The server just crashed due to population load. File under "nice problems to have".

And a few tips:

Duty officer assignments - run these all the time. Even if it means throwing random redshirts who lack any relevant aptitude at a problem. It's essentially free income with (mostly) low risk. Duty officer aptitudes ('honourable', 'logical' or the career ones) count as half-a-level, so a common-rarity officer with two relevant aptitudes to the assignment is more-or-less equal to a green-rarity officer with none.

Tradeskills: Put all the stuff in your bank. You don't need it on you for R&D to work.

Autofire: is currently bugged. /defaultautoattack 1 turns it back on. You might need to use it twice (enable it, select the weapons you want, and then enable it again).

Yuck.  Hope the duty officers don't have a % chance to overthrow their captain, klingon style.

Cardassian Lock Box

Starting after the maintenance this Thursday (February 9, 2012), a new item will begin dropping as loot in the game. This item is called a Cardassian Lock Box.

When a Cardassian Lock Box is opened, it will grant the character that opens it a random reward. These rewards range from a rare starship, to some great new items. The possible rewards are:

A box with a Cardassian Galor class cruiser starship.
A box with a powerful cross-faction starship console. When opened by a Federation character, it contains the Graviton Pulse Generator console (which is normally only available to Klingon players who purchase the Puyjaq Raptor), and when opened by a Klingon character, it contains an Impulse Burst console (which is normally only available to Federation players that purchase the Gladius Escort). This is the only way to get a console that is normally restricted to the other faction, making these consoles especially valuable.
A box with a Crossfire Tribble. This ground combat themed Tribble provides a small damage boost in shooter mode and a small damage resistance in RPG mode.
A Duty Officer Pack just like the ones sold in the C-Store.
A Large Commendation Boost, which grants a 20% bonus to Commendation XP for up to 10,000 CXP before it is fully consumed.
A smaller Commendation Boost, which grants a 20% bonus to Commendation XP for up to 2,000 CXP before it is fully consumed.
A Skill Point Boost, which grants a 20% bonus to Skill Points for up to 1,000 SP before it is fully consumed.
A box with a shuttle pet. When opened by a Federation character, it contains a Runabout companion pet. When opened by a Klingon character, it contains a Toron shuttle companion pet.
A box with a Dilithium Horta companion pet that can be used by both Federation and Klingon characters.
A box with a Sehlat Cub companion pet that can be used by both Federation and Klingon characters.
A box that when opened unlocks the Deep Space Nine Federation Costume Pack for the account. It can be opened by either Federation or Klingon, but the resulting costume parts are only usable by Federation characters on the account.
A Shield Pack box. This box contains a random blue or purple quality shield for a starship or personal shield for ground use. The item awarded is at the appropriate level for the character that opens the box.
A box with a stack of Gamma Quadrant commodity items for use in Duty Officer missions. There are 6 different commodity types available, and you’ll get a 5 item stack of one of the types. These are used for some new DS9 themed Duty Officer missions that are being introduced at the same time as the Cardassian Lock Box.
A box with a stack of double bonus consumables that improve two stats in combat, instead of just one. For example, a Shield and Auxiliary Battery. There are 8 different consumables (4 for space and 4 for ground) available, and you’ll get a 5 item stack of one of the consumable types.

All items that can be awarded by the Cardassian Lock Box can be traded or sold on the auction house to other players. So if you get something you don’t want or need, you can trade them away. The Lock Boxes themselves can also be traded or auctioned if you don’t want to open them.

To open one of the Lock Boxes, a character will also need an item called a Master Key. Master Keys can be purchased in the C-Store for 100 CP, or in a 10-pack for 900 CP. If you attempt to open a Lock Box without a Master Key, you will get a message explaining that you need one. If you have more than one Master Key, then only one key will be consumed each time you open a Lock Box.

While playing, be on the lookout for special Gold Lock Boxes! These boxes have significantly higher odds of rewarding the more desirable items.

Complete details on the Cardassian Lock Box will be available in an FAQ that will be released on Thursday. Details on the Galor class starship will be the subject of tomorrow’s blog.

I'll be tossing any I find into space.

The Winter Event seemed fair - you could grind for one box, or buy however many you want with CP. This is a dick move - you have to grind AND buy.

I don't like the lockbox concept in Fallen Earth, and I don't like it here.

I don't know when I look how good the chance was to get a jim'hadar ship the last time. I still don't like it, even if you turn your ingame dilithium into cryptic points.

Thank you for that.  I was tempted to try STO out now that it's "free".   Now I'm not tempted at all.

No, I don't need a Jem'Hadar ship, I have no clue what it is or does even.  It's the whole concept of "random miniscule chances of good stuff when you buy a ticket".  That stuff is addictive and specifically, intentionally takes advantage of those susceptible to that kind of addiction.  Like me. And I HATE being taken advantage of, especially for money.  I spent way too much in a casino one night.  I've not stepped foot in one since.  I spent way too much on MT:G cards back in the beginning.  It took a few months to shake free of that addiction, but I've not bought another CCG card since.  Kinda the same with comic books and probably a couple other things I've deliberately forgotten.

I guess I'm a slow learner, but I do learn and I seem to have a built-in defense mechanism for avoiding repeating anything that's too similar.  I get sick. For some period of time stepping into a casino or buying a pack of magic cards used to excite me, like heart racing hands shaking teenager rounding third base excited. Now the mere thought of doing either makes me nauseous.  Seeing the MT:G cards behind the counter at the drug store does nothing to me, but the last time I walked into a game/comics store (oh yeah, Battletech, HeroClix, and Warhammer tabletop miniatures was a near miss) I barely turned around and ran back out in time before I spewed on the floor.  So now, I play subscription games where my cost is fixed, or free games with simple, non-punitive restrictions on free play and NO real money options for a random chance at uber loot.  The minute that mechanism shows up in a game, I'm gone.  Period.  And I'm taking as many of my friends and acquaintances with me as I possibly can, and discouraging anyone else I have the chance to from risking being taken for a sucker.

Yes, I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?

Exciting times

The lockboxes went live yesterday at 6pm my time. By 9Pm the lithium exchange had completely crashed as people were hammering it for C-Store points. The exchange was hammered and laggy as hell because of people searching for master keys to buy. And 99% of people were sick to their back teeth of the "Some@wanker has unlocked a Cardassian Galor class ship" system messages that were popping up. Yes they were globally announcing people winning Galors, and everyone was raging about it. So much for the "fun" aspect of getting randomm stuff when they are activly promoting the ship I shoved my notification window to the bottom corner of my screen where I would not notice it. And some clown on my fleet was actually trying to start up a business selling master keys and telling everyone the chances of winning a Galor was 50% not 0.5%.

Some wag was flying around in a Galor called the USS Waste Of Money. As far as we can tell its basically a cruiser with a very fast turn rate. Whoopy doo.

I am the proud owner of 4 cardassian lockboxes and 4 "Rare" mystery Boxes after one nights play (granted I play missions on elite difficulty so I have a nice drop rate). I'm chucking the whole lot into space. You need 100C-Store points to buy the key to unlock one of them and I think I'm keeping my money, thanks. It really is the most cynical move I've seen from any MMO developer, and I've played Eve ffs.

It was very, very obvious this wasn't about the fun but, "Holy shit this made us a fuckload of money last time.  How can we maximize it this time?"  Priming the pump with global announcements only feeds the frenzy and plays on the human psyche like a motherfucker.

The F2P games are quickly learning the lessons of casinos and using their tricks without having any of the regulations.  What a surprise.  awesome, for real

I just started back into this game - hadn't played since beta. Having fun with no money...

Don't space your lockboxes...I made 100k a piece selling them on the exchange. Totally eliminated any worries about energy credits for my foreseeable future.

EDIT: and they are down to 1k/box and still dropping today....gotta love irrational exuberance!

Yeah noticed it was unintended after I posted. I suppose having to many users is a good problem to have.

Also, with the frequency of "Such and such got a ship" announcements, they must be making bank.

Hopefully they divert some of it from making money hats to upgrading the server  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

But yes, it's a nice complaint to have. Been about a year since I played and leveling is a lot more streamlined and less grindy (all those bloody patrol missions) than it was back then. And the new skill tree is much easier to decipher too. Oh and ground combat doesn't make me want to cut myself any more so that's always a plus. And sometimes it's nice to just blow up spaceships without having to worry about transversal velocity and gankers!

You won't have to grind for the new boxes, they appear to be litterally throwing them at you as loot (that way you'll feel the need to buy loads of keys). I got 4 yesterday just running the 2800 feature mission, and a similar number running it on a different toon this morning.

I like the key buying less than I liked the xmas boxes, at least you didn't _have_ to spend c-store points at xmas (unless you wanted more boxes) but this time theres no getting around it unless you dont want the box content at all (which I'm sure is the whole point).

I would have much preferred they had gone with restricting _use_ of canon breaking ships rather than restricting availability.

Heh. I found a gold box and I had 100 cstore points sitting around so I thought what the hell. Of course a Galor Class cruiser fell out of litterally the first box I've ever opened.  why so serious?

Surprising thing is I was immediatly inundated with people throwing buy offers at me, offering 30 million+ ECs for the thing as my name popped up oll over the server. It was actually pretty scary.

Needless to say I kept it  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

It's surprising how I haven't seen a single one in game after all the galor spam. Zone chats are getting more grumpy about the constant alerts. I succumbed to curiosity to buy a few keys and ended up with some decent duty officers. Still not worth it.

The ship isnt worth it either. I'm actually typing up a review for my fleet magazine, and I'll post it here once the thing is publisned. For now thouigh its  basicly is a cruiser with more maneuverability, less crew and lesser tanking ability that comes with some nice but not spectacular weapons.

I started playing this last night.

I thought it was decent.

+ The game systems look fun to explore. At the very least I want to keep playing, getting better ships and checking out different missions.
+ The game is well-rendered. Space looks far better than the ground.
+ I like that they included so much customization. I made a character more at home in the Systems Alliance than Starfleet, but it'll do!
+ The random mission generator and player generated content look interesting.
+ It seems like it is very well-supported and has had ongoing updates for some time.
+ The RMT isn't terribly intrusive.
+ Miscellaneous: F2P on Steam! Spock narrating the story. Revisiting familiar places and systems.

- The initial information dump they throw at you is intense -- I had trouble keeping track of all the resources and options available to me.
- Some options were made available to me (Dilithium Mining) that I had no idea what it was and couldn't do anyway once I found out.
- Interface is a bit difficult to tackle and manage.
- I imagine the random mission generator allure will wear off once I start seeing repeats and the grind.

I was a developer for the ill-fated Perpetual Entertainment's Star Trek Online MMO (which was later sold and successfully launched by Cryptic Studios).

Star Trek Online's #1 most common feature request from beta testers was "ship
interiors." Players didn't want to play "WoW in Spaaaace" game. They wanted to play "The Sims meet Star Trek" and relive their favorite Star Trek TV episodes. That sounds like a pretty cool game (for a small, but dedicated niche), but Perpetual's game designers scoffed and (having worked at Blizzard) proceeded to create "WoW in Space."

Is there more to the above story? I'd like to read the full account if it is around.

But Perpetual's problems weren't because they ignored player requests, so that story isn't really painting a full picture. It was "ill-fated" because Perpetual ran out of money trying to develop both Gods and Heroes and STO at the same time.

Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way."

Next time, don't make Klingon ships god machines and don't nerf other ship classes to patheticness just because people who play escorts are super whiners, ok?

Seriously the ship balance is way off. Cannons>everything. I actually did a PVP match just to clear one of the tutorial missions the other day and it was just klingon ownage. Me and this other guy were openly chatting about how pointless this was and we were just doing this for the tutorial Dilithium.
