STO has no real equivalent to SWTOR's storyline.  Voice acting is few and far between, and there are very few multi-mission plots.  The closest they come is the Romulan stuff.

There are a few story arcs over a handful of missions here and there, and many missions do a good job mining nuggets from stories from several series and merging them into a single narrative.

Still, the Romulan arc is pretty fun, and the klingon storyline is fun if you like watching Klingons being played like idiots by the fed intelligence services (like I do!)

The feds don't really have a story as such.

So sounds like I should start two chars, one romulan fed one romulan Klingon, and then I'm good to go on experiencing all story content?

What's the difference between Straight Klingon vs Romulan Klingon? (Also, is there a big difference between the Rom Fed and Rom Klingon story content?)

Fed Romulans had some missions from the Fed side sprinkled through their lines to introduce things like the Black Ops guy and get you to DS9 and the Ferengi outpost. You did similar but not exactly the same stories for those guys.

I imagine the Klingon Roms do the same thing.

Ah, okay -- and the reason I'm not missing anything if I don't play straight Fed is that the Feds are so lacking in real storyline?

Romulan Fed for the Romulan and Fed story lines, as the early Fed storyline is weak sauce.

Straight Klink because you already got the Romulan story with your Rom Fed and then you get to go to Klink hell with your new Klingon.

Yeah, though to be Honest I'd probably switch it up to Rom Klink and then Fed.  Everyone says how terrible the Klink side is that I've never tried it.  The Fed side was boring, because the style was pretty bland. However, at least there were chapters and you could run through them and get some sort of storyline going.

Seems that running Klink Rom at least gets you a story while going through things.

Running a Klink Rommie isn't bad at all. I ran it through and it was enjoyable enough. Basically it makes not a huge lot of difference to your Rom story, but once its over you will be getting the Klingon responses (which can get pretty wearysome if "eaagh! Warrior! Me not Gay!" isn't your thing) to various shared missions and you will be on the klingon side for PVP and for starbases, and you can only join Klingon Guilds and such.

The main problem is that the Klingon side is pretty underpopulated, so it can be hard to get good groups for specific shared content. There;s no shortage of peeps in the fed side

Speaking of which -- assuming I'm just a story/content tourist and don't really care about getting A+ gear upgrades or PvP or anything, how hard-gated is the content? Am I constantly going to be stuck on Mission XYZ until I can get a player who's really grinded out the good gear to come help me? When grouping is necessary, will I be welcome in groups if I'm undergeared but demonstrably not a moron who pulls before the tank, stands in the fire, etc.?

Content isn't gated. You hit the level and you can run the instance/ mission.

I dunno about the high-end life, but none of the LFG missions ever made me feel like I wasn't able to contribute or was useless.  There's also very little "stand in the fire" mechanics in STO, probably because it's so damn hard to maneuver.

I understand there IS a high-end raiding component, but I never perceived it to be a big chunk of players like it is with WoW and other traditional games.  You'd get the occasional guy who'd come in to a mission and be able to WTFPWN all the spawns himself. You'd marvel at how the fuck that happens, but that was about it. Nobody yelled at me for being a noob who couldn't solo tank half the spawns.

Grouping was always fine. In some of them Klingons can group it with Feds. I always found if a guy was up front said that they were new everyone was always helpful in telling then what to do, even if it was "just follow me and don't go in front of me, and you will be fine. And don't forget to keep pressing the anti-borg adaption thingie."

People tend to appreciate it when people said they were new in my experience.

Yeah, pretty much the only way to fuck up an STF is to not participate at all.

Not true at all. It is quite easy to fuck up the Bonus Objectives if you don't know what you're doing and people will sometimes quit an STF if that happens.

Seems the good folks over at Cryptic are paying tribute to Nimoy by erecting Spock statues on Vulcan and New Romulus. Nice touch there.

The only good thing to come out of losing Nimoy is it finally caused Cryptic to launch a crackdown on a fleet called Starfleet Dental which is basically a little group of sociopaths that specialize in griefing others, especially RPers. They were griefing players who showed up on Vulcan to mourn Nimoy and Cryptic started handing out bans left and right.

Yeah. Cryptic wouldn't do anything about them for a long time but them trolling the Nimoy memorial finally crossed a line and rumor is their recruiting thread on the forums was closed and tons of bans and/or suspensions were handed out.

Um, no?  Nobody in SFD has received any kind of ban whatsoever, any information to that effect is just plain wrong.  The only activity that I've received word of is that Zombie Spock and Ghost Spock got renamed.  But fear not, the goons are being driven out by how bad the game's become and the generally downward direction of recent devolvings into a Korean grindfest cash shop game.  You know the writing's really on the wall for a game when it gets so bad that the goons bail on it.

I was trolling some goons about SF Dental a couple of days ago on twitch. they seem... a little sensitive about the topic.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I guess you can be goons and be sociopaths as pong as you don't invite massive blowback...  Ohhhhh, I see.

The game's fine. If anything Dental is just getting bored as it is harder to grief RPers now and like the little sociopaths they are, once they run out of victims they move on.

It's honestly not.  At the Spock memorial, people were completely losing their shit over other people:

  • Not being in uniform.
  • Not standing in a proper row with the other people.
  • Talking

When the bar's set that low, it's pretty much impossible not to be able to grief others.  You don't even have to be a Dental for that.

Basically Dental showed up and acting like Westboro Baptist church. Most people who had ever encountered Dental weren't shocked at all. Sociopaths don't change and are incapable of understanding emotions after all.

That wasn't Dental, that was everybody.  Anyone performing the high crimes of not being in uniform or not being perfectly lined up with the other people at the statue was subject to a torrent of tears.  Dentals got the tear torrent just from being anywhere in the vicinity regardless of anything they were doing, they didn't even have to lift a finger.  Plenty of them did anyways, because Dental, but the STO thread on the something awful forums has plenty of chatlogs from the event of random hysterical players threatening their lives, calling the FBI, etc.  Which also pretty much played right into the Dentals' hands; they didn't get banned, but the people who messaged them death threats or bizarre racist rants got reported for violating the game's rules and did get punished.
