I dunno, I don't see it. I mean I see something, I just cant say its a monkey. I wonder what it drops. Minecraft Snapshot 12w03a Time for the snapshot of week 3, 2012! List of changes, since 1.1 last week:
Ladders regained their collision box, and vines are climbable when they have a solid block behind them Added jungle biome (requires a new world) with new tree and leaf types Updated language files Dispensers will place mobs instead of releasing the spawner egg Zombies have new path-finding AI Wolves have new AI and can be bred (when tame)

Time for the snapshot of week 4, 2012! List of changes:
New jungle-specific mob that can be tamed Skeletons have new AI and a few new behaviors Various minor bug fixes and changes Added an experience item to creative mode Added a flame item… Updated language files
As you know, Minecraft is run using the Light-weight Java Game Library (LWJGL). We’ve been using a really old version of LWJGL because last time we tried to update it the game broke down and became unplayable for a lot of people. We are going to try to update it again once we release Minecraft 1.2.
However, the recent LWJGL version (2.8.3) includes a bunch of fixes for those of you who play with non-latin languages. If you want to try it out (to be able to chat in Japanese or Korean, for example), you should go to LWJGL’s download page and get lwjgl-2.8.3.zip (link for the lazy). In it you will find a folder called “jar” and a folder called “native.” Pick the files in those folders and replace the files located in your “.minecraft/bin” and “.minecraft/bin/natives” folders. Chatting in Korean should be a lot easier now.

For them to really evoke Minecraft the bricks would need to be cubes rather than standard Lego scale. Which would make them incompatible with other Lego sets and therefore not really Legos.

Nope. All of the square pieces are either a little too tall or a little too short to be cubes.

I thought LEGO had cubes.
They have "1x1s" but they aren't cubes even if you ignore the connector part (the cylinder) cause they are slightly taller than they are wide.

Why can't Lego just make cubes? They make all kinds of other weirdy shapes for their kits.

Started profiling the increased height worlds, still looking ok. Also got cat and zombie-smashing-door sounds from @c418 Zombies will only be able to break doors on hard (and hardcore) difficulty setting Yes, only wooden doors

Would it be possible to have a way of getting jungle biomes in 1.1 maps without messing up the other biomes? - some dude I'm trying to fix it... - _Jeb Biome data will be saved with the chunks in the new world format. Tool makers can probably use this to restore old maps. - _Jeb

Hello! Jon and I have been working on a new map format for Minecraft that we’ve dubbed “Anvil” (it’s just a name). The purpose of the new format is to prepare for modding, especially to allow for more block types, but also to improve other areas of the game (such as map height). The changes are: Maximum build height has been increased to 256 (was 128) Empty sections of the world are not loaded into memory Block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256) by adding a 4 bit data layer (similar to how meta data is stored) Block ordering have been changed from x/z/y to y/z/x in order to improve compression Packets for sending chunks have been updated (a full 128-high chunk is smaller than the old format, and a chunk with lots of empty space is much smaller) Biomes are saved per x/z column, which means they can be altered by tools The next snapshot, and Minecraft 1.2, will automatically convert worlds to the new format. The files of the current format (“McRegion”) will remain in your save folder, if you need to restore them for some reason. I’ve prepared a converter (with source code) for tool makers that wants to be prepared. You do not need to use this to convert your maps! It’s only for reference! Download the converter+source here Some info: The 16x128x16 “Blocks”, “Data”, “SkyLight” and “BlockLight” tags are removed A “Sections” tag has been added with up to 16 compound tags Each section has 16x16x16 “Blocks”, “Data”, “SkyLight” and “BlockLight” tags Each section has a “Y” integer tag saying which section it is (note that some Y positions can be skipped). 0 is at the bottom of the world and 15 is the topmost section Each section also has a “AddBlocks” tag, which is a DataLayer byte array just like “Data”. The “AddBlocks” tag is not included in the converter since the old format never had block ids above 255. This extra tag is created whenever a block requires it, so the getTile() method needs to check if the array exists and then combine it with the default block data. In other words, blockId = (addBlock << 8) + baseId. Each chunk has a 16×16 byte array with biome ids called “Biomes”. If this array is missing it will be filled when the game starts. The converter doesn’t include any biome sources, though (it had too many dependencies to be included). Note that the old format is XZY and the new format is YZX (see the difference between DataLayer and OldDataLayer). The new format uses the extension “.mca” instead of “.mcr” (the old format is kept for safety, with the level.dat backed up as “level.dat_mcr”) Finally, a shoutout to Robinton’s hard work on his mods: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/310298-100robintons-mods/Cheers, // jeb_

New world format. Should remove some of the issues of updating SMP servers. LIKE! Biomes are now part of the terrain, rather than something floating on top ( That's why they move ). Converting a 1.2 world to this new format should allow you to have new Biome areas in unexplored areas ( Previously, this was not going to happen, requiring a new world ). Areas not in use, are not loaded in the server/client. + Performance ( Possibly). More room for new block/ore/terrain types ( From 256, to 4096 possible ) Compressed net traffic for areas that are all the same blocks ( Like Air. Im 16 x 16 and all air! ) 128 more blocks of air above existing terrain height. That's two times the previous world height max. Also, on the AI side: Villagers auto mate? The lower half of that post is for moders.

I keep hovering over the 'purchase' button for this, but still haven't.
How hard is it to get into? Is the single player worth it, or do I want to get on the f13 server? What mods and textures do I need right away, or is it good to go right out of the box?
I *think* i'd like this a lot, but i don't have a lot people in my circle of friends that have actually played with it.

Its not. Its free form Zelda with legos. At least that's how I describe it to others. IT's more fun with friends and Vent, for sure. But you can go off and make your own area, as the map has no limits. You may, subjective, want to use a texture pack that will take you from the 8 bit look, to about 16 bit. Texture packs are purely subjective. Some people like the "Realistic" look, some like bright colors, some like 3dDot heroes look, some...are just fucking wacky.

If you're on the fence and haven't actually played it yet, there's a timed demo available from PCGamer if you don't want to jump in blind. It's a pretty old version, but is far closer to the current state of Minecraft than the freebie alpha .30 available on the Minecraft site. It's what I tried for a while last year before I got my own full copy.

The f13 server probably won't be active again until a map reset but you can wander around, gaze at the vestige of our civilization and listen to Xanthippe mutter to herself.

Oh my god, buy it Murdoc. Unless you're really cash strapped, it's an amazing game/world/toy/thing. You should probably do a bit of SSP (survival single player) to learn the basics and then jump into the server. The biggest difference is that everyone has to jump in bed at the same time (not the same bed, weirdo) to make night pass. So there's a lot more monsters hanging around.
I should be back on the f13 server soonish. Just kinda kicking around on my SSP world as I mentioned in the forum. But that gets old pretty quick, nice to be on the server.
