Here we go. Mostly for Cyrrex, a week after releasing Trails of Cold Steel 3, here they are already advertising for Trails of Cold Steel 4.

Announcement trailer.

By the time I get around to that, hopefully they will be close to a PC release.

Ahh, Atari, what memories those five letters bring to all of us. A pioneristic era in the eighties, the 800Xl, the glorious ST, and other numerous things....Then the recent try with the Atari VCS, which is still in development, albeit with some delays.

AND THEN OF COURSE THE ATARI CASINO, HOW COULD I FORGET THAT?

Development times are already becoming extreme. I can't imagine this will shorten the process. It's pretty though, that's for sure.

I realized the other day that it has been almost nine years since Skyrim came out. Bethesda said recently ES6 is years away from any game details. We could be looking at fifteen years between ES games; that's wild to think about, considering they were on a 4-5 year cycle prior to this.

It might if you were already making super high polygon count assets because you no longer have to convert them down into versions that can actually be rendered cause the engine does that for you now (in theory).

Well, they'll still need to re-release Skyrim for the new consoles. That might take a few development cycles.  awesome, for real

I will probably be buying a PS5 at or around release, mostly because my PS4 vanilla edition is long in the tooth and I would probably upgrade it to a Pro if the 5 weren't coming soon.  But I have no expectiation that it is actually going to produce what we just saw up there in real world scenarios.  It'll be a miracle if it can even pull of 4k at 60hz as a standard, let alone pushing anything that looks that nice in the process.  I know they make claims of 4k, 8k, 60hz, 120hz, etc.....but we have heard this song before.

4K?  Sure!  Sometimes!  But mostly at 30hz.....

120hz?  Sure!  Sometimes!  But probably only at 720p, you all probably have old TVs anyway....

8K?  By golly sure!  Sometimes!  You can't prove it's not!

I have no doubt the machine will have a lot going for it, but no console is going to compare to a high end PC, and high end PCs can barely manage this shit.

We have heard that song before.

I'm still more impressed by Horizon Zero Dawn than anything that's been on PC in the last 10 years. Not that I played it for more than 2 hours. But boy, what a looker.

PS4 manages to punch above its weight class with a lot of games as gets to the end of its cycle, but we have seen that before, too.  Still, plunk the same game over into a PC and it is no contest.

That's the thing. For some reason some games on a PS4 look fantastic. Really stunning. But port those games on PC and they are not just the same, they are better.

If the PS5 can do 4k at 60hz for absolutely everything, I will be a happy camper.  But consoles always get super hyped for their groundbreaking power, and never once do they manage to even beat a medium range PC.

Still getting one, but not under the illusion of astonishing graphics prowess.

The PS5 is apparently getting high marks from developers as being easy to work with. I think Sony's approach to hardware makes more sense than Microsoft's- where Sony's is basically fewer CUs but higher clocks and massive throughput to feed them.

We'll see if that helps in the end, because outside of PS5-specific exclusives all crossplat games will be designed with PS4/Xbone/PCs in mind. Even current PC nvme drives can't lay a hand on the weird custom thing Sony has in the PS5.

Streamlining development and minimizing pop-in are really important things to be working on, so it's a good incremental step. Also, if their GI can deliver a relatively low overhead lighting solution, it can bandage the high costs of ray-tracing by allowing devs to use ray-tracing for more bang for the buck. But I think the scalability is going to be the glue that makes it stick, if it plays out that way.

I will likely buy a PS5 before I upgrade my ancient PC, because it will be far cheaper. I only boot up my PC to play minecraft or Rocksmith. The mods and controls for minecraft are superior, and Rocksmith on the PC gives me CDLC and ASIO.

There are some real nice looking games on the PS4 (I have a Pro), and for the most part they're good enough for me and my honkin tv. But we're talking exclusives: HZD, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Death Stranding all look great and are playable. Older and cross-plat stuff like the Witcher 3 and GTA V look way better on my 970...at shit framerates. For the Witcher, it's still enjoyable but the GTA V pc version is tangibly better (more pedestrians, more car variety, etc).

It's a good situation to be in, really.

Obviously depends on what you would have to upgrade.....but isn't the PS5 going to be like 600 bucks or something?  Maybe 500?  Early pricing in DK, which is obviously skewed, has it going for even more than that.

Not that it changes anything as such.  The experts are guessing 500, but I am guessing it'll be higher at launch.

To me a Playstation is NEVER a bad deal, not even at $600, if nothing else for those 4 or 5 exclusives you get through its lifetime. I am absolutely buying it as soon as the first exclusive that I am interested in shows up, knowing that a few more will certainly follow.

I grabbed the PS4 a few monhts after launch for Bloodborne and even though I love it and I think it's a very cool machine, over 5 years I've only ever used it for Bloodborne, Persona 5, GT Sport, Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, and Last of Us 2. And yes, still worth $600 if that happened to be the case with the next one.

Pretty much agree.  My PS4 has also been my daily driver for things like Netflix, HBO, etc.  The apps they have are generlly working better than what you have on PC or in browsers, and the sound is better too usually.  I will get a PS5 for that reason alone, assuming it is going to manage that shit at 4K.  Guess it will have a 4k blu ray, but I think I have long stopped caring about physical discs.

The PS3 launched at $599*. It wouldn’t surprise me if the PS5 had the same price though I do think $499 or perhaps $549 is more likely.

* ignoring the $499 model that was missing HDMI output and other features

I'll have to almost completely rebuild the pc except for PSU at this point, so it would get pricey. And it would likely tempt me to get an Index, too, so...$600 seems like the bargain choice here!

We had a similar conversation over on Discord and I generally agree that Playstations are usually worth buying even if you only play a few exclusive games. Over on the PC the past several years I've played stuff like Slay the Spire, Ratropolis, Disco Elysium, Grim Dawn, and Hex. I struggle to think of anything I've played that needs an impressive rig. FFXIV looks pretty good I guess? Maybe Mortal Kombat 11 looked better on the PC? No idea really and probably not enough to matter.

On the PS4 I had stuff like God of War, Bloodborne, and Spider-man. Could those games have looked better on the PC? Sure, but they're never going to end up there. The PC doesn't currently have the equivalent of Sony 1st party stuff. They used to have Valve and Blizzard but they aren't quite what they use to be. What the PC does have is a fuck ton of indie developers and an outlet for those developers to get their stuff released.

Roundabout way of saying I haven't felt compelled to upgrade my PC because of games in ages (most recent upgrade was so I could rip and transcode my movie collection faster).

I don't think you can mix and match like that.  But you can do cross store multiplayer, according to reddit.

The Epic store has the Platinum upgrade on sale right now, and I think you get a $10 coupon for "buying" the base Civ game.  So you wind up getting Civ6 + Gathering Storm and Rise & Fall for $29 vs $47 on Steam.

I already had Epic installed for Mechwarrior 5, so I went with it.
