The head is probably being lifted by the wake as it is dragged through the water. The picture was allegedly taken as the shark was towed back to shore having been caught in a drumline. What's more indicative of a fake is the condition of the bites. There is very little bleeding which would suggest that if it were real, the shark had been dead for some time before it became monster food. The bites also look way too deep for no gooey bits to be exposed, but I'm not expert on shark innards.

Fish don't always produce that much visible blood, and what there was would have been washed away.  Not like it can cake on in the water.

As for being a fake or not I can't say.  It does seem like a lot of work to find a big shark and cut it up just to say "OMG, bigger shark ate big shark!"

Er, last I checked, "badly injured" was not the same thing as "dead."  Was that thing seriously fucking alive for any length of time?  Or do they have to fly out Marine Biologists to pronounce it dead or something?

I don't know about that picture. The bites look extremely clean - sharks normally tear with a back and forth shake. Especially considering how thick the shark seems to be. Add in the fact that the bites are on top and bottom, looks suspicious - and the bottom bite is in the mid section, the abdominal cavity should be exposed or at least have something hanging out or a visibly different color and texture, though the pic is such that you can't determine that. Finally, if they are towing it in, where are the other pictures?

I once saw a man trying to pull himself into a boat, be bitten clean in half by one snap of a great white's jaws. Took both legs and everything up to the waste in its mouth at once and then simply bit down. Then slid back into the water.

Usually its the smaller sharks like black tips or sand sharks, with smaller mouths and jaws, who have to rely on the whole shaking thing. Not saying a great white wont use it, but they dont need to more often than not.

Oh I don't doubt that happens with some animals, but a moving 10ft shark has much more muscle and tougher skin to be completely, and cleanly bitten through like that. I am also half in the "want it to be true" club because the first true pic of whatever caused that is going straight into the wtfawesome files of the earth.

I mentioned this pic to a coworker today, and he had an anecdote.  A few years ago when he was at the beach, he saw some fishing boat hauling something in.  He decided to follow it along the beach to the dock to see how big the thing was and what it was (he suspected a shark).

Along the way he came across a 5ft fish (I think he said it was a marlin but I don't recall) washed-up and bitten through just like the above pic.  The guts and everything were intact, with nothing hanging out and just a few serrated slices around the wound where the other teeth would have hit on biting-in.    So yeah, it's possible to wound a fish like that and have it it look like that.

Plus, having googled up a few anatomy images of sharks, it looks like they're just all stomach and muscle where that bite is.  There's nothing TO hang out like in a mammal.  Like any other fish, the heart, and other guts are all shoved forward of the pectoral fins.

Shark teeth like the great white's are made for cutting, so I'm not too surprised at the bite being relatively neat.  What is surprising is the size of the animal that bit the pictured shark.

A 5m great white isn't really all that close to the maximum size they can reach, so that part is completely credible too.

If you are simply being curious, then in the spirit of being helpful, I can say I would have no idea how to even google it. I dont know where it took place. However they did show it on that TV show "When Animals Attack" I believe. So that might be a good starting point.
