If you're looking at that build, bear in mind they did really skimp a little on the graphics card. The CPU is a little weaksauce as well. So if you were thinking of substituting a couple of pieces of hardware, those would be the ones to look at.

It's still not what I would call a great build for years to come, but it will do for the next couple years.

From what I gather, the CPU doesn't seem to be much of a factor with this game (especially after hearing what schild said). I know it isn't taxing mine.

Anyhow, one last thing -- what's a safe bet if I wanted to run med-highish on a 20" monitor?

AoC uses your CPU if it's there to use. Uses all 4 of my cores to about 50%.

-Group Quests with objectives like break a statue or burn a tent, these objects are surrounded by this games version of elites. but you only get credit for one person per statue broken, so it can be a Pain the ass to get it done.

GW had amazing art direction. They did a lot with what few polygons they had to work with.
They really do.  Characters are beautiful and I never feel like I'm in a low-poly world.

I'd like other games to use their engine, except I know they won't have the artists to pull it off.

It's really not a crappy engine. Like, AT ALL. We're running it on a single core P4 3.0ghz machine next to us with an ATI X850. On 4x AGP no less. At 30fps solid.

Schild, I'm running a Q6600, 2 Gigs ram, and a x850, and I'm having a hard time finding a sweet spot for graphics. Either it looks like ASS or runs like ASS. Not sure what effects the fact that shaders are fucked for these older ATI cards is having. Third item on their tech issues sticky

Also I'm running this shit on a 37' monitor  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly? thats probably not helping issues.

If you build a new computer right now on a budget...build around this:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127329

Or other cards like it.  $500 is a little tight for building a gaming rig IMO...a better sweet spot is around $750.

Of if you are REALLY on a budget, you can go with this card instead. We put one in PopTart's machine after her ATI X800 died, and she's seen no noticeable performance drops that I know of. And I think that's with settings in things like Half-Life 2 Deathmatch turned way up.

I can already run half life 2 on high easily (although that card you pointed out would be an improvement over what I have).

This game's requirements goes WAY beyond that....Although in actuality, the actual visuals don't. Like I said earlier, it's about as unforgiving as NWN2.

I'll tell you one thing I don't like for sure: The anxiety I feel every time I see another bug or outage message. I keep worrying that I suckered myself into another Funcom travesty. I'm praying to the gaming gods that this will not come to pass as I really like the game so far.

Funcom continues to piss people off. Priests of Mitra got nerfed with the latest patch, nothing in the patch notes.

Come on, this is like MMORPG 101: Put nerfs in the patch notes. You are not smarter than the playerbase, they will find out and have it posted on the forums before you get back from coffee break.

The game is fun as of level 6 but I know some thing I don't mind now are going to bother me in a few weeks. The animations? horrible, Horrible. I look like some retarded spider monekey with cerebral palsy and have you even tried jumping?! The game has that ultra-realistic plasticy look that plagued EQ2, not as bad but when I'm wearing cloth, it shouldn't look like it's all made of rubber.

All in all the game feels like it just wasn't quite finished. There's a fun game under there but it needs polish.

Well... I have encountered two things...

I did get stuck twice in seperate places. And /stuck just put me on queue for a CSR. So I recalled instead. Two problems there -- the areas I got stuck in were absolute no brainers. Kind of hard to describe, but they shouldn't have been overlooked. And the fact that /stuck doesn't relocate you is kind of lame (even Shadowbane did that).

Seriously though, the game looks fine so far, though I have admittedly only played 10 levels.

We had a talent (sorry, "feat") that made one of our healing spells also have an AoE damage effect.  At level 31, it did more damage than my strongest single-target direct damage spell, and cost less mana.  And was AoE.  And healed.  It was obviously broken.  It needed to be changed.  I still feel like the class is kinda insanely powerful, honestly.  It's cool having a powerful healer and all, but this seems a little overboard.

No, many parts of the game *are* unpolished while other parts aren't. Depending on how you weight things that'll determine how you view the game overall. For example the starter quests are very polished as are the combat mechanics (ignoring the ridiculous animations) and the overall world building. On the other hand the UI is horrific and many of the animation transitions are basically nonexistent (e.g. try jumping against an object, it makes the jump animation look even more horrible than when you are jumping straight up and down) on top of the fact that many of the animations look like total crap. The Night quests difficulty is also horribly borked making the game frustrating difficult depending on what class you pick.

Having played Hellgate London, I just can't bring myself to complain about the Animation. And having played every other MMOG, I just can't really complain about the GUI other than the minimap and chat box. Also, complaining about the JUMPING animation is just reaching. And I'm a harsh motherfucker.

Few complaints so far, though I did have one minor annoyance I came across, it may have already been noted here.  I had no idea that, for example, my conqueror had a buff I started with until I enabled the extra hot bars after first getting to Tortuga.  Mostly my fault for running straight into things without taking a second to check things, but it still took me by surprise.

The number of people who do pay attention to jumping animation (because they can't help it but jump at least once every 5 seconds) and *will* bitch about it, is unreal. LotRO tweaked their female jump animation recently; change resulted in long whining threads on official forums with people declaring this change totally ruins the game for them, because now they feel like retards when they jump. (yeah, somehow they didn't feel like retards jumping all over the place beforeawesome, for real

Ok, while the lasted group of patches has helped, im still having lots of graphical weirdness.  Im running in low quality, inside a window and still will see scenes like the below every 10-15 minutes or so.  This is what my first glipse of the city looked like.  If i rotated to the right, i could see normal terrain, rotate back to city, got it again.

Any ideas what the heck is going on?

You can sort of change them. I remapped my strafe keys to A and D but thanks to the horrific UI mentioned above I can't remap rotate left and right to Z and C (which are the default strafe keys) so I have to use the mouse to do that.

Oh, and they are sending out a stock email with a long list of "answers to common questions" I sent them a couple of emails one saying I couldn't log in despite having my account active, and another telling them that it had resolved itself and to ignore the previous email. I get the same response for both emails. (I.e. 2 of the same email were sent to me.)

Greetings,

We understand that there are still some problems and confusion with a
number of player accounts as well as in-game technical issues. This
email, while a form response, was specifically written to address the
major issues and to direct you to the appropriate places to help you
solve your problems. Please read through it to find the section that
addresses your issue. We understand some account and in-game issues are
quite specific (or even unique) in nature and will require us to look
into them individually. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL IF THAT IS THE
CASE. REPLIES TO THIS EMAIL WILL NOT BE ANSWERED.

If you are having an account or billing issue, please direct your query
to the account departments. That email address is account@ageofconan.com
<mailto:account@ageofconan.com>.

If you are having a technical issue, whether in client set-up or in game
problem, please direct your query to the tech department. That email
address is tech@ageofconan.com <mailto:tech@ageofconan.com>.

ACCOUNT ISSUES

*If your account issue dates back to the period between the 14^th of may
and the 19^th * of May and is in regards to Early Access, please note
that Early Access was closed on the 14^th and if you didn’t specifically
purchase the 5.00 USD/EUR pass, then your account was not eligible and
thus would remain inactive until the main launch on May 20 (or May 23^rd
for European players). This includes many Authentication Error issues.

*If you did purchase your EA pass but your account froze*, it means that
your payment was denied and requires resubmission. That is done
automatically for you and your account will auto-unfreeze but in the
case that the payment continued to fail, get back to us using the
account email address listed above.

*For those that purchased the EA pass and were never able to utilize the
pre-launch playtime because of technical issues*, we will compensate
your account. In this instance, please create a new ticket with the
subject header COMPENSATION FOR LOST EA.

*If your account suddenly froze or was canceled on or after May 20^th *,
it is because the pre-order has ended and the retail key is required to
continue playing. To upgrade your account with the retail key, you need
to first log into your account at
https://register.ageofconan.com/account
<imap://geoffh@localhost:143/fetch%3EUID%3E/INBOX%3E72353> and enter
your Funcom account information. From your account page, select the
fourth option, Add card/Create account. Enter your game key in the box
and click validate. Once you have done that you will be prompted to
either create a new account with the key or attach it to a pre-existing
account. Select correct option and then choose which account to attach
it to. At that point you will be all set.

*If you are receiving an error about your username and password being
invalid,* please check your account and make sure that you are using the
correct password. Even with only one account, you can have two
passwords- one for the registration site and one for the game log in.
Make sure you are using your AoC log in password when logging into the game.

*If you are unable to create an account with your pre-order key*, and it
is after May 20^th , you need to wait for your retail copy. Pre-order
keys ceased to be viable account creation keys once the game went to
wide launch. You will first need to register your retail key. At that
point, you will be able to add your pre-paid key.

*If your /claim is not working*, please make sure your retail key is
registered. You cannot utilize the /claim function until your account
has been upgraded with the retail key.

If you have any other account questions, please check out this forum post:

http://support.ageofconan.com/category.php?id=35

TECHNICAL ISSUES

*If you are receiving an error while patching, like ERROR 105*, please
create a new ticket with the subject header ERROR 105 and include your
patcher.log file form the AoC folder. We have QA personnel standing by
to assist.

If you are receiving an Authentication Error, it is more than likely the
result of one of the aforementioned account issues. If your account was
not enabled for play, then that error will appear. However, for those
instances when a closed account was not the culprit, check the following
link for a list of the possible causes and their corresponding fixes:

On switching movement keys around, or making pairs of assigned keys do different things, you might try changing one set, like assigning new strafe buttons, then hitting apply before changing the old keys to something.  That might let it happen, I'm pretty sure that's what I did to get past that annoyance.

It was saying "You can climb here!" because there were ladders leading down, incase you fell and didn't want to sacrifice yourself to the lava to start over again.

Waggling the mouse to use somthing? The gear icon appears just above your hotbar if you get close to somthing you can use.
