The Accident TunnelThis tunnel in Russia is the longest in-city tunnel of Europe. There is a river running over it, and water leaks at some points. When the temperature reaches -38 degrees, like it did this winter, the road freezes and the result is the attached video taken during a single day with the tunnel camera. Congratulations to the dual bus driver... This is better than turn 4 at Daytona!

Not much you can do on ice if you lose it, but the dual bus driver shows how it is possible to regain control after the ice patch. So many people have shitty winter driving skills, despite living their entire lives in wintery areas. My current truck is garbage and I only use it to commute a few blocks to work in the winter, but with every other vehicle I've had, I spend a few hours each year in empty parking lots practicing my winter skills. Throw yourself out of control and work on regaining it, do suicide turns, etc. Fun stuff, too, and it's saved my life many times over.

The key is NOT braking. With my current car, especially with the condition that the suspension is in currently (read: shitty), it's beyond easy to slip in the wet....but it's easy to regain traction by just letting up off of the gas, and NOT braking. Also, empty parking lots can be fun.  |
