Holy shit. My major beef with this game was my beloved faction not being playable. This has my attention now.

I'm definitely going to play far enough down the Romulan line to get a D'deridex, but not sure how much I'll actually play it when I get it.  The things are like four times the volume of a Galaxy class, so odds are good that they'll steer like a yak.  I've been spoiled by the relative fleetness of my Vesta and really don't think I could stand to fly something with a crap turn rate at this point.

Fucking tell me about it. I'm flying either a Defiant retrofit or a Wells Class. If it doesn't turn on a goddamn dime, I'm a pissy bitch. We'll see.

Heh. I get aggravated by shuttle missions because they turn so much faster than my stock Deep Space Science Vessel.

Oh my stars and garters...

I think I'll step away from the game for a bit becasue I have largely lost interest (plus there's some minor drama associated with the fleet I'm on that has soured me) and I want lots of built up enthusiasm to PLAY THE UTTER SHIT OUT OF THE ROMULANS!!! I wonder which characters I can blow the brains out of on my roster to make room..

So, a question to you STO vets.

Is there any reason for me to bump the difficulty on missions up at all?  Increased rewards/ better rewards, etc?  I'll be hitting level 49 today, possibly 50 (hooray for duty missions giving xp.) and my ship gear is such that I get my ass beat on the "no wounds/ ship damage on death" setting as it is.  If I bump this up will I see better rewards or is it just pointless tedium of extra HPs for the e-peen crowd?

There's more and better drop loot from defeated enemies - I'm not sure about XP rewards.

If you're having trouble at Normal, I don't consider the rewards at Advanced to be sufficient to offset the added costs. I've never even bothered to try the rank above that.

The difficulty slider is purely for epeen measurement, or if you want a 'challenge.'  The loot tables are technically better, but we're talking the difference between 1/100 chance of a purple, as opposed to 0.5/100.  Better odds, but still not good ones.  The longer battle times also pretty much negate the loot chance advantage, as you could blow up twice as many ships in the time it took you to knock out one on elite.

If you feel you are hurting gear-wise, Merusk, hit me up in game @Rishathra.  I have bunches and bunches of good equipment I can give you.

Thanks, you guys confirmed what I suspected.  I turned it up one mission ago and as the piddly Romulan frigates were chewing my shields to bits I was thinking, "Sweet, I bet I get some good drops instead of white shit now!"

...And then wound up with 0 drops, 0 drops, white console.  Ohhhhh, I see.

My gear's good enough for leveling.  When I say that I get my ass kicked it's only those Romulan cruisers around the time you go to the "Vault" in the mission storyline.  They've got some sort of power or shield drain that just fucks me right over.  I figure I'm missing a resist somewhere and won't really care about it until I cap and consider grinding for glory or just continuing the mission stories since I know they'll give me blues.

Really I know my problem is I've got stock parts on my last 2 ships because Green and blue drops are infrequent and you level past their usefulness PDQ.  The Dilithium gear is too expensive to bother with as you level and exchange prices are so inflated as to be *laughable*.   Like every other Gear-MMO where you come in 2-4 years later.  why so serious?

There are some other avenues to good equipment:

If you're flush with cash, the exchange. Personally, I find the prices severely inflated (PRE-EDIT: Seems you agree), but I seem to be unusual in rarely having more than 500k EC.

If you're flush with sensor traces, craft it. You'll need dilithium for "unreplicatable materials."

If you're flush with officers, you can Engineering missions to build deflectors, shields, and most types of weapon.

How to get mad credz in STO:
1) Klingon alt
2) Do tutorial mission and a Mirror Invasion or two.
3) Get Doffs
4) Go maraud.
5a) Exchange contraband for dilitihum, or
5b) Sell contraband on the AH for credits.
6) Never worry about money again.

The two easiest ways to get money/gear in this game.

1.) Make a Klingon alt.  Go marauding.  Sell the piles contraband you get.

2.) Ask me for stuff.  I'm rich.

There's other ways for the feds to earn cash

(1) Grind Starbase 24. Its better for an escort as you have a shot at the big prize but there is good loot to be had regardless.

(2) the big dig is a lot of fun and has good money in there too.

Thing is, though, a klink maurading is 10-15 minutes a day and then free money.

It fluctuates, but if you put it up for 45000, it will all sell within the week.

The new Romulan stuff has gotten me interested in playing again.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to link my old Cryptic account with my new Perfect World account.  I made it to captain before and there is no way in hell I'm starting over again.  Fuck.  That.  Shit.  I sent a ticket in so hopefully they can fix it.

Leveling up is soooo easy now, especially with the duty officer system.  Don't let that stop you.  I have two mule alts that are max level solely from logging in once a day and doing the history assignments at the Academy.  They were vice admiral within the month.  Fixing accounts that have trouble linking up to PW isn't exactly their first time at the rodeo, though, so it shouldn't be a problem for them to fix it for you.

Have you played around much with the warp cores or new traits, Sir T?

I've never seen a game where they have a bug that doesn't allow people to connect to their servers and they have decided its not worth fixing. I'm literally in awe of how bad these guys are.

Not as such no. I was too busy raging that my Klingon characters on tribble cant beam up and that my Atrox carrier could not fit through a door  why so serious?

The "new trait system" Is basically that you slot in a bunch of traits to available slots from a list. I looked through them and they don't seem too different to the ones we have right now. I tried to get some warp cores by blowing up some foul cardassians and none of them dropped. :(

Ok, I played around with it last night. Essentially, you now have a new slot as well as the Deflector'shield/engine combo on your ship for the warp core. On tribble warp cores are available from the dil store, which gives you up to Mk X Rare cores (for 32K dil). Warp cores determine your base warp core speed now instead of your level. Mk X gives warp 10. The blue ones have various efects, such as 15% for your shield, giving 15% of your Shield power to your auxiliary power, stuff like that. I still havent actually seem any cores drop, but someone said on TTS (the tribble channel) that all he had seen drop were commons, which just give the Warp speed and that's it.

Just about to hit level 10 and I believe I get a new ship. I am playing an Engineer.  Should I take the engineer ship?

Also, I'm reading you can send Duty Officers out on missions.  I'm guessing I cannot do that because I don't have enough of them to spare and still fly my ship?

Do you guys have a chat channel you hang out that you can answer a few questions from a total noob? My user name is rakn0r

Your duty officers and bridge officers are different things. You can assign 5 duty officers to space and ground support so that they do something instead of sending them on assignments but I'm not sure what you said makes sense.

Being forced to level to 24 to get Klingon is fucking garbage, what a stupid move. I wondered if Klingon would unlock if I bought the cat people Klingon race but there's no info and I think I will probably just stop playing instead. This is a ton better than I imagined it could be.

Uh, you can get to level 24 inside a week. And Klingon play appears to be "Honourably log onto forums to complain about the lack of Klingon content and violently object to any suggestions that they are not totally outclassed by the Feds, and they only win every freaking game because the feds are idiot players donchaknow."

And you start off at level 20 as a kling.

Raknor, for purely leveling purposes I would suggest getting an escort.  Once you hit max level go ahead and pick something else if you like.  Engineers work pretty good in just about anything, really, but the level grind (such as it is, you will level very fast) will go more smoothly in an escort.

I don't think you get duty officers until level 11, which is why you can't send them yet.

I'll send you an invite to the f13 fleet if you are interested, and you can ask questions on the fleet channel, and we can help you out with other stuff too.

As for Klingons, I think when Legacy of Romulus hits that whole level restriction thing is going away.
