Provocative pedo shit obviously designed to get offend people for free advertising. No-one would have given a toss at this point only he had been vocally critical of you know who so people went years back into his tweet profile. I found a montage of some of it on the Verge, no idea if this is all of it. Some of this is from 2009 so they were really digging. The latest date was 2012.

The fact that Mike Cernovich is behind this, and that Cernovich said they prove he was part of a Pedo ring, pretty much shows you where this is coming from.

Wasn't even in his profile from my understanding. These weren't hidden. They were deleted previously and he apologized for them a long time ago. They dug them up through wayback or something.

It was pure troll op more than it was politics. Archive dive, quote mine, feed it to the outrage farms, aim a blast of hate so intense the money panics over the potential bad PR and over reacts trying to "get ahead of it".

It's quite a scalp for that shithead Cernovich, and will get him street cred with the trolls as someone who can find them lulz. *That* will get used for political goals, but this was just for the practice.

I hate that it was a hit job but the tweets were numerous and pretty foul. I won't fault disney on this one, their hands were tied.

This, basically. Especially given the perception of the Disney brand.

I don't entirely agree with it, but I understand it.

Yeah, their hands were really tied by that stuff that he had publicly apologized for before they hired him in the first place.

This was a hit job and it's bullshit that he got fired over it, especially since any of that stuff should have been (and was) public knowledge back when he first got the job. I know WHY he got fired but I still think it's bullshit even having seen the tweets.

There's a difference between publicly apologizing for tweets no one really knew existed and public knowledge of those tweets.

Maybe you can get him fired too.

Seems like something it would have been reasonable to accept the apology over. 10 year old bad attempts at edgelord comedy.

Going to be a very expensive overreaction by Disney if the replacement botches it and it disappoints at box office.

I saw attempted comedy.  He certainly wasn't tweeting to be serious.  Just because he wasn't funny doesn't mean he wasn't attempting comedy.

He's a guy who got his start at Troma and around the time he wrote some of those tweets had done those PG Porn web shorts. He had a segment in Movie 43. He did some stuff like screenplays for the Scooby Doo movies but largely made a living off juvenile humor and shock. 41 at the time or not, people who know him and have worked with him say he's a better person now.

Here's my (unpopular?) opinion: while I think the GotG movies were fine I would have preferred it if it stuck closer to DnA's version. I know there's been a lot of different versions of these characters over the years, and these characters aren't even the OG guardians overall I just don't like what Gunn and the writers did with these characters. The only one that may be an improvement was Gamora, but that's because she's really just Adam Warlock's love interest and we never really get to see why she's called "the most dangerous woman in the universe".

Counterpoint: in the real world comic books are super lame and this movies are perfect.

Anyone giving any chance to them rehiring him?  I'd have said no, but the treatment of Dan Harmon gives me a touch of pause... long shot certainly, but just maybe....

It isn't exactly Disney's style. And they clearly they do back themselves to pick new directors.

Despite Iron Man 3, I was thinking Shane Black might be an interesting option.  But screw reason - I'm going to hope beyond hope that they change their mind, reevaluate and bring Gunn back.

This is the correct answer.

Or hire someone entirely new like they do most of the time and it almost always works out fine. Worrying about MCU directors is like worrying about Dr Who actors, they often seem dubious choices but then the actual thing happens and whatever else is going on, this particular decision turns out fine.

The whole thing was fucked up faux outrage. These were tweets that had been publicly gone over and he'd apologised for, they were raised when Disney hired him originally. It's concerning because it means that doing something in the past can mean getting your ass fired almost a decade later even if you've had it come up, apologised for it and moved past it. Disney almost certainly isn't going to be bringing Gunn back because it will make this a costly mistake anyway. He was hired as an ex-shockjock edgelord who had written the Scooby Doo movie. He'd be coming back on as having written and directed 2 of their biggest surprise international box office hits. No way does he resign without a significant bump in compensation.

It's also fucking outrageous because it's coming from the same people who are still defending Roy fucking Moore dating 14 year olds and that Senator who refused to do anything about his wrestlers getting sexually harrassed. It's 100% bad faith, faux outrage which is seeing cunts like Huckabee calling for police investigations of Gunn in case his bad jokes about raping children were in fact public confessions that he was predatory paedophile.

A hypocritical argument being made in bad faith is not automatically wrong.

And yes, something you said on the Internet a decade ago absolutely can get your ass fired. This should not be a surprise. And to fair to James Gunn he doesn't seem to be surprised.

It's not even a bad thing, teaching people that being assholes on the internet will come back to bite you in the ass would be a positive change to society.

I don't disagree that saying and doing horrible shit should have the potential to bite you in the ass but this carries with it the suggestion that there's not space for social forgiveness or redemption. Do something idiotic 10 years ago, confront it and learn from it and then 5 years later have some asshole bring it up again and suffer the consequences.

Ultimately I think Disney has some responsibility for this. They were aware of this shit when they hired Gunn and it's kind of ridiculous that when it comes up again their first reaction is to fire him. I think NBC hiring Roseanne Barr knowing her history of saying horrible shit was bad but they didn't fire her because someone just brought up that stuff again. They fired her because she kept doing it. If Gunn had done something new or new information had come to light then I wouldn't have a problem with this. The fact that it was shit Disney already knew about is what bothers me. It being Cernovich and a 100% bad faith thing just makes it worse but isn't a problem in and of itself.
