There's nothing wrong with the dress in just about any other situation than a kids show. It's Sesame Street. Nobody (Katy's or Sesame's) thought that this would be the one time in her career to class it up a notch?
A time and a place... and all that.
Oh my god! Some cleavage can be seen! Won't someone protect the children! And legs too! Quick someone get a bhurka on that woman stat!

Yes, a bhurka was exactly what I was thinking. You're overreacting as much as the media.
It's simply about appropriateness.
Even worse than the dress is her shitty music. I'd rather my daughter look at boobs than have to listen to that shite all day.

Okay so I don't get the "shitty music" thing. Maybe I don't listen to enough music lately, but she seems merely average. Shitty is like...shitty. I'm pretty sure it's not out of tune, and the lyrics are inconsequential because it's pop. Is it...too simplistic? Doesn't add enough to the body of music as a whole? I mean, everybody sings repetitive simple music these days, but there's an awful lot of focus here on how shitty her stuff is.

I don't think it needed to be pulled, but why not just sing in jeans and a shirt? It could be a tight shirt, if you want. It's Sesame Street, I don't think you need to worry about the kids getting warped, but there's no reason to get all glammed up either.

So wait. Her wearing a dress that wouldn't be out of place on a '50s sitcom like Leave it to Beaver is inappropriate? Because you know, you can see a bit of cleavage? What are we going to turn toddlers into sex maniacs if we let a female leg or collar bone be seen? It wasn't inappropriate and to think otherwise is just silly.

Not only that, but we should all instinctively rail against any initiative to cover up Katy's boobies.

It still hasn't been explained what's "inappropriate" about Katy Perry having boobs. IIRC there were complaints from mothers after screeings of that Herbie movie that Lindsay Lohan's boobs were too big. Not that her clothes were too revealing, mind you, but that Lohan's body shape in itself was just too curvy and provocative for kids to be looking at -- this was right before she became an anorexic train wreck. What sort of message does that send to kids? What are parents afraid of? That their kids will see her breasts and get hungry?
What are we going to turn toddlers into sex maniacs if we let a female leg or collar bone be seen?
Valid questions. What exactly is the fear here?

Just for the record, here's Katy's dress: And here's the first three June Cleaver images that came up for Google images: Sure, there were some pics that came up that looked like Katy's dress in that search, but each was listed as a pin up girl. How many pin up girls were shown on Sesame Street? My issue stems not from letting our children see nudity. That's what the media is focusing on and frankly, that part is only to drive headlines. I allow my five year old to view almost any type of art in a museum or gallery hop that she wishes. Of course, if it is graphic I'll turn her away, but I'm not embarrassed of the body and I'm trying to instill in her that she should not be, either. I take issue with the lack of respect towards the institution. Again, I wouldn't wear a speedo to my wife's next christmas party.... there's a time and a place for everything.

I would be surprised if even one hit on the first page of that image search had anything to do with Sesame Street.

To continue the "what's appropriate on Sesame Street" derail, what do you think the odds are that if an actor on the modern Sesame Street died, they'd acknowledge it in any way on the show rather than pretend he never existed for fear of being "inappropriate"? (Anyone else here remember when Mr. Hooper died?)

After thinking about it a bit I think what rankles with me is the way that the video is nothing more than a promotional video for Katy Perry. Compare it, for instance, with Ladysmith Black Mambazo's alphabet, from "back in teh day": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2spD2F6ZCM

The real question is "Why was she even asked to be on Sesame Street?" not if the dress shows too much boob.

Again, I wouldn't wear a speedo to my wife's next christmas party.... there's a time and a place for everything. This doesn't compute. Sorry. Her having bare shoulders and showing some cleavage is not akin to something like a speedo at a Christmas party. It's just not. I guess they could have made her wear a turtleneck but I just don't see the big deal here. I don't. I'd let my daughter watch it and never think twice about it.

I don't know if it's that celebrities can't be bothered to come up with unique content for the show and/or won't appear unless they think they can promote themselves in the process, or that the producers think that kids just want to see familiar celebs doing completely familiar things, or what.

I was working on a casual game, and someone bugged some cleavage. I've only been doing casual games for a few years now, but apprently there is a very vocal minority in the soccer mom set that can't hack cleavage.
Boggled my mind. The costume fit the character, and I didn't think twice, but they told me they've gotten complaints in the past about stuff like that.

I saw an interview with the Exec. Producer that pretty much said that the main use for the celebrities was to get young parents to watch the show.
