Trying to figure out how that works.  The wire forms a circuit between the two terminals of the battery, presumably with roughly equal current going along each loop.  Each loop is going to produce a magnetic field (pointing in different directions).  The only way that produces turning is if the field strengths vary over time, though.

Maybe only one side of the thing on the bottom is conductive, so as one loop starts producing a field, that pulls it out of position and pulls the next loop in, then the circuit is completed on the other side, which pulls it out of position in turn, etc?

The thing on the bottom is a neodymium magnet, so now you've got a current in a field and that current is following an angled path through the field so you get acceleration out of plane (b cross e) and therefore -> Spin.

Aside from the magnet bit I'm bullshitting the rest, should at least be in the neighborhood.

The part you need to make an electric motor work is for the current to vary.  If the magnetic fields are all static, they'll quickly find an equilibrium point where the forces are equal and nothing will move.

Otherwise you could get the same effect by just hanging two other permanent magnets in the same locations with the same magic angles and you would have invented perpetual motion.   awesome, for real

Well shut my mouth. The Lorentz force is the thing that was missing from my lower div physics courses.  Now I know a new thing.

Is cool, but that battery is being shorted by a wire from + to - and will probably heat up and drain pretty fast.

This photograph was taken while we were approaching a storm near Julesburg, Colorado, on May 28, 2013. The storm was tornado warned for more than one hour, but it stayed an LP [low precipitation] storm through all its cycles and never produced a tornado, just occasional brief funnels, large hail, and some rain.
