, and there is much more beyond just Yosemite Valley. The hiking and climbing is where you get to see the real beauty, and most of the weekend warriors aren't prepared to do a 15 mile hike in high altitude. Back country backpacking and camping is great, and Yosemite is still probably the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

If you enjoy Yosemite, I encourage you to spend a week in the Tetons or Banff. I think the rugged beauty of those two areas is unmatched. Note: I also don't consider Yosemite "high altitude". Most of the campgrounds are between 4000 and 8600 feet. Is the peak over 14k? I don't recall it being very high, but I haven't been there in years.

Yeah, its been on my places to visit list for a long time. Hopefully my plan of winning the lotto will work out any day now, and I'll be able to travel instead of work.

I've been seriously considering leaving my job to work as a guide/avalanche rescue. That way I can enjoy both at the same time. I did have an offer to ski patrol full time back in the Rockies, but the pay is terrible and I really don't want to work construction all summer.
