It's gone fully Free To Play now so it's practically a whole new game!

Steal useful stuff from the old and broken thread and repost it in here and let the old thread die a well deserved and long overdue death.

I never even noticed it was broken. I just go to the last page of whatever thread I'm looking at.

Anyway, Star Trek. They released a new screenshot from the forthcoming Dominion arc. It's a dude in a spacesuit, walking on the exterior of DS9.

Fuck yeah.  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

Never worked for me, so I didn't follow the thread with the usual apathetic curiosity I follow most MMOs I've no interest in playing. Glad to know that can resume.

I gave this a go the other day (SWTOR servers were down), having a friend who's played it forever and loves it.

Sorry to say it didn't pass my 1-hour fun test. I couldn't get past the deeply ugly engine, the painfully-slow-walking-in-treacle character movement and the clunky UI. There may well be a great game in there somewhere but then SWTOR came back online.

I really like it, but TOR blows it out of the water for me.

TOR is a better lvling experience.  STO is a better endgame experience.

I always felt STO was pretty fun, and the ground combat revamp is pretty swank. It also sees actual content updates, which puts it a step above Champions, which has seen precisely dick in the past two years. That said, it's fun that doesn't last too long since you'll be out of things to do in three weeks since leveling is lightning fast now, and the end-game is hardly compelling enough that you'd want to go back to it over and over.

Like I said in one of the SWTOR threads, endgame is bullshit in any game.

The draw to STO was actually the story lines too. All the shit that lead up to the JJ Abrams movie and the stuff that happened after in the prime universe were fucking awesome. The endgame of grinding through Borg and Undine shit over and over was the exact opposite of fucking awesome.

I played this for a few hours yesterday.  Initial reactions:

1) My god is the interface intimidating

2) My god the whole ground game is just... ugly.  It's lacking the stylized-approach of WOW and instead looks like Dungeon Siege II.  The ships, on the other hand, are fantastic.  I resent that missions even have a ground component because it means less time in my ship.

3) The ships and descriptions gave me a little geek-gasm when browsing them on the Starbase

4) The ground game was ok mechanically but the interface works poorly if you're supposed to direct your away-team for any sort of tactics.

5) TOR has ruined normal MMOs for me.  I was sick of reading things after a half hour.

6) I don't know if it throws too much at a player too quickly or it just does a horrible job of explaining things, but I was lost for a good while.  Sure, I stumbled through but I never felt I got the hang of the basics and I was just getting lucky in my victories.  That doesn't inspire me to go back.

7) As far as free games go, I'd rather play World of Tanks. Simpler interface and a simpler game but over-all more depth in terms of mechanics and knowledge you gain as you get more experienced as a player.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

I've bitched about endgame in exactly two threads. And if you can honestly give me an example of why grinding merits for unlockable gear in STO is such a great thing, I'll shut up. Until then, kindly piss off.

I've never even played this before, it's just tiresome to hear people bash entire gameplay styles that they personally don't like.

You say you haven't played the endgame of this or even the game at all, yet you tell me to stop bashing it when I have played to the endgame and found it wanting.

"Endgame" is not a gameplay style, either, but hey.

To keep this on topic, yes, even with the revamping of ground combat, it's still clunky. I like it, but it's definitely very rough around the edges and feels jarringly out of place considering how good the space combat is. The Klingon play has definitely gotten better, but it's still damned shallow when compared to Fed play. There are glaring spots in it where you have to grind up to the next level to get a structured mission set.

It's a nice gesture!  Probably won't use it ever given that it's likely to have the same crap turn rate as every other big ship, but I'll happily accept it and keep it in my stable to fly around when the mood hits.

Notes for today's patch, including a vast sea of Duty Officer tweaks.

For those interested in such things: STO lead designer Al 'Gecko' Rivera on STO's past and future:

Massively.com recaps a podcast

Summary:

 - Foundry tools being improved in STO, but no date set at this point. Each Cryptic game team works on their title separately, so changes to Neverwinter's Foundry tools aren't automatically transferable to STO / ChampO.

 - Grab bags earned Cryptic a lot of money, so they will be staying. Part of the reason they came about was CBS not letting Cryptic release the Jem'Hadar ships unless they were ultra rare due to lore concerns.

 - New factions won't be added until the Klingons have a lot more to do.

 - Atari and Cryptic didn't get on, with Atari having a box release mindset and not wanting to keep investing in Cryptic once the titles had been released. When Atari divested itself of Cryptic, Cryptic went dark and their were come job cuts. Now owned by Perfect World Entertainment, Cryptic is looking to hire more people.

It's from the lead designer, so take that was you will.

Todays patch was pretty hefty, 902 mgs uncompressed.

FTP seems to have been an initial success, the servers are pretty crowded.

I really agree though that the "endgame" needs to have more than 6 scenarios (3 ground 3 space) to be viable. But its pretty fun, but it does depend on having team members that have a clue. I know I'm going to start organizing fleet ops in my own fleet to some of the non Borg fleet content. I really don't know about the decision to massively speed up the leveling process, especially considering that hardly leaves time for non subs to gather Dilithium to get their leveled ships. It also means they hit the wall of the endgame faster, but in my new character play through there still was a couple of episodes to go when he hit vice admiral.

I didn't like ground at first either, but it does break up the space sequences pretty well and increases the longevity of it I think. I quite enjoy it now.

Accidentally got a random screenshot a couple of weeks back that was actually pretty decent.

Is there anywhere left to get the digital deluxe goodies at a decent price?  I missed that one $3 Steam sale, and had just been waiting for another deal like that.  Mainly I want the Trill option and the passive defense laser, and if I'm going to give this a shot I'd rather have the racial option at character creation.

The cheapest I've found so far is a 10 pound offer, from a UK company I don't know.  Most places aren't offering it at all now.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Played the new f2p version for a short time.

IMO the did improve the game in some ways, late but at last the tried.
Still not liking sto, however some of the work the have done is a major step in the right direction.

Good
You can now access fleet actions or other pve stuff trough a lfg interface.
The duty officer system ala a enhanced swtor "crew mission" adds a little more dept to your crew.
Ground combat has now some kind of fps perspective.
Some areas got a reskin, like the klingon homeworld.
It seems the foundry (player content) fix some content holes...
Skill points make more sense now.
New mission looking better including some of the old missions that got a quality pass like doomsday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FePdEi_f0I

Bad
I still dont like the endgame pve stuff, ground mission bah.
PvP no idea what happen. From the few missions I played it was a nightmare. Hope you have a escort ship (w stealth).
The UI is better then the SWTOR one, at last you can move the windows but &$%&$%%$&$ the "auction house" UI.

No Idea how the new currency works out. I have a klingon and fed at max. lvl and I have no desire to buy anything out of the shop.
I do like the space battles  and for a f2p game it is not that bad but something is still missing......................not playing.............

Oh and alienware has still 1k keys if the are still working? http://www.alienwarearena.com/giveaway/star-trek-online-subscription-bundle/

The duty missions seem pretty....nifty.  I'll probably log back in to see what happened.
