Give Tale's link to the Bangkok floods, I dare say it was poorly timed.

There doesn't appear to be space for a car battery anywhere. There are no control planes, how the heck does she surface? In any case, you guys know that underwater she's actually more buoyant than a skinny girl, right?
The control vanes are inside it, where the propelled water comes out. But I believe it only goes left or right, not up or down. The buoy controls depth, which is obviously pre-set by the length of the tether to the buoy. They don't surface the scooters or whatever they are called, they use a hook-and-lift from the boat to lift it out of the water and into the boat. Awesome free diving (no tank) pic:

Yeah, but the depths some skilled freedivers can get down to are just insane.
It is an awesome pic though, although I would have preferred to not see the other divers higher up in the image. Just the one freediver and the light.

The other divers give you a better sense of depth.

I'm a diver, and I've tried lots of different kinds of fins. Never a monofin, though! I wonder why many skin divers prefer them. Anyone know?

I am not a diver, nor do I know much about anything water related... But I would venture a guess as a single fin would take less energy to move than double paddling which would make your heart pump less and the need for a breath might lessen.

Significantly less thrashing, more efficient movement of water.

Awesome free diving (no tank) pic:
Why you're posting pictures of a freediver who's not Tanya Streeter I'll never know. She still holds the women's No Limits Freediving world record of 160m after nearly 10 years. When she set it, it was the men's record.

160 meters!? Without SCUBA? How the hell do you get back up without the bends before, oh, dying from lack of oxygen Crazy.

Bends come from the compressed gasses in the blood bubbling up faster than your body can expel them through breathing. In free diving you take one breath and then head down. So no additional compressed gasses.

You can get the bends as a free diver, it's just a lot less common for the reasons Sand posted.

Clearly I know very little about it. Interesting.
Mind you, my head feels like it will explode ten feet down in a pool, so the whole concept is foreign to me.

Close, but not quite right. It's to do with nitrogen being absorbed into the body tissues. The further down you go, the more nitrogen gets absorbed into your body owing the greater pressure its under (1 atmosphere for every ten metres). When a diver ascends, the nitrogen leaves the body. Ascend too fast and the nitrogen expands into bubbles which can block blood flow and, if serious, cause embolism in the brain, nervous system or cause respiratory or heart problems. Hence the need for ascending slowly and, depending on the dive profile, take decompression stops if necessary. The difference to what you said is that it has very little to do with breathing and not just compressed gases in general. Diving with a Nitrox mix - ie, more than 21% oxygen in the mix - means using different decompression tables and you can stay down longer at comparable depths. Some Trimix cylinders don't have Nitrogen at all. Freedivers can get the bends but usually after doing a lot of dives in a short space of time and not having enough of a surface interval for the nitrogen to leave the body totally. So multiple dives lead to a build up of nitrogen in tissue. Anyways - in keeping with the thread, here's a picture of a wreck that I took which I always thought was awesome (and was on a dive where I nearly ran into deco difficulties): (Wheelhouse of the SS Thistlegorm in the Red Sea)

More pics - because I are being quite drunk: Pissing around on the same wreck, trying to do a Titanic pose on the bow at 35m: Answering the age old question of what do divers do when they need a pee underneath the sea: Can't claim to have taken this one but I do own up to the limp wrist action.

I may actually have to watch this bollywood movie Have you seen Enthiran? Because if not, holy fucking shit. American films haven't been this fun since I was a kid. If then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yBnl_krN_U&hd=1When those guys came up with the robot combat sequences, there was absolutely no one there saying, "Nah, we can't do that - it's too over the top."

Endhiran is like 3 hours long. And I've seen it in its entirety. It becomes pretty irritating tho, because these Indians seem to mix a fuckload of English words into their language, all the English half-sentences sent my brain tripping.
