Does that end with the snake exploding ?  I'm quite sure I've seen an 'after' picture of that and the snake is in half...

Oh, and that's fucking gross.  Why'd it have to be snakes ?

I would have said a croc is an easy meal for a python as its long and rather thin. I've seen pics of them eating cows and tears appearing in their skin with the stretching they have to do to get that down.

Pretty sure that is a different pic, but same situation.   Maybe an anaconda?

A mall in Illinois has a big ass anaconda behind what appears to be a very thin glass wall.  That thing is creepy as all hell, far more terrifying than its much bigger python neighbor.  Like peering into the eyes of Satan.  It looks like it is sizing up its chances of being able to smash through the glass and eat the shit out of you.

Yes it's an anaconda and that was an old picture Ironwood was thinking of.  This is a bit if an epidemic in the Everglades since several hundred escaped or were released way back around Hurricane Andrew. Their population has exploded since there are no predators for them and conditions are perfect. It's a big problem as it's putting more pressure on the endangered gators and crocs

The problem got so bad that last year Florida completely unsurprisingly took a cue from a Simpsons episode and had ourselves a "Great Florida Python Hunt" where amateurs went into the Everglades to hunt pythons for cash and prices.

Not to derail a pic thread further and risk the wrath of Samwise, but .... Seriously ?  Hunting those big fuckers ?  I know it's Florida but that's insane.

The invasive snake population in the Everglades isn't anacondas, it's Burmese pythons and African rock pythons. The piece Slate ran a while ago is basically not true. Burmese pythons are bad enough as an invasive: they're generally very foul-tempered, they breed quickly, and they get replenished not just by reproduction but by releases of pet Burmese and rock pythons who've grown large and dangerous. (Though the US has now banned Burmese as pets, thankfully.) (The snake that ate those kids in Canada was a rock python.)  Anacondas in the US are almost entirely kept by zoos and maybe a few of the kind of crazy private collectors who also keep poisonous snakes and all that sort of thing.

This is about an average size Burmese they have been finding while trying to eliminate the threat. It's from 2009 and the population has gotten larger (in count) since then.

Why can't people just get a cat?

Also, I'd like to once again thank the gods of winter and trigger-happy settlers for killing off pretty much anything that is remotely threatening around here.

Nope, southern Arizona.  We've been in a special bubble all season.  It never even froze here, which is rather rare.

Hey look, a picture:

SF has a bit of a feral cat problem too.  Theory is the coyotes that have started moving in from across the Golden Gate might help curb their numbers some.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Then you'll have a coyote problem, and have to keep your cats in doors.  Had a pack howling up a storm last night.

Also killed a baby rattlesnake on Saturday.  (Well, if foot-long is a baby.)

 DRILLING AND MANLINESS

Coyotes "encouraging" people to keep their cats indoors is a feature.  I'm a cat person, but a food chain with an artificially sustained high population of apex predators isn't terribly fair to the things underneath them.  If you let your cats out to eat birds, it's only fair if one of them gets eaten by a coyote every now and then.

We've got wild turkeys all over here in the city. I've seen several people hit them with their cars. I've seen a few coyotes as well and I'm sure pressure+free wild turkeys has made them move closer to the city. There was also some reports of a mountain lion spotted near downtown St Paul last year. One of them supposedly made a meal out of a feral cat.  awesome, for real

There's no shortage of birds around here, but then I live next to a wildlife refuge and have about a dozen neighbors in my village.

It's just a danger of living in the middle of nowhere.  But Dancer is old and not much of a threat.  She takes no interest in hunting, and if she goes more than ten feet from the bottom steps it's surprising.  (This isn't a "not my sweetie" so much as having quietly observed her.  Other cats I've had were not this docile.  Apparently her mother was a great hunter, so maybe it spoiled her.)

There's a local commercial in Georgia asking owners to keep their cats indoors since they are killing two billion birds a year.
