A real life case of sort of Breaking Bad:

It seemed ripped from the script of a “Breaking Bad” episode, but the case of Stephen W. Doran — a math and English tutor diagnosed with stage 3 cancer who now stands accused of trafficking crystal meth — is all too real.

“This isn’t a television show. This is serious business,” Suffolk district attorney spokesman Jake Wark said, referring to the hit AMC series in which a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with stage 3 cancer turns to dealing crystal meth.

A lawyer for Doran, a former Democratic state representative from 1980 to 1994 who once chaired the Legislature’s Ethics Committee, told a judge at Doran’s West Roxbury District Court arraignment yesterday that his client has been receiving chemotherapy for the past 11 months.

“His life is on the line here literally. This is a man who is being treated for stage 3 cancer at Mass. General Hospital,” attorney Vincent Murray said of Doran, 57, of Dorchester, who was arrested as he left the Match Charter Middle School in Jamaica Plain with what police said was an express parcel containing 480 grams of crystal meth.

I'm in the process of catching up on this show since it starts again soon.  I only ever got to see the first season.  I love this show SO much.  I think even more than the first season of Dexter.

So, I finally have a smart TV in my bedroom and started watching this show today. Got through the first episode and 1/2 before I was interrupted by life. Can't wait to get back to it. I am feeling eerily sympatico with ol' Walt. I wonder how long that will last.

Somewhere around season 2-3 you start to recognize that this has gone beyond "I need money to save my life" into full-on ego trip. He's much less sympathetic a character these days, but he is goddamn riveting to watch.

It's so worth the time to catch up.  I was late to the Breaking Bad party, too, and it almost immediately became my favourite show.  Can't wait for the final episodes this August.  Also, I really love my tiny little smart TV, too.

Luckily the gore factor is reduced after that episode.  Until, well, that'll have to be a surprise.   

I'm watching the seasons again and I forgot how utterly fucking great the writing is by the middle of season 2.

Been rewatching all the seasons, mostly due to Mrs. Naum repeatedly streaming episodes on both big screen and on iPad in bedroom and they just play the whole season through. So looking forward to the final 8 episodes -- this is absolutely the best television fare and it'll be sad when it is finally over. In just like the ancient Greek tragedies, I suspect Mr. White is going to get his existential comeuppance. Question will be how many he takes down with him.

Even re-viewing, the shows are still tense viewing, even after you know how it is going to unfold. The writing and acting (never imagined the silly dentist on Seinfeld was such a acting monster) is excellent.

More shows need to end on their own accord for this very reason.  Just saw this in an article:

Cranston, who plays Walter White, told Zap2it that their highly-anticipated ending is “very appropriate,” adding that “You watch this — there’s no apologies. [Creator] Vince [Gilligan] was able to write to the ending that he wanted, and we’re very pleased with that.”

Gilligan was also interviewed and also feels very satisfied with the ending. “If we didn’t get it right it was nobody’s fault but ours,” he said. “So the big thought that kept going through my mind was let’s make this as good as we can make it. Let’s just bust our asses and make it as satisfying as possible.”

Finished the first season. It is very good, but god it is just unrelenting. It really needs some lighthearted laughs every now and then. Also Anna Gunn needs to get naked.

And no, it never gets any better or less tense. There are things you will laugh at and then think "Holy shit, that's fucking terrible" but you can't help laughing about it. I always said watching the show was like pulling a scab. It's an uncomfortable experience that once you start, you just can't stop.
