Updated the server map.

Also, Peaceful makes it so there's no monsters in SP.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

The hill that is in the way houses my condo, the only thing it's blocking is FT in torches... I'll just relocate them.

I have spent entirely too long spelunking in this game. Also, lava? Evil. Got swept up in a water current and dropped into a pool of lava. Result? Dead cube-man, and loss of my first diamond pick.  Ohhhhh, I see. Hours of cave exploring later, I am now trying to build my first house.

Stupid question, but how does one open/close an iron door? Or do they not? I figured they would be like wood doors just harder to knock down/have blown up.

Iron Doors need switches or pressure plates.

Is anyone else having a problem with the game locking up and crashing about every 5 minutes?  I jumped into the server last night and was having a hell of a time.

It happens. Likely the cause of the server bogging down.

Has anyone gotten to taking the procedural goodness from Minecraft and fudging something together that'd convert the output into fully textured/rendered worlds... in semi-realtime?
I've just DLed it and ever since I did and pooped around a bit the more I got to feeling that the game is really just a glorified real-time 3D editor.  Many newer engines use real-time tech. (some with procedural stuff to speed things along) with dumbed-down graphics that you can literally "play" in before it actually chunks out the good stuff when you're done building.

Granted, part of the charm of the thing is having it all "blocky" I guess.

I think the thing about blocks that makes it a superior choice is there is a very sort of 1-1 relationship between your actions and what happens in the world.  You can pick up a block, you can place that block somewhere else.  Give it a more "realistic" feel, and you'd sort of feel like there was a layer of "magic" between you and the game world, barring some sort of miraculous game engine that renders particles and physics and lets you ACTUALLY shovel dirt and bust up rock, etc on that kind of scale, I think I would feel disconnected from the game a bit.

I mean, there is a bit of actual game to the single player, in terms of exploring, fighting monsters, etc.  But with no monsters in multiplayer, it very much does have a shared sandbox/building space feel to it, but thats a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not saying to get rid of the blocks in the build and play process.  I'm saying get rid of the blocks in the 'ooh ahh, look at what I built' process.  e.g. Apply the 'realism mod' post-production and admire your work as it would be in a modern game world.

You're talking about, say, given a configuration of wood blocks and leaf blocks, have it convert to a speedtree with the same basic dimensions, and do analogous operations for all the other blocks and combinations?  Having it look better than the blocks in all cases (i.e. make sure that in all the ways you can combine all the different block types there aren't any configurations that produce weird artifacts when you try to join it all up) would be a lot of work.  I'm sure it's doable, but perhaps not by one guy.

I put the sound files into the resource folder first.  THEN hit that.  Then it worked.  This last release borked the sound... fix tomorrow hopefully.

I seem to be crashing almost as soon as I enter the last day or so... Any items other than boats and minecarts causing crashes?

I also keep crashing out, but it seems very very random. The first day I kept locking up once every 5-30 minutes, yesterday I think it happened once. It's not a huge problem, except for the fact that minecraft won't actually allow me to pin it to the 7's taskbar, so I have to kill it and restart it the old way.

Speaking of, do we have any access to ice/snow?

Also, one thing I'm curious about. The rules state that we shouldn't place water, what exactly happens if we do that? The whole level fills up with water to the height where you added the water, unless you use sponges like a motherfucker?

No, water and lava flow to a certain point outward and stop.  As I understand it, the server has to keep track of every flowing block, which can bog it down.  Early in, there was a TNT used to create a crater where the ocean was pouring into a huge underground chamber.  Took hours to clear up.

Two of them. It caused issues and I believe that was around the time when we had our first crash where we had to roll back.

Where do you find the sound files? I downloaded the stand alone client from the main site, it downloaded stuff on the first run, and i have no sound, and no idea where to look for the sound files.

He updated the game to fix the sound. Try turning sound off and on again, if that doesn't work just re-download the exe from the site.

No, the map either starts as snow or doesn't have any at all. We did have ice around the starting area (a map generator bug), but its since been removed. Not sure if his plan to add Biomes will be implemented into Multiplayer, but even if he does do that, we'd probably have to start fresh to get that feature.

You'll find the resources folder, which contains the sound files, at %userprofile%/appdata/roaming/.minecraft/resources on vista and 7. You can copy/paste the previous line from the % onward in the "start search" area of your start menu to open the folder directly.

edit: as mentioned above, if it doesn't work after copying the needed files into the resources directory, hit f3 and the s key to enable sound (every time you enter the game).
There's also a bug in the current build that hangs the client while generating new worlds (Saving chunks) or entering existing ones (simulating world for a bit) when the client is active on the secondary display of many nvidia and ati cards.

My girlfriend hates me now thanks to you assholes.   Ohhhhh, I see.
Common occurence: "oh shit, it's 2am!"
I just, I just... cant stop digging.

After surviving the 1st night cowering like a woosie, I proceeded to herd sheep into an enclosure so I could farm their wool.  Night came, I checked in the morning, and they were all gone.  What happened to em?  My favorite moment of my first night was "wtf am I supposed to do with all this shit?  oh yah, build a storage chest!"  I was all like   Heart

Also, holy shit... he added farming over the summer?  Seriously, when he gets mobs into the MP version one would be hard-pressed to find a better indie game.  Actually, probably could say that now.

You'll see me on the server just as soon as I get comfortable with things.
