Dunno, but it's been in the game for months and months and Notch has said when it was pointed out to him that he doesn't intend to change it.

So as far as I'm concerned it's a legit way to get rid of excess redstone. I mean, you still have to mine the obsidian, which is still extremely time-consuming.

Redstone seems abundant, until you start to actually build contraptions with it. Then you never have enough  why so serious?

It would be faster to just pour water onto lava lakes. TBH.

If your actually building obsidian structures, use molds instead of mining the shit. Hauling 40 buckets of lava from the nether is still easier/faster then mining that stuff.

Wow, there's a lot of negativity in that announcement thread. Lots of hand-wringing over GPL stuff and general poo-pooing of Bukkit.

Fuck 'em, I'm excited.

So, can someone explain to me, as an enduser who has zero modding experience, what this actually means about my ability to use mods for my game?

To my very limited knowledge, it basically means a stable, unified codebase from which to make and install mods. Think of something like WoW, where you just download and install a mod and it's there. Currently in Minecraft you have to download a mod, open the actual minecraft.jar file in an archive extraction tool, drag the mod's files into there and do some other dickery.

It's also an utter pain in the ass to get mods to play nicely together and it means that if you play on several decently-modded MC servers, you have to have several different mc.jars with each server's mods on them and switch back and forth.

I also heard a twitter blurb that the idea was that a server will set up mods for their server, and when a player tries to connect to that server it will automatically download and set up those mods to be compatible.  I don't know if this idea has changed or been altered since then though.

In an ideal world, yeah, the client wouldn't have to worry about any of that.  Server sets up the mod, client connects, everything works.

Well, Bukkit already allows for drop in additions VIA plugins. But yes, the end goal is modding will be core to the Vanilla Minecraft server and client apps. Better support, more stable (?), direct interaction instead of being something that "wraps" around it.

Its a good thing.

So, I downloaded the snapshot a week or two ago, and started up a single-player world.

First, let me say that the jungle biome is cool. It seems to be populated only with chickens and ocelots. And the trees are enormous. It's all very pretty.

Second, I dug down to find lava, used it to mold a portal (I haven't found any diamonds yet), and ported myself into the nether.

Well, I popped out in a tiny little chamber inside the netherrack. I did a quick coord compare, and it seems as if my position in the nether corresponds to the portal I built in the normal world. But in the nether, the game formed a chamber just big enough to step out of the portal.

It may just be dumb luck so far, but I've dug for dozens of blocks in several directions, and haven't broken out yet.

So anyway, the upshot: it seems like they've updated that piece of code, so that when you build a portal, the other end doesn't have to come out in a naturally-occurring open space.

It's just air added on top.

Nope, world gen was not changed. So you just have space ( A F-ton ) above everything.

Sky cities 100% supported now.

Not even on a new world? What's the use of more empty air with the same depth? It would be so much better implemented as +/- the existing 0 depth.

Not even on a new world. The use of more air, is you can build higher, even if your start point was high already ( Like a mountain ).

I'm not sure I would really want to have to dig down over 200 blocks just to reach diamond territory.

Well ideally diamond would have its minimum depth changed to compensate.

There would need to be a great addition of new stones before adding more dig depth.  The only disappointment I have is mountain heights are unchanged.  EPic terrain possibilities wasted.  But build area is awesome.
