I didn't see this posted, so I figured I would.

Quote
On Feb 17, 2011, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nathan Fillion said: “If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.”

The Plan:

Phase 1) Generate momentum.   We’re going to setup a way people can pledge funding towards the mission of putting the rights to Firefly back into the hands of people who care about it.  Since Nathan said he’d be game to be those hands, we’re going to watch for …

Phase 2) Nathan chimes in towards us and approves the effort.   At that point, it’s a real mission and we’ll switch into…

Phase 3) We’ll setup a way for the funding to be collected into a Non-Profit Organization.  We’ll then want everyone to make good on their pledge and contribute.

Throughout all of this, we’ll have up the running tally of pledges and actuals.

http://helpnathanbuyfirefly.com/

Pledge total as of just now: $ 614,225.00 ready to go from 7,669 Browncoats (roughly $80.09 average).

I'll put more hope into it when actual money is donated instead of just pledged.

I'll put more hope into it if/when Nathan comes out in support of this. I tend to think he said that mostly joking. If he is serious about it however...

I would throw cash at it on the chance of it.

I loved the show, but seriously, this deserves a vast thread of various Picard WTF and Facepalm pics. It was a random comment he made in an interview to indicate how much he enjoyed doing the series.

Well, duh.

But would it stay that way if people actually ponied up the money? Jose Molina and Jane Espensen seemed game.

I really liked the show, but the obsession some people have for the show is really going overboard.

Over and out.

Random aside?  Probably, but it's not like Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion don't have experience with a vaguely similar project.  (Circumstances outside the projects themselves are of course radically different, with at least Castle, V, The Avengers movie, and some new show Gina Torres is in still chugging along.)

It was better than TOS/TMP Star Trek, and people rezzed that franchise. Just sayin'.

I'm torn on this, I enjoyed Firefly but I only watched it because someone forced the dvd's on me at work and refused to take "no" for an answer.

I wouldn't mind it being resurrected, but as Tebonas says this kind of fan based initiative is textbook obsessive behaviour and deserves any ridicule that WUA decides to throw at it.

I really think you are all reading WAY too much into this. It's a quant little idea. He said something that is vaguely hinting that he would be willing, these guys setup a pledge, not an actual donation, to get an interest check, and now suddenly people interested are obsessed? What?  swamp poop

They state clearly they will only being doing this in a serious manner if he comes out and supports this. Which I'm pretty sure they know he won't.

The key isn't how much you pledge, it's getting Fox to sell the rights back.

If you can read this, you're on a board populated by misogynist assholes.

I really hope after a few million gets pledged, he comes out with a 'FOX IS SELLING THE RIGHTS!!!" statement, gets the money, and then retires on a nice island somewhere, posting weekly youtube videos of him pointing and laughing at the camera.

I'd say it's at least 10 times more likely than actually resurrecting firefly.

Think bigger.  He could sell those videos on iTunes for a dollar a pop.

Browncoats will watch ANYTHING with Nathan Fillion in it.   why so serious?

And the average pledge is around $80, or did I misunderstand that?  Because if so, then  awesome, for real

I would love a new series as much as the next fan, but I'm pretty dubious as to what this would actually achieve.

Whilst I'm sure this was a pretty innocent off the cuff statement from Nathan, other times in the past I have been a bit suspicious about the allusions Joss makes each time there is a re/release of the firefly series or movie.  Always there seems to be a 'if enough people buy this there might be another series' statement that inspires all the diehards to buy a duplicate they really don't need and of course we all know how it has worked out so far.

I'd like to point you to the Nerdist Podcast with Chriis Hardwick No. 56 (www.nerdist.com). Interview guest is Nathan Fillion and they also talk about this initiative.

The gist of it is that he doesn't want people to pledge money. He said he'd only do it if he'd win the proverbial 300 million in the lottery but he doesn't want people to spend their hard earned cash on something like that. (The California National Lottery sent him

He especially mentioned the experience of working on "Dr. Horrible's sing along blog" as the kind of work he'd like to do more often.

Perhaps if they turned the TV series into a movie first? If Firefly really is that popular, it'll be an instant hit.

I really hope after a few million gets pledged, he invests it in Star Citizen where people can buy a non-functioning Firefly class ship

Gina Torres is in Suits, Morenna Baccarin is in Gotham, Alan Tudyk is in Rogue One (not sure if that is done filming), Nathan Fillion is going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.  It ain't happening.

That big a piece of bronze showing up in Detroit would be stolen and scrapped within a week.

Don't worry, you can still get the Firefly Companion App for the IMMINENT RELEASE of the Firefly MMO.  That way, you can give them money to support development of the game which you will still have to buy separately AND get access to constant daily weekly monthly bi-monthly quarterly existing updates on the status of the project as a thank you!

This is the only Firefly thread I could find and we're not supposed to make multiple threads for the same show...

I thought Fillion had a minimal to nonexistent role in GoTG 2....
