Why a person wouldn't use a pseudonym for Twitter is beyond me. Pseudonyms free people so they may speak their minds, provided it is not known who their employer is. If it is not known who their employer is, it is highly unlikely to hurt the employer, and hence for the employer to hurt the employee.

This.  I don't even use Twitter any more, but I have two Twitter accounts, one for real me and one for work me.  Everyone I know who has a significant work/celebrity persona has two Facebook accounts (their real name one is the work persona so they can accept friend requests from people they don't know so as to appear polite, and the fake name one is the one they actually use).

This guy failed on so many levels it's amazing.  You shouldn't talk smack about competitors in a public forum, and you especially shouldn't do it under your real name, and you ESPECIALLY shouldn't do it under your real name while also talking about your company's business strategy.

I don't understand why people are up in arms saying this guy should be able to say whatever he wants. If I identified myself as being a part of my organization on Twitter and posted something about how much one of our competitors sucked and my company found out, I would be disciplined. Maybe not fired, but I would get a talking to. My company's leadership recently sent out guidelines on how to conduct yourself in social media. I work for a $100 million wholesale printing supply company, not a $1 billion high profile gaming company.

In other news, Nintendo is saying "where's mine" to you tube let's players who make money off their feeds.
http://ca.ign.com/videos/2013/05/16/nintendo-enforces-copyright-on-youtube-lets-plays41

That's fairly common. If you make a fan video using copyrighted images or music, the copyright owner may contact YouTube and, instead of asking for the video to be removed, instead ask for some advertising to be added to it, with the copyright owner (not me the copyright-abusing fan) keeping the revenue.

The music industry has been doing this for ages and I guess Nintendo owns the images and sounds contained within their games just as much as a record company owns their music.

It's better than simply having the video removed, as bastards Fox did to my carefully crafted Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan videos.

It's also very dumb on nintendo's part. I have purchased several games from watching a bit of let's play on youtube to get a feel for it.  It's like companies don't realize the free publicity they are getting from this.

I don't think the gaming industry is noted for it's professionalism, so the general lack of understanding in this area might be fairly common.

Not all publicity is good publicity, though, especially these days.  If some jackass makes your game look stupid or incomprehensible because they skipped through the tutorial, switched off the "annoying" help text, didn't read the manual, and died at the first point the game inched away from being completely generic, that might hurt sales.  Youtube is full of dumbasses playing games they don't understand so they can scream obscenities while dying repeatedly because over the top antics bring the views, I'm not going to start crying because the owner of the material they're shitting on decided to tell them to knock it the fuck off.

And there's also the issue that as games are getting more cinematic and less interesting from a gameplay point of view, more people are viewing Youtube videos instead of playing the games themselves.  If your game is more of a cinematic experience than an actual "game" game then you're probably going to get a bit worked up about the entire thing being shown from start to finish on Youtube just like the creators of an actual cinematic experience would.

Or how many people are confused and think this particular comment is worthy of any attention at all, regardless of who the guy works for.

I agree in principle that there are things you can say that should get you fired or reprimanded. I can't agree that this is one of them.

I'm so glad I don't make youtube videos, because this is becoming my playing style more and more lately. Oh, and turning off sound. What have I become!?!

Me?  I don't understand.

To add some content, I'm not really a fan of consoles, we have a Wii, the Mrs forces me to play Mario Kart long after I got bored with it.  My 6 year old gets some use out of it but we have resisted getting her involved too much with technology as one of my nephews plays way too much on consoles.

As for the guy, you shouldn't say stupid stuff that affects your employment, especially if it's true.
