Does this mess up our server?

I'm halfway through building the roof on my hockey rink.

I think we already decided that we're going to just update without regenning the map

It means only the new chunks of the map that get created will get the new biome generation code. The explored parts of the map will not pick up any of those new biome features.

So basically Xanthippe needs to stop exploring awesome, for real

You would think they would put something on the front page about the release.

They are all at Minecon. However you can see the beta tag is gone.

I did!  I've been playing Dungeon Defenders waiting for the update.  When I'm not spending my time as scullery maid, that is.  Which hasn't been a lot, lately.

As of yesterday, Jens Bergensten is the new lead developer on Minecraft. He will have the final say in all design decisions, so he will kinda sorta become my boss, I guess. I’ve promised him to not pull rank. ;)

We’ve been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and I’m amazed at how much in synch we two are when it comes to how to design the game. And when we don’t agree, we discuss it and something much better comes out at a result. He’s truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him.

If you want to contact Jens, he’s on twitter as @jeb_, or you can email him at jeb@mojang.com

Personally, I will now rest for a while, then get back to work refreshed and eager. I’ll be helping out with Minecraft, of course, but also starting work on some new project.
Bye Notch. ETA on modding API and various other "It cannot be done" changes?  awesome, for real

We have a new programmer beginning in January, and we are talking to existing mod API teams, such as Bukkit, Minecraft Forge, and Minecraft Coder Pack."

At least somebody understands that "just let the modders hack on the source code" is not something that actually results in a useful ecosystem.  Here's hoping he can execute.

Realistically one should be able to start small and iterate, slowly expanding the features supported by the API, and ideally, during alpha/beta occasionally removing features that turn out to be more problematic than useful.

Mother of god, finally some sense in that area.

I can just imagine what I'd end up doing with all the mods that I'm certain people'll end up making. Maybe they'll even enable us to make a proper drawbridge etc. I certainly want one for when I make a castle, and I'd love to be able to switch on/off things like the building/crafting mod, and more realistic water physics.

This. I really just want the ability to play a modded single player game and an unmodded multi without having to uninstall and reinstall every time I want to switch. Or one legit, mostly vanilla world and another with all the Technic mods (IndustrialCraft, Equivalent Exchange, etc).

Moddable Minecraft means that someone might be able to create a single player experience that doesn't suck.

There are only two things I want from this modding stuff.

1. On connection, you are given an "official" server texture pack, even if you do not use it.
2. On connection your client is given any mod files needed from the server. So you do not need end users to edit .jar files on the client.

I accidentally discovered that the seed HARDCORE is comedy gold, now it's on our multiplayer server.   DRILLING AND MANLINESS

Which minecraft version?

1.9 or RC2, results are the same.  Hope you like fish.

I took a look at this. After flying around in creative mode for a few minutes, I finally found a tree on a little island. Are you still playing this? You are crazy!

Yup!  Though I did finally leave my little had-one-tree-island after getting some diamonds/obsidian, and went back to the little shitty spawn island and put in a portal to a 'nearby' continent (~1400,1000 - after much sea voyaging, that turned out to be the closest large land to spawn, and it's largely swamp  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?).

The ocean is amazingly huge, it is hilarious.
