I was once told that the frequency of basements was related to the depth required for the foundation to be below the frost line (i.e. if it's in a cold climate, the foundation would need to be deeper. If you have a deep foundation, it's easy to just have a basement.)
I'm not sure if it's true or just an urban myth, but I've see far fewer basements as the climate gets warmer.
That makes a lot of sense. Surely we must have a contractor/builder around here to confirm or reject this myth...

I love my TV an' hug my TV an' call it 'George'.

I believe that is correct. But you need to be somewhere with codes for it to matter, though. My house was outside city limits in 1930, so I shudder to think how thin the slab is. Though it's held together since 1930 and hasn't heaved against the 1950ish addition (with basement), so no complaints, I guess.

I worked for a real estate developer, and the frost line does dictate the depth of the foundation, but most places in the US aren't cold enough to put it completely under ground. The basement is made up by the walls of that foundation. Building in Texas, as mentioned before, does have the problem of different types of soil structure and bedrock, so basements aren't common. The codes play a huge part in each city as well.
Also, building around areas with high water tables don't have basements either, or in Cali because of the earthquakes. People in the South had them as an option because they are cooler than the rest of the house, and people liked to store things down there in the "cellar."

Most of the houses built in the last 50 years in Mississippi don't have basements. I think I've been in maybe 2 down here my entire life that do. With as much rain as we get, I'd imagine it'd be a fucking nightmare to try to waterproof.

My house here in CT has a basement. Its where my bedroom is. While in the winter this means heating is a bit of a bitch, it makes up for it in the summer as it stays cooler longer and I can get away with just a fan in the hottest parts of the season. Plus only one window which is nice for my sometimes insomnia having daytime sleeping self. Though i need a better blind in there. That or I will eventually just paint the effing window. (The upstairs bedrooms have been converted into tabletop gaming storage, and a room to play tabletop games in. And still store more gaming shit. )

Ah, my room is in the basement as well, but it's only half underground. It's about 10 degrees cooler in here than it is upstairs during the summer.

I grew up in Southern Illinois with a walkout basement house and have seen some houses with basements where I live now in Northern Illinois. Our house can't have a basement because there is a creek at the back edge of the property (flood plain) but we do have a completed crawlspace, meaning it's fully concreted in instead of gravel bottomed (yay for storage!). I miss having a basement, especially if it's a walk out one.
AFAIK, the depth of a foundation can be determined by needing to get below the frost line and what kind of land the house is built on. Parents recently built a new home in Southern IL and they needed to have a floating foundation because the lot was a former landfill (over 30 yrs old) from when nearby state highway was built/upgraded. That added a pretty significant cost to the building expenses too.

Oh the joys of illegal basements in La Jolla. Must you constantly remind me that you live in La Jolla? Bastard

Maybe in southern Cal or on the coast but the central valley has tons of them. Pretty much all of the older homes (pier and beam) have a basement. Of course the soil is pretty sandy making it easy to dig w/o much expansion/contraction/binding going on.

I grew up in the Sacramento valley and nobody had any (well, maybe a few rare very old houses, but thats about it).

Pictures of unbuilt Gundam model kits in my basement are the polar opposite of awesome. (And a Robotech Defenders version of the Orguss with more parts and requiring more glue and paint than I currently wish to tackle.)

Tons of new development there in the last 20 years but prior to that it was mostly older homes (2 of the houses I grew up in were built prior to 1940) most of which had basements. One of the houses I grew up in even had this mammoth heater in the basement, looked like an upside down octopus with a fire in it's belly! As a result the basement was comfortable year round, plus it was huge.
