Oh God, last night I said to my gf "Hey!  We should play Minecraft together!  It'll be like Mol and Dom in Inception!"   Facepalm    (was the worst /rolleyes I've ever gotten)
Someone break into my mind and save me please...

ohhh, and farming is fun!

I've got my own massive cactus farm along with tree stand and wheatfield.  All neatly fenced in so those bastard farm animals dont eat my shit.  (something I realized last night when after waiting days for my harvest that never came I spotted a devil chicken next to a patch of grass - then the grass disappeared.  Then suddenly, my sword lept out of its scabbard and killed it.   awesome, for real

I am told you can grow trees underground with proper torchlight.

Same applies to grass.

I have underground trees and grass in a room under the road going through one of the mountains next to Bat Country.

Anyone fooled with using mechanics and redstone circuitry in the game to do any 'programming?'

Oh.. hi guy!  The answer is 'yes' it seems.

It's a 16-bit console built within minecraft.  Essentially, a computer within a game... built with virtual analogs for digital computing, using nothing but 'bitparts' and logic... no code whatsoever, cept 'machine code.'  (that's the next step, a compiler that'll accept some form of 'real' code to automate things a bit more)
You can do similar with LBP and such, but it's not as impressive.

And uhhh, I probably just borked that whole explanation but who cares.  /headsplode

Oooh. I see. It wasn't *fully* lit, but it wasn't all that dark either. But I guess that explains that.

I've been thinking about making a place on a mountain top where they can't reach from the outside, but without a roof. A castle if you will. I assume that as long as it's fully lit, it'll be fine.

I set up a series of 3x3x3 pits in front of my base, with a column protruding 2 blocks above the surface of each. Then I put a torch on each side of the column. They keep anything from spawning in the vicinity, and if anything wanders (or chases me) into the area, they blunder into a pit to await the sun.

So the little cul-de-sac where I built my base is essentially monster-free 24/7 thanks to all the torch pylons I've set up. I did away with all the pits and walls as I haven't even seen a monster outside my window in forever. I have an underground farm going, and I've just been digging and digging. I broke into the largest natural cave I've seen thus far, took a while to torchlight it and clear it of exploding dickmonsters. I've been racking up coal and iron, though nothing more interesting yet.

Thinking about setting up a tree farm. So far I've just been planting any saplings I find in the cul-de-sac so I can run out and chop some wood even at night in reasonable safety. You don't get wheat seeds from harvesting wheat though, do you? So to be really self-sufficient I'd need a grass farm too?

I wish I could figure out what it is I don't get about Minecraft.  Every forum I read has people raving about the game but everytime I get myself to try it again I end up thinking "I just don't see where the fun is."  Heartbreak

It basically boils down to this issue: Did you play with legos as a child? Did you follow the instructions or did you make random crap as big as possible?

Yeah, staying underground? Not so safe. One of my mines broke through into the fucking underverse or something. I took 128 torches with me to distribute in order to light the place and prevent monster spawns. I used them all up and have no idea what proportion of the place I covered. Probably not much, because there were multiple ways I still could have gone. Monsters all over hell. It's just like being outside only you can plummet into lava if you're not careful.

On the bright side, I got out alive with shitloads of resources, some of which I had never found before. And I discovered the value of carrying some gravel or sand around. Since they don't stick to anything, you can slide blocks of them down walls to block/smother enemies or form stairs to let you get down.

You don't get wheat seeds from harvesting wheat though, do you? So to be really self-sufficient I'd need a grass farm too?

Every time you chop wheat you have a chance for between 0 to 3 seeds, along with the wheat you harvest.
And y'know, as fun as farming is... I'd much rather farm pigs or sheep, but I guess they dont multiply.  The best one can do is fence in the spawn yes?  Will skeleton archers get them?

In other news:  I started gathering resources on the f13 server... so be mindful of random pits to nowhere  why so serious?  Took WAY too long to find some simple coal.  I ended up having to mountainclimb to get to it, literally building stairways along the cliff.  Iron???   awesome, for real   Does it even exist on the f13 server?   And yah yah, I know I should fan out and farm the nether-regions, but I really wanted to build something in a populated area, close to the spawn... and with no minecarts, /headache.   Mining? not smart in the built up areas, 'cause likely I'll run into someone's creation and/or cause some kind of flood.  Also, mining is less fruitful than raw surveys of cliffs where ore pokes out.
Soooo... I think I'll just build a road on my way to the western wood (errr, southern wood?), gather crap for a while... then come back.

And note:  I dont like the RPG texture pack.  Not thematically neutral enough.

Yeah, I harvested my wheat and ended up with twice as many seeds as I started with. I mostly eat pork, but the nice thing about wheat is that unlike pork it stacks. Meaning I can store multiple harvests, dozens of loaves of bread worth, in one slot. From what I've read, some people run around out in the wild with a workbench and a coule stacks of wheat so they can stop and bake bread in the field.

As far as resource gathering goes, I haven't touched mine cars yet. I mostly just dig big staircases into the ground, stopping to carve out any mineral veins I hit. More often than not I'll bust into a cavern when I get down low enough, and that's where the good stuff is. Next time I play I need to head back down to the underverse and do some more exploring.

Minecarts and boats arent allowed on the f13 server right?
Also, do I still need the 'patch' that fixes the MP inventory bug?  I've logged off and kept checking and my inventory has remained intact.  Do server outages effect it?

Died twice poking around this seemingly infinite cave system looking for resources. I think I've had enough. I burrowed to the surface by jumping and spamming blocks beneath me, then digging above me, and repeating over and over. I placed a marker on the surface before burrowing back down. Once I can nail down the location of that marker relative to my base, I am going to start a giant fucking pit mine until I've exposed the whole fucking thing to the sun. I'm going to fucking move there and spam the whole area with torches so I can keep it up during the night. This is now my sole minecraft objective. CONQUEST OF THE UNDERVERSE.

I spent a week or so building my castle, but your post about the underverse got me exploring today.  So, I've begun carving out Moria near my castle.  Tonight, I found some awesome stuffs.  Found my first bit of redstone but it's surrounded by about four zombie/creepers and two green slimes that are freaking huge.  This game is insane.
