I'm being tortured by UPS. Wtf would it fly from Sac to Ontario to Oakland, then put out for delivery when I live hours from Oakland. I sense no D3 for me today :(

That's irritating. About ten minutes into playing my PC shuts down. I have no clue what's going on. The same thing happens in GW2 character creation, but I thought that was a GW2 bug. I can play GW2, LOTRO, GW for hours and never have a problem. It's not CPU or GPU temps. Dying power supply?

But it's been three years and it's a Core2Duo, so even now New Egg is packing an i5/2500, HD6950, and assorted motherboards and cases into a box. I'll be able to play this weekend at least.

That's really torture, Numtini. Glad you're getting a new box, but that's really weird. Sounds like temp but it's not? Wonder what it is.

Pull some RAM if you have multiple sticks. Weird problems can sometimes be attributed to that, so it is worth a shot anyway....

It can still be the powersupply even if it's not actually dying. If it's not capable of keeping up with your system.

Yep, my PSU was shutting the fuck off recently too. Purchased a new gold rated Corsair, and I'm good to go. No more random shut offs, which I was originally attributing to a dying vid card (which was dying for other reasons).

I think it was the 12 volt rails on my old one. Couldn't keep up the job past 2 years. It was a relatively shoddy Thermaltake PSU, which was always loud and pretty hot.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Edit: Problem found. I did a full driver strip and reinstall and suddenly the card is showing as overheating. So something was screwed up with catalysts temp reports. I'll figure out tonight if its a clogged fan or a cable got snagged or if its dead.
...

I have the memtest CD already, just didn't have time to run it before work. I don't like that answer though as I'm doing video conversions (we got a tivo which you can upload stuff to) and

The answer I really like though is the power supply. The specs are more than adequate for the system--I did my research on this one--so it's probably just going bad. I need to take a look and see if I can get it out without taking everything apart--if so I have another in the closet and can just pop it in.

I'd like to get it settled, so I can pass on or sell the system. It's still quite solid even for gaming (E8600 & HD4870).

Yeah I went to change chars to swap some crafting mats around and couldn't get back into the friend's game because battle.net is creaking under the strain. However it did make me realise what time it was and go and do some other things that needed doing... :)

Anyway, all runs fine on my main gaming rig but on the media PC it will only let me run at 800x600. I'm guessing it's because this PC has a non-standard DPI set since it's plugged into a 40" TV rather than a monitor. No big deal, annoying that this kind of problem happens so often with a high DPI though.

I managed to pick up one of three CEs this morning at the local Best Buy as it opened.  Got their an hour early or I wouldn't have too, quite a line formed outside.  I tried a couple midnight openings last night as well just to try and sneak a CE out of those, though they were admitted long shots and I didn't get one.  So, woke up, tried again, and got lucky.  On the plus side, not having the game until ~10am this morning worked to my advantage I think, the servers were quite stable by the time I got around to playing.

I've been told in the past residences are almost always the last deliveries of the day.  The order of delivery is  Priority AM (Before 9am) , Next-day AM (before 11am) then regular deliveries starting with businesses.  So unless your house is between two business districts, chances are you won't get it until the end of the driver's day.

Just what I'd been told in the past, though. No idea how accurate it is.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

Game is not playable.  Epic fail from what I can see so far.  Not a huge amount of testing yet, but couldn't log in (got error) before work.  Left a bit early to get in some time before son's band concert after work and faced with queue ending in another error.  Doesn't matter if want to play a solo or multi game.  Can't play the game.

Shit, most MMO launches go smoother than this.  But this is the price we pay for a server-side ARPG I guess.  Problem I have is if they were going to go so server-side then they should've had mechanics in place to deal with the load.

It may be a case of "we know the concurrent demand is going to be higher on the first day than it ever will be again and we don't want to spend on the extra hardware".

In the relative scheme of things it's pennies against the billions+ they'll be making.  Factor in negative press/marketing and they actually lose more then they'd have invested in infrastructure.

So meh, it's just silly any way you slice it.

I would guess that's 99% of it.  And they do the math the same every single time so I don't think it's the "pennies" that Ghambit is talking about.

It's also different for a Blizzard than it is for any other company launching an MMO (or similar) as full servers mean there's a potential limit on how many copies you're going to sell.  The install base for D3 is already so massive before launch that any bad word-of-mouth they're getting from "error codes trending in the middle of the night" is going to be outweighed by the positive word-of-mouth once people are actually playing.
