I don't know about the Mythbusters. I don't know why they'd lie about the jetpack, that's probably true, but I've personally witnessed one of their so-called "busted myths" work. It was the "pop a penny in your mouth to pass a breathalyzer test" one. I and two of my friends were underaged, and they were drinking. I didn't (still don't) drink, so I was the driver. They both started at the same time, and both had similar quantities to drink.
As I was driving the first one home at like... 4am, we get pulled over. Cop breathalyzes me, sees I haven't been drinking and basically tells me that I'm off the hook because he doesn't really care that we're underaged, just as long as we're not driving drunk. He elects to test my friends as well, though, to.... y'know, I don't know why he did it. To scare them a bit or something, I guess. Make 'em smarter about the drinking thing.
Anyways. Tests the first one, DING DING DING woah, lots of alcohol there. Tests the second one.... "Huh, how many drinks did you say you had?" "Just a couple, sir." (bullshit) "And it was earlier today?" "Yes sir, around 5 or 6pm." (bullshit) "Well, I'm not showing any alcohol on your breath. Must've passed through your system already." "Oh, that's weird."
Cop walks away to attend to the first friend, who was belligerently drunk and managed to piss the cop off, get himself handcuffed, and got tossed in the back of the cop car. I turn to the other friend, "What the fuck was that?" He explains the penny "myth" to me (I'd never heard it before), said he remembered it just as he noticed a penny in his pocket, and he slipped it into his mouth as the cop was taking the first friend back to the cop car.
Now, he IS Irish (like... born and raised in Ireland... not 'my great grandma is Irish so I'm Irish'). So there's some of that alcohol accounted for. But there's no way he should've had a 0 reading. I was there the whole time, he was quite drunk. He just had more experience than friend #1 so he was able to keep his cool much more easily.
So... the penny thing either works or my friend has the most amazing metabolism known to man.

That's got to have been 3 or 4 guys getting drunk around a TV on a weekend, and one guy bet another that he couldn't say "porno" on TV X number of times. |
