Goddamnit.

I finally caved on DA Monday, because of the constant "zomg this is awesome" in the DA thread.  I knew I should have waited.

FROTH.

I want the THQ pack, so bad.

That THQ bundle is ridiculous.

Post by: CaptainNapkin on November 25, 2009, 06:42:42 PM
Does anyone know if the standard edition of Dragon Age on Steam still includes the Blood Dragon Armor and The Stone Prisoner? It's not listed on the standard version page but the way they list it on the Deluxe it leads me to believe it may be. Need a 2nd copy of this for the wife.

Also, though I may never find time to play it... is a romp through Far Cry 2 worth 10 bucks? I got half way through the first before I got bored.

Lastly... Osmos? 2 bucks, why not right? Don't know anything about this one.

Tis' the season to buy games I'll never get to, but at least via Steam I don't end up with sealed boxes mocking me from a shelf.

Post by: caladein on November 25, 2009, 06:50:51 PM
Both the Blood Dragon Armor and Stone Prisoner are in any new version of the game (source (http://dragonage.bioware.com/addon/)).  The DDE just adds Warden's Keep (which is pretty good, but is only $7 by itself) and a couple of items.

That THQ bundle is ridiculous.

So true. There's enough good gaming there to keep you occupied for more than a year. Sadly I already own about 90% of it.  :heartbreak:

With my unexpected adoration of Torchlight, I'm really considering the THQ pack, the only thing that kind of holds me back would be the plethora of RTS games in there.

So you two should go halves, and split the games between you.  Everyones a winner babay!  :why_so_serious:

Too bad you don't own any of the games purchased through Steam so you can't do that.

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale
Post by: Kageru on November 26, 2009, 11:00:48 PM
Even if you "owned" the collection the license terms probably wouldn't let you re-sell individual parts.

If you did own it the First Sale Doctrine would apply.

Well, I'm not in the US. But wouldn't that apply to sale of the whole collection and the license is still likely to limit sale or transfer of sub-components? I'm fairly sure when I bought a collection of RPG games that was the case.

In general it certainly is a disadvantage of steam I hadn't fully considered though, because I don't tend to trade in or resale my old games.

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale
Post by: Merusk on November 27, 2009, 06:40:14 AM
Nope. You own the discs as the first owner, you're free to do whatever you want with them including resale.  Autodesk just had a ruling against them on this very topic.

Jesus steam knows how to make me give up money.

FYI, I think the steam sale is bugged, cause it says the PvZ sale ends on the 26th and I just bought it today for $5 still  :awesome_for_real:

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale

Protip: They pulled a reverse-Dragon Age with Cities XL.  Both editions are half-off, but they only listed the Limited Edition on the sale page.

Also, fuck Valve and their amazing sales.

I actually bought Osmos for $2 (pretty much because it was only $2) and it's a cute little game. Kind of reminds me of the cell stage in Spore, which was easily the best part of that game.

Just bought the THQ pack.  I'm not really a fan of non-traditional RTSes (Dawn of War, CoH), but I couldn't pass up Titan Quest, Red Faction Guerilla or Saint's Row 2 for that price.

New sales up.  Nothing eye-popping with this set, mostly because I own a lot of it.  Might bite on Trine at $10 though.

Borderlands 33% off down to 53.59 US$.... which would look like a good deal if I didn't know it orginally listed at ~45 US$

Guess I'll get my fix of post apocalyptic shootyness in Fallen Earth.

I'm really tempted to get Trine, but with everyone else I've purchased over the past few days, it'll have to wait until another sale much later down the line.

I'm not gonna say it's a perfect port - the inventory is a tiny bit finicky, but I got used to it pretty quick. I will however say that if every game were as well-ported as RE5, I'd stop buying multiplatform games for consoles.

So, yea, it's a good port. 8 Hours left on the sale.

Maybe it's not related since it was a Valve package, but I know when I bought the Orange Box I was able to gift my extra copy of HL2 to someone else.

Ended up picking up Trine yesterday. Fun little game, really, and pretty much blows away Braid in the actual "are you actually having fun doing this" department as far as new wave platformers go.

Buying Mirror's Edge and Monkey Island SE, because...well, what the fucking hell, it'll be like 8 bucks for a few extra games to screw with.

EDIT: Also, Commander Keen? WTF, really?

The Orange Box is the only time AFAIK Valve had made an exception, and even then you still technically didn't "own" the game. If you look at Valve's other bundles, there's no option for gifting in any of those.

These are the conditions where you'd get extra copies (source (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4502-TPJL-2656)):

Quote from: Steam Support
  • Own "Left 4 Dead" and then go on to purchase "Left 4 Dead + Left 4 Dead 2 Bundle"
  • Purchase the available four pack for one of the following games: “Left 4 Dead”, "Left 4 Dead 2", or "Borderlands"
  • Own “Half-Life 2” and/or “Half-Life 2: Episode One” and then go on to purchase “The Orange Box” or the "Valve Complete Pack"
  • Own “Half-Life 2: Episode One” and then go on to purchase the "Half-Life 2: Episode Pack”

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale
Post by: Trippy on November 30, 2009, 10:29:11 PM
Huh interesting. Valve is incredibly inconsistent about putting the notice in the package that you can gift certain games in that package. I looked at a few of them including the complete package and none of them had the notice except for the Orange Box. Of course most of the other packages I didn't look at did have the notice :oh_i_see:

The Orange Box was the start of a trend; I think they're doing it for all Valve game bundles now.  They might not be allowed to do it for bundles from other publishers.

Cheap Monkey Island SI was all I ended up picking up.  I spent a grand total of three fitty ($1 iphone game included) this black Friday.

Too many games, not enough time.  I blame my MMO-like Dragon Age addiction.

Post by: NowhereMan on December 02, 2009, 07:16:56 PM
I got Evil Genius. It's kind of cool but it's a real time eater and not because anything especially great is happening but because stuff just seems to take a while (never too long really) plus lots of random crap is going on. That combined with a lack of real missions (rather constant tasks that need to be done) means that instead of just dipping in and out when you like there's always some other little thing you want to hang on for while you've got stuff distracting you. It's a recipe for, "Woah is it an hour later?" combined with, "What the fuck have I even done in this game?" I've never really felt like I've been completely wasting time playing a game before.

RE: Mirror's Edge.  I bought it when it was on sale for the same price a few weeks back, and I think it was worth it.  Its more of a novelty than a game, and when it wears off, it kind of loses its appeal, but for that price, you can easily get your money's worth.  Beware though,  if you are prone to motion sickness, the game can really cause a mean bout of it.

So that means STALKER (free practically duh) and Mirrors Edge are the big two and Mirrors Edge was on sale for 5 not long ago.  Was it good on pc?  I thought it looked cool but remember the ps3 version getting panned for repetition and stuff back when it came out.  Id try it unless it was a bad console port and is going to piss me off that way.

I picked Mirror's Edge up on PC the first time it was on sale and enjoyed it very much, didn't really have any complaints about any controls or anything.  Although my wife did mention she got motion sick watching me play it.  :uhrr:

Lost a lot of it's charm after playing through story mode once and doing a few time trial runs, but for $5 it was well worth it.

Steam needs to upgrade their servers if they are going to be doing deals like this so often. Bought Witcher yesterday and after almost 24 hours solid of downloading I'm still 4 gigs away @ ~100KB/s

That or Steam should work it so you download the game sequentially and play the first bits while the rest downloads in the back, like the WoW trial. Because as it is I have downloaded over a Gig of making of videos in Polish that I, frankly, could do without. Gimmah Mah GAME Already!

Does the steam version of Stalker: Clear Sky have the AIDS Starforce?

TAGES
It says it on Steam.

OK next question. Is it fucked up like Starforce, or is it relatively benign like SecuROM?

I did a quick bit of reading via google, and I can't really tell.

Well, what a time to be fucking broke. I own most of what I'd want out of the sale thus far, but there are a few tempting morsels, like the second Stalker. The page for Clear Sky sez:

Quote
Oops, this is embarrassing. Due to high demand we have temporarily run out of unique keys for this title. You may, by all means, purchase at the awesome sale price but may not be able to play until we receive more unique product keys. It shouldn't take too long, we have sent armed guards to the publisher's house to get them out of bed, drive them to their secret lair and produce more keys.
I know y'all be hatin', but ChampO for $10 is also temptating. Riddick and the first ArmA for $7.

Dernit.

I'm broke until payday, but a buddy got me Stalker: Shadow over Chernobyl for Christmas. I started playing it tonight. Is that headbob thing supposed to be a feature? It actually kind of makes my eyes cross. The gameplay seems good other than that. I plan on hitting a few of the cheaper bits of this sale when payday rolls around. There's a lot of tempting shit in there. Both Freedom Force's for less than $6? The Witcher?

PC Version has better graphics if your computer can run it, and AFAIK something like a video editor and bigger multiplayer. No DLC (I think).

I have a profound love/hate relationship with Stalker. I really want to like it, and everytime I start having fun I either get lost by wandering around for ages in the wilderness or one-shotted by something I haven't seen coming, and we're back at start.

New, 24-hour promotion for today (December 24th):

ID Superpack - 66.99 € 23.79
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter 19.99  € 9.99
Need For Speed: Shift 49.99 €37.49
Left 4 Dead 2 37.99 €25.45
Football Manager 2010 49.99 €37.49

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter $9.99
Need For Speed: Shift $37.49
Left 4 Dead 2 $33.49
Football Manager 2010 $29.99

I noticed the other day that none of the id stuff was on sale, and was thinking that maybe it was because they were planning on doing it as part of a one day sale.  Using that same logic, I predict that there's going to be an Interplay sale at some point since none of their games are on sale yet either.

Today's sale is kind of meh though, at least compared to yesterday's. The "current" games are available at similar or lower prices from Amazon & Co. ID superpack is cool but I played Doom in 1994 and Hexen back then too, srsly. Dunno about Serious Sam HD.

Yeah, I played Doom, Hexen, Heretic & C. back in the day so while it is tempting to have them sit in a safe Steam corner, there is just too much stuff to play with nowadays.

On the other hand, I would like to see a BIG discount on the Popcap games package  :drill:

There is a mod called Oblivion Lost 2009 updates the graphics and tons of other stuff. Should download it before playing too much and give it a try, improves the game greatly. There is a "headbob" toggle but im not sure if its mod specific (Couldn't stand unmoded version).

So far I've picked up a few games I already own, Indigo Prophecy, Jade Empire, and Deus Ex: GOTY, just for the convenience of having them on Steam.

As far as stuff I haven't played before, I got Medieval II: Total War, Rome: Total War Gold, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, Mirror's Edge, and Company of Heroes.  With having purchased Torchlight recently also, I think I'm fairly well stocked up on stuff to keep me busy in what little downtime there is between big releases next year.

When I get some time, I kinda want to play through a few hours of each and churn out some BiiF's.

In Australia as well. Football manager on "special" for 52.49US. Thankfully I don't understand sport games and sport management games are even further away.

Fairly average games today. And the ID pack is a testament to how they've fallen.

Battle Field 2 - Complete Collection: $7.49

I'm never too sure if I like it  or not  :oh_i_see: Turn-based combat is something I haven't done before and some of the battles are drawn out, but I keep going back to it as a diversion. Graphically it's nice in a Warcraft III sort of way but not  as impressive as Torchlight. I paid 20 bucks for it so yeah, I guess 9 is worth it just to see if it floats your boat. Don't buy it if you are expecting Diablo II.

It's not easy but doable, you would have to route your internet over a US proxy for purchasing because the Steam client itself enforces the regional restrictions. AFAIK it works and you can buy stuff in US funds, but it is pretty much a gray area as it constitutes a violation of the Steam ToS. If anyone remembers the upheaval about thai/russian Orange Boxes that were disabled for the rest of the world on Steam a few years ago, that was about something similar.

About today's sale: King's Bounty is pretty cool and I think AP is well worth the money, Red Faction: Guerilla is a decent sandboxy shooter.

It's dreadful IMO. You get to see such a tiny section of the map and that doesn't work well when one side has huge lumbering behemoths where each unit actually extends off it. The idea of having very different mechanics for each side is great but the reason starcraft got respect for doing that is because it was still balanced. This doesn't even seem to come close.

Prey isn't bad (just really bland), although I think it's been on sale for pretty cheap a million times before.

I've actually heard a lot of really good things about Killing Floor (the multiplayer anyway).  It's obviously a bit lower budget than the L4D games, but it's supposedly pretty fun.  I'm contemplating a purchase.

Obviously everybody already has Orange Box.

Prey's good, but if you're on a high resolution monitor you'll have to do some ini tweaks to get the resolution right.

WTF?  It SOLD OUT?  Like, they ran out of machines to copy the fucking bits to a new image?  The enter key refused to complete the copy command?

I can't wait until the new rights utopia emerges and the copyright overlords crumble, even if it means every creative thing made afterward sucks, because it means I'll never again have to learn that a digital copy of information SOLD OUT.

Also, I already own Bioshock and wanted Prey.

Hello, BioShock - or game #11 bought during the Holiday Sale period.

Just guessing, but could it be that Steam get a limited amount of "keys" from developers for the games that are on sale, and it's because those keys run out that the offers are no longer available?

I read something recently about them selling keys, or running out of keys to something. Must be along those lines?

Our sale on Prey was so popular we ran out of keys!! If we can get more, we'll try to bring this deal back. In the meantime, 2K Games has added BioShock to the set of daily deals on Steam, at 75% OFF today only. Happy holidays!

Just gave in and bought Killing Floor. It's always looked interesting to me, I wanted to doanload a demo, which they don't have, and I was out of bandwidth to DL the thing when they had that free weekend. I'll have a muck around with it later after I've downloaded it and decide if I want to add it to my wife's and lan-accounts.

Dudes.  I know the putative reason.  They did the same thing a few days ago.  A key is a #.  They aren't hard to make.  Just because you're accustomed to the argument doesn't mean there's any logic or reason to the notion that they can't take my money for their game because they ran out of random numbers.

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale

I'm sure they have a backup for every game if keys run out. In this case, it was Bioshock for any 2K game. When they get more keys, they'll bring them back. No company gives another company the ability to make keys though. That'd be stupid of the highest order.

Burnout Paradise is a fun game. Been missing a racer since I've been console-free, and don't like to drop a lot on them because they're diversionary, I don't really get too deep into them. But I like smashy arcady driving and car collecting, even if this isn't quite on the level of Mafia's garage of badass stolen cars. Just what I needed after vegging out with FFH2.

Valve is not the publisher of Prey -- 2K Games is. It's not their fault 2K didn't give them enough keys to meet demand. If Valve "sold out" of one of their games, like say the Orange Box, on Steam that would be worthy of ridicule.

I know I'm not a statistically valid sample size, but these past couple sales I've definitely shown Valve right when they said that peole would buy well more than four times as many games if games charged a fourth of what they do. I usually don't pick up older games, unless they're generally regarded as classics, but I've jumped on a whole bunch of these <10$ sales they've had the past couple months.

I bought Ghostbusters for $6 and quickly found out that it is apparently a buggy POS on the PC that is nearly unplayable. Go me!

Odd. I encountered maybe two noticeable bugs thru the whole game.

I can't even play the game to be honest. I get to a part in the opening cutscene where a woman runs toward a musuem guard and the game just freezes. Checking the Steam and Atari forums lots of people have various problems with Ghostbusters on the PC including crashes during the opening cutscene. There are all kinds of crazy fixes that people recommend but none of them worked for me. I just got "lucky" I guess. Oh well, I got lucky. Considering this and the recent slowdown in DA:O is my only gaming problem in probably 20+ computer games over the last year or so I'll call it even.

Company of Heroes : Tales of Valor. 75% off.
Stormrise. 75% off.
King Arther - The role-playing wargame. 50% off.
Jade Empire - Special edition. 75% off.
Mr. Robot. 80% off.

They seem to be digging fairly deep in the dusty old cupboards.

King Arthur - $19.99
CoH: Tales of Valor $7.50

Jade Empire - $3.75
Silent Hill Homecoming - $10

I'm real tempted to jump on the King Arthur title.

For $4 I bought it because, well fuck it.  Silent Hill not needed I just bought Dead Space (it is fucking awesome, what a great great idea with the menu/inv/map system) so I'm good on my horror game fix.  I may by Cthulhu on the 2nd as well if its on sale.

King Arthur temps me but not for $20 since there are other things I'd rather get for $20 and I came here wondering wtf was up with Stormrise.  I watched some YT and it looks cool visually but the comments are all over the place seems to have inspired a ton of hate.

A horribly botched opportunity to do something different than their usual Judeo-Christian "absolute good vs. absolute evil" decision choices. They pretend that their "Open Palm"/"Closed Fist" system is different but they lie. Oh and the combat sucked too. But otherwise it's a decent RPG. :awesome_for_real:

I haven't been able to figure it out yet, there seems to be a ton of debate about what platform it works on.  The pc people seem to say the controls blow and the console people say its fps sucked or something.  It wasn't clear, probably too late for someone to buy download install and play before the sale is over at this point.

From browsing the reviews it looks like the main problem was "whip select" which was trying to be a novel answer to RTS control on a console but ends up being terrible, especially on the PC. Though it sounds like the rest of the game is overall bad too.

"Stormrise is one of those games that makes you wonder, "What were they thinking?" This real-time strategy game is, from top to bottom, misconceived, frustrating, frequently broken, and rarely fun. Developer Creative Assembly has built an entire product around a fundamentally flawed control scheme and neglected almost every important facet of the RTS genre. Embarrassingly busted pathfinding, infuriating interface problems, abysmal mission design, substandard visuals--these unpleasant elements and many others make the whole thing an unseemly mess." (gamespot, though most of them sound similar)."

A better way to put it is that more big games on the PC are console ports, and for those it applies. I've gotten plenty of smaller games and PC-native games through this neverending Steam sale, the one before this and weekday/weekend specials.

I honestly go back and forth. For awhile I was into PC games because for the most part I can reinstall old games from years ago and replay them, whereas once the console goes obsolete I may or may not get backwards compatibility. The problem is that PC games are getting more retarded with their "3 install ever" type ideas and it's driving me away from PC again. When you consider that I can just insert a disc and play on a console compared to maybe spending hours tweaking shit to play on a computer it makes me lean even more towards consoles.

King Arthur is kinda crazy. I think I like it.

It is awesome. As long as you are willing to put up with some glaring imbalance issues, you will probably enjoy it. Magic and Archers > everyone else for quite some time in the beginning, even with patch 1.03 and the weaker archers options. Archers come really cheap, too. At least magic is limited by the hero's mana. Afterwards it kinda shifts very noticeably towards heavy infantry and cavalry if the terrain is favorable, especially as you can get some magic counters for your heroes.

Also, Old Faith > Christians. And the computer sometimes cheats like crazy, building up full stacks of armies out of nowhere faster than I can kill them, at least in the latter stages of the game.

But it is a lovingly crafted game with a lot of attention to detail, and that shows.

Anybody like to Gift me King Arthur? I'd paypal the Money to the account of your choice!

Eh, I actually asked them in the old Firaxis poll to remake Colonization, I just can't summon the will to buy it, even from the bin. Just seems like a crappy Civ4 mod, maybe FFH2 has spoiled me? $10? For $5 maybe, one of the sub-$3 definitely.

Still, for $15 you can get Civ4 and BtS, which will let you play FFH2  :drill:

L4D would probably suffer from vet syndrome, newbs getting utterly decimated by people who have played way more than is healthy for a normal human. Most online fps is good for about a couple weeks until everyone figures out all the cheese.

Definitely. IMO, there is one thing that (more or less) recent games like Max Payne, Portal, Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit, Mirror's Edge have in common: they might be short or even very short, but they all can be summarized as  * pure fun*; the same, condensed fun you could experience at the arcades (if you liked them) putting a token in the machines you liked most, or with very old games on platforms like the Atari 2600/800XL or Commodore 64.

If that is anything like Master of Magic then I love you.
The mod is very very awesome.  The main reason to buy Civ 4.  I loved Civ 4, but loved that mod 3 times as much.

I guess I am the only one who thought FFH was actually pretty lame. I much, much prefer the vanilla game.

The stolen artwork, names, and misspelled scenario text really bothered the shit out of me. Also, that dude's D&D campaign setting is just not that good.  :oh_i_see:

Like a dumbass, i purchased a physical copy of Civ4 Gold Ed at Best Buy while replacing a broken network cable. I see that the BtS expansion on Steam requires that I have Civ4 on Steam. Since the complete pack is under $15, is it worth the grand total of $35 to be able to play FFH?

Dang missed the King Arthur sale - hopefully it comes back around. With 2 X360 RPGs, I think I now have approx 9 "new" games to play.

Hm. Welp, it's $15 for BtS at Amazon and that's the cheapest I see. Imo, BtS made Civ4 a better game by itself. Since I got turned onto FFH2, I've played one game of vanilla Civ: right after I bought BtS.

I'm also a huge FFH2 fan, it's quirky and unbalanced but so much fun. My first game was also Lanun (naval civ, city names like Innsmouth and Aylesbury) with the Octopus Overlords religion...hooked since. The game I'm playing right now is Luchuirp, one of the two dwarf civs, with golem units upgraded with stealth and fireballs (worker units with fireballs!). End game you can summon the angel or demon civs and play as them, one civ is all about bringing down hell on earth, there is an armageddon counter that increments with certain actions and events, hell terrain starts showing up, horses turn into nightmares, etc. Units that level up, adepts to mages to archmages, different schools of magic with three tiers of spells from buffs to summons.

Sucks you can't put the Steam expansion on the boxed game. I've gotten more than my money's worth out of the price of launch day civ4 + BtS, but I'm biased. Have I mentioned I'm biased?

Same.  I much prefer regular old Civ.  I have no patience for trying to determine whether the Altar of Chlkjkutz'bala is better or worse than the Doorway of Gankoriz.  I know a tank is better than a spearman.

I'll give you that, there is a learning curve to it. Each civ is pretty much built for a limited set of strategies. You can do pretty much anything, but if you stick within their strengths, you'll do much better. I still don't know all the quirks, I try to play as a different civ every time and learn them, there's just a ton of civs and each one has its own twist. I see that as a good thing. Like with Luchuirp, once you figure out what to tech to get the upgrades for their golems, you kick yourself for building so many golems before they can be built with fireball upgrades  :drill:

I guess it's like the X3 thing, I've chosen FFH2/Civ4 as the game I've delved into and learned and keep going back to.

CoD5 is incredibly mediocre. INCREDIBLY MEDIOCRE.

Like, instead of shooting for the moon and barely making it to the stratosphere (Infinity Ward), they shot to the roof of their office and never made it past the desks.

QFT, I'm so sorry I bought the game at all. On 360 at that. CoD4 was better in every way imaginable, except that Dogs are less cheesy than choppers.

Well I made the comment in an earlier thread after seeing videos about the game that I hoped magic wouldn't be completely overpowered, but I expected it would be given how difficult it would be to balance.

After playing it, magic is overpowered. And yes, the computer seems to be cheating at times harder than Bill Belichick with a handycam.

Great. Civ IV doubled in price. For some reason, apparently on Steam's end (according to my bank), my card was declined to purchase it. Do they cockblock you from making multiple purchases in the same day?

Might have been trouble with their service in the rush yesterday.  When I went to make my purchase, it didn't go through, and I got an e-mail from steam saying my card was declined for an unknown reason.  I promptly went back in and tried to buy them again, and it worked fine (I was also buying the Civ4 pack).

Shattered Horizon really excited me until I learned it had no bot support whatsoever -- no co-op, no single-player practice mode.

Nothing repulses me from a game like having to learn how to play it in front of an audience of anonymous internet assholes telling me how much I suck.

This steam sale is really just highlighting how if you already have stuff to play, there's almost no point in buying PC games on release anymore. The only exception would be things you nedd to play NOW. And there's very little that can't wait 6 months to a year.

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale
Post by: Kageru on January 01, 2010, 10:17:59 PM

That's the frugal way to do it, yes. Though even then there are games that do hold their value, or at least don't get discounted, for a long time so it's a toss up. However I think the number of people who will shop that way are convincingly outnumbered by the "must have it now!" or the couldn't be stuffed waiting crowd.

I mean after all, logically, pre-orders make no sense at all. Paying money for a game that isn't known to be good and hasn't even been released makes no sense. But they still sell them.

It's not even really that you're evil, you're just a colossal asshole that really loves to solve all issues with DEATH.  It was pretty easy for me, and I tend to have problems playing the bad guy.

I bought it on the PC just so I could play ME2 properly on the PC (2 completions on the 360 as well).   Well, unless it comes out the that PC version is a bad port or would run really poorly on my machine.   I'd just like to avoid turning on my 360.

Here we go, not stating prices since I doubt most of you are in the UK.

Trine
Morrowind GOTY
Painkiller Complete Pack
Red Alert 3
CS: Source

75% off everything apart from RA3, which is 66%.

I'm going to assume that buying Eve online (in a moment of weakness and curiosity) is not connected with activating it. So it can sit in my not installed pile until I've exhausted fallen earth.

Also threw in audio-surf and osmos with mass effect. Audio surf is half toy and half game but works really well. Osmos i'm not so sure about.

So currently thats fallen earth, torchlight, bioshock, mass effect, STALKER:clear sky and eve all sitting in the waiting pile. That will probably take me most of the year given I'm still playing wow and it has an upcoming expansion.   steam.

Some temptation to buy CS:Source, but I suspect it's full of people far too good at it. Not sure I have the time to be competitive. Loved playing original CS though.

There's some huge note on the purchase page that if you run with UAC enabled, you need to run all of steam as admin, or some shit. I picked it up and it's running happily on Win7, but I was wondering why I kept seeing you start/stop playing it over and over.

I will say the Mako's controls are far worse on the PC than xbox. Which I didn't think was humanly possible.

I found that when I upgraded my machine in the middle of last year and put ME back on it that it ran like complete and utter shit (as in taking ~6 minutes to merely get to the 'Press Any Key' bit to reach the main menu) and resolved it by closing out a Power DVD process that tended to start everytime I booted into windows. I got the jedi knight collection for $10. That's a steal. 5 games, 3 of which are really fun. Playing the force unleashed (thank god I didn't buy it) just made me want the better, older games, and steam did not disappoint.

Also, torchlight for $5, because damn.

Sorting the "$10 or less" by metacritic score shows me about 20 games that I'd buy if I hadn't already played and enjoyed them. I hope they do a sale like this every year.

In the WTF category, Doom 2 is $10.

How good is the GTA port to pc? It may not be the best game but I'm thinking $7.50 is too good a price to pass up.

You better have the horsepower, and patience to sign up to all kinds of shit in order to play.

I liked it. Not quite as good as the last one, lacks a little character. Learn how to turn off your cell phone ringer and it's a fun game.

My computer is three years old and it runs great. Don't expect to max the sliders, look up the console defaults and start there, bump them up a little until performance suffers. Game looks good, runs fast. I used a 360 controller to play it.

See, I actually liked it more than San Andreas.  I think its a bit truer to GTA 3 or Vice City.   People do call your cell phone in game to do stuff all the time, but I just ignored most of it and only did that quests I wanted to, no big deal to be honest, I think too much fuss is made about that.  Less RPG elements, more driving around and shooting stuff (than San Andreas).

Also, Free for All multiplayer is shenanigans fun.

I bought it when it was on a lesser sale at some point and feel it was worth my money.

It's fun for a short while then gets boring very fast, at least it did for me.  Accept my friend invite on Steam and I may join you for a few games though, I haven't played it for a while.

I'm already bored of Torchlight, heh.

Yes!  I'm not the only one!  I played through it quickly (on very hard), had no problem and as a whole found it boring.

Now I just need to figure out what games I want to buy today before the sale ends...without going broke.  :ye_gods:   Bhodi's post sold me on X3, never played Bioshock..hmm..

Is the Witcher and Chronicles of Riddick worth picking up? I  keep going to buy them and then stop myself for some reason.

The Witcher is the best use of a Bioware Engine since Planescape.

Riddick is just fantastic.

Too many great deals. I ended up picking up Machinarium, Trine, Star Wars: KOTOR, Trine, BioShock, Killing Floor, STALKER.

Kinda want to go back for more.

If you liked Zombie Panic then you'll probably love this game, as its essentially just surviving against waves of Zombies Infected Specimens.

I've played it since saying that. Zombie Panic and Zombie Survival are two different things. I like the latter.

Oh - I didn't see the Max Payne series come up - unless they are unavailable to Australia.

My list looks pretty similar to yours otherwise - plus I'm still hedging over getting Witcher.

I went pretty light.  Picked up X3:TC and Majesty 2.  Not sure I'll like X3, but w/e.  I've blown $10 on worse.

I did, however, enjoy the Majesty 2 demo and gladly put $15 towards that.

My list:
Dead Space
STALKER
Borderlands DLC x2 (1 gift)
Torchlight x3 (all gifts)
Jade Empire
Deus Ex GOTY
Civ4 pack (gift)
Zombie Driver
Max Payne 1 & 2

Thats probably almost as many video games as I bought in the last 3 years put together.  Did they have a sale like this last year because I totally missed it.

I used to have a mental slice of my budget called "Mass Effect 2".  It's sort of not there anymore... and I don't really mind.  (In some part because my PC playthrough of the first game is so far down the list now that I don't think I'll have finished it by the end of the month.)

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale

My list:

Torchlight
Mirror's Edge
Trine
Stalker:SoC
X3: Terran Conflict
Crysis Maximum Edition
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

DAMN  :drill:

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale

I picked up

LucasArts Pack (bad choice imo, should've just waited for monkey island and JK series to go on sale separately)
STALKER
Torchlight
King Arthur
Jade Empire

I was going to buy Trine when it was on sale, but the steam checkout interface decided to crap out on me and it wouldn't accept my CC (even though I used it 2 days ago without problems, and other games/services didn't have a problem with it). Oh well.

King Arthur: the Roleplaying Wargame
Mass Effect
Mirror's Edge

They are. I'm not sure why, though since they were never controversial or banned or censoed or anything. The other GTAs (3, VC, SA) are also missing for us.

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale

The Witcher
Armored Princess
Arx Fatalis
Indigo Prophecy
Eidos Collector Pack
The Longest Journey + Dreamfall
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Civilization IV
Crysis Complete pack
Trine
Stalker

Now if I only had time to play (/replay) any of those.

Torchlight
Sam and Max complete
GTA IV
Trine

I feel that was well worth $35

I got the Eidos Pack plus about 15 more, so that's a big list.

It's to the point where I need Steam to have two lists of uninstalled games.  One for games I'll probably never install again (old Steam pack stuff) and one for games I haven't installed yet, but plan to.

I agree completely.  Just being able to arbitrarily create folders in the games list would be pretty handy.

If you just need a "Get to Later List", you can put those games as Favorites (Right-Click on Game -> Add to my favorites) and just collapse the header when you aren't looking for something new to play.

For proper folders though, you're SOL at this point.

While I didn't see all the daily deals (vacation, internet access was a crapshoot), I found I'd already bought everything I found interesting in the sales. I only nabbed Vanguard for $5. I've been curious about it for the last year, and the price point was hard to argue.

It was an exciting sale, but I am glad it's over. I held out on my ever growing list until this morning (except for daily deals), when vacation was over and I was back at work. Reality set in and I severely cut the list. Ended up with the following, doubles on some for the wife:

Torchlight
The Void
Indigo Prophecy
Dragon Age (to legalize the wife)
2x HoMM 5: TotE
2x Defense Grid: The Awakening
FarCry 2
Alpha Prime
Trine

Got away cheap but still spent a little more on this year's sale than I did on Jan 1 '09.

Picked up:

Batman AA
SF IV
Crysis
Jade Empire
Max Payne pack

and a couple other < $5 deals. Missed out on Prey and Mirror's Edge, hopefully they'll be available next season.

Also picked up the THQ pack for $50, which was a good deal since I hadn't played a lot of the games, including:

CoH's
Red Faction's
Dawn of War's
Saints Row 2

Steam is really making my general disinterest in purchasing Day 1's pay off.

Four RPGs (Mass Effect, Torchlight, Witcher, Indigo)
A third copy of EVE
Two hybrid shooters (STALKER, Bioshock)
And a console port in a pear tree (Mirrors edge)

Title: Re: Early Holiday Sale

Killing Floor (x4) with Defence Alliance, WTF that is.
Plants vs Zombies (I think, unless it was just before the sale)
Torchlight
Evil Genius (despite having it on disc)
Freedom Force
Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich
King's Bounty: Armoured Princess
Zeno Clash
Riddick: Athena Pack (gonna wait till I'm actually going to play it to install, due to bullshit DRM)
Mass Effect
Stalker: Clear Sky (gonna wait till I'm actually going to play it to install, due to bullshit DRM)

I got more in the pre-sale. Steam has been crazy, I can't remember when I got a lot of the other shit. Maybe one day I'll play some of these things..
