Ah ha, got it, lets see how long I can hold this one, the chick I stole it from keeps scrolling me and is apparently unhappy I took it from her. Oh well, thats what you get for leaving 20 soldiers on a level 2 monument.

Yeah, some of the NO community is having a reeeeeally hard time grasping that if you don't fight other people, stay the fuck away from the monument part of the game. My favorite forum poster over there is lynnk, who has decided anyone who attacks an occupied monument is secretly some sort of baby raping murderer.

I went back and forth with someone over a monument plot, before anything was built there, until like four rounds and then the other guy just gave up. It was a little sad. Now I have maybe a dozen soldiers guarding it, and it's only level 1, but I'm curious how long I'll be able to hold it.
I'm mostly interested in someone taking it from me, so I can take it back, because that's fun. I don't see much advantage in holding a monument; you get morale for your troops, and that's it? But while it's yours, you can harvest limestone, and that's what I'm really interested in.

If you have a city somewhat close to some high level people, Limestone probably will sell on the market.... although last few days nothing is selling on the market... Hafta bake my own bread... grumble grumble...

I could use 1200 perfume, anyone need limestone or gold? edit. I am tempted to raid my neighbors temples, there are a couple half finished pyramids nearby. Could churn out a couple hundred troops, raid 1, then take the army to the second... loot, turtle up... I may do this at weeks end, actually.

I can say that turtling up is damn expensive. Some low level guy took my plot away twice, so now I keep a hundred troops there plus 50 laborers, 3000+ bread a day, you feel that.

I can probably afford 500 troops - my plan is pretty sound proof. Worse comes to worse I ditch 1 of my monuments and hole up at my main one. edit. As a matter of fact 1 of them is a fully built pyramid with 2 troops 1 nome away- sending troops now to pillage then abandon the plot. edit2. FOILED! You can only own 2 monuments.

The whole combat thing is pretty much broken right now, I'm about to take my 2nd monument and I'm just going to throw 50 or so of my 100 troops in each, it's not worth the bread cost to defend them

Hmm... I'm pondering something, if you were only interested in farming limestone, what would be a reason for not getting a plot insanely far out, like at 450N or something. Laborers are free to ship out there and the limestone is free to ship back... wouldn't have to defend it as you'd get a huge attack warning and could easily ship everything out just before.
Building a monument out there wouldn't be good though as sending defenders would cost a fortune currently, and attacking is still free. You would be able to send just enough troops to defeat the attakers though, as I believe troops sent through the exchange travel twice as fast as attackers and would be capped at 24 hours instead of 72, you'd have 2 whole days to organize the defense and send it!
This is sounding better and better. I may just try it.

It seems like most people don't bother attacking sites without monuments. You can take a site, leave a token guard of a few guys on it, fill it with workers, and just make sure to ship your limestone back at regular intervals. If someone raids it, all they get is whatever limestone and bread was left between shipments, and you just retake it from them (or, if you want to exact a little vengeance, take another unoccupied plot, since owning a plot actually curtails their ability to raid other people until they can get someone else to take it from them).
I've currently got one plot with a monument that I defend with a relatively hefty force, and a plot that I'm just farming with about a dozen soldiers watching it. Neither has been attacked yet and I've held them for a little more than a week. There's another guy in my nome who's doing about the same thing but with about half as many soldiers, and it looks like he's only ever been attacked once.

OK - finally took the monument I was eyeballing. Didn't have the UBER loot I was hoping for, but it is level 4. I am expecting repercussions for my actions, so bolstering my monuments with a good amount of troops and keeping a couple hundred in reserve.

Monuments go down 1 level when you take them over, so if you capture a level 5 monument, you get a level 4.
On that note, Ard, you might want to throw some soldiers at your monument in the next 3.5 hours, I saw "6 soldiers" and clicked the attack button before I realized it was you ^_^

Thats me, i took the plot and then just killed all my men. It really is not worth the bread to keep them. EDIT: NVM, i don't have a monument, just the plot that i am farming for limestone.

Yeah, I was talking about Elpeco. I was going to avoid/ignore the whole monument thing until I noticed that this guy about a fourth my size had two plots and nobody was attacking him. I figure all I have to do to keep my plots is put up a better defense than he does.

Monuments are worth keeping once you hit a certain level, 2 level 5 monuments gives you a 10% production bonus in all your cities, so if you've got 400 pop in each city and breaking even on bread, you get another 120/hr for free that you could use to keep a small standing army. Or, just leave it at 0 and when someone takes it, take another poorly defended one.
Ard, got your monument, sorry ):

This is pure fucking genius. I am expecting retaliation for my recent takeover of a plot - would be a LOT cheaper to take a nome in the 500's instead of keeping it local. I may also found my next city in the upper numbers. edit. Ditched the monument I took. Feel free to have at it (the one with 0 troops!)

Quote is still not modify.
And at least it upgraded to 5 today and had almost no resources on it when you took it, so not a huge loss.
Edit: Okay, it became a huge loss. My level 5 pyramid is now a level 0 limestone pit. Crush the guy south of me's pyramid, he took mine back because you attacked him, and it went back and forth to the point where it's dead now.

Monuments are worth keeping once you hit a certain level, 2 level 5 monuments gives you a 10% production bonus in all your cities, so if you've got 400 pop in each city and breaking even on bread, you get another 120/hr for free that you could use to keep a small standing army.
I've done some calculations on this. I figure each worker produce about a value of about 2.5 bread per hour*. Each completely built monument gives you a bonus of 5% to production, thus you gain a net production advantage measured in bread given by 2.5*N*0.05, where N is the population of all your cities. Since each solider cost one bread per hour to support, you can use this formula to see how large an army the monument pays for. I, for instance, have two citities with 470 and 405 in population for a total of 875 workers. Using the formula above, I can see that I gain 109 bread per hour by having a level 5 monument, which again means that if I have more than 109 soldiers. guarding it, they cost me more in upkeep than what I gain from the monument. If I take or build another level 5 monument, I get twice the production bonus and thus can have another 109soldiers. This means that it really isn't worth defending monuments with more than around 100 troops, except perhaps for the limestone. * The 2.5 bread per worker per hour figure is aproximate and varies a lot depending on what you produce. The workers you have producing bread directly produce 2.4 bread per worker per hour, but they also eat one bread per worker hour, so the surpluss is only 1.4. For resources, the market price is usually in the 4-6 range for basic resources. Since the worker producing this value also consumes a bread per hour in producing it, the actual surpluss production with those prices are between 3 and 5. This means that if you only use your workers to produce bread directly, your production is 1.4 bread per worker per hour, but if you use them all to produce a valuable basic resource, it could be as high as 5. I chose 2.5 as a conservative number.

The limestone is a rather big thing to overlook. The workers mining the limestone don't count against your cities' limits, so they essentially pay for themselves if you sell the limestone even at 1 a pop. At 2 a pop, each worker pays for his own upkeep plus one soldier to guard him. At 3 a pop, each worker pays for 2 soldiers. At 4 a pop (which is a pretty realistic price), two soldiers per worker and a profit of 1 bread left over.
Assuming, of course, you're selling all the limestone instead of using it yourself. But if you weren't using it yourself you'd be buying that limestone off the market with the fruits of your cities' labors, so its value is the same either way.

Well, I can't try it. It's impossible to attack monument plots before the game seeds players in that nome. Bah, I was planning on building city 4 out in the middle of nowhere and building my pyramids next to it, but no go. Seems odd that cities can be built way out there, but no monuments.

If anyone needs kohl, gold, oil, cosmetics or perfume (I keep all my own jewelry, bitches), shoot me an in-game message. I can do big quantities, but I need to be warned because I am a giant market whore and usually don't keep much lying around. The raw stuff, anyway, I AM starting to stockpile for a fourth city...
