If you pan back, you can see a helicopter hovering outside carrying Sarah Palin with a high powered rifle.

Hey! It takes a lot of effort to keep up eating all those treats. Someone's got to do it!

You call it an accident. I call it justice.

This struck me as probably funnier than it is, but the bird pausing after throwing out a treat is priceless.

About ten years ago, I got so irritated with squirrels eating all the seed in our bird feeder at our old place that I strung out a long thin wire to a tree out in the woods behind the house, about twelve feet off the ground near the house and then higher as it went back towards the tree. Then I used a long pole with a hook on it to put the feeder up on it and take it down for a refill. The jump from the tree was *really* long, so I figured that wouldn't work, and the wire was so thin I figured the squirrels couldn't do it.
So at first they tried doing a ninja thing where they'd shimmy down the wire upside down. They could do it but it was clearly difficult and tiring and after a while they stopped. I was so happy. Then I noticed that they were all eyeing the jump from the tree to the feeder, which didn't have a bottom plate--just perches. They eventually started doing the jump. It was long enough and the target small enough that about one in every six tries was a miss, and the squirrel would hurtle onwards and slam into the window. Lots of moments with squirrels then sliding pathetically down the window like in a Warner Brothers cartoon. None of them seemed particularly hurt by it, so they'd usually go right back and try again. When they hit the feeder, they usually wouldn't hold on, they'd just shake it enough that seed would come out on the ground, and then they'd drop and eat.
It was worth it for the one-in-six misses.

Shit.. I just did that with the feeder I bought but none of the squirrels have been brave enough to try. I kind of want to string it from the house now to see if I can create the same splat here.

Man you couldn't have that of that AFTER everyone had a camera on their smartphone? I can already see an alternate timeline where it was squirrelsplat.com instead of icanhascheezburger.com.

Yeah, I should have filmed it with my early primitive digital camera but I never thought to.

Squirrels are much more fun to watch than birds. And we have big bushy black squirrels here and they're gorgeous. The squirrels around here aren't very brave though. They're all fat, stuffed with bird seed and walnuts.

The wrestler wanted chairs. The kid thought he wanted him to get in the ring.

Yep, low voltage wire works miracles in the yard.
I have a collar the effectively stops squirrels from accessing the feeders on my dual shepherd's crook. But now the deer come by and empty it. I've given up at this point, until I can afford to fence the yard. Goddamned deer.

I used repellent for a while, but that only kept them from eating the plants. The bucks still came around in the fall and ruined trees rubbing their antlers. Cost me about $10k for an 8' chain link fence to keep them out. Not super attractive, but it's the only way I get to eat any of the fruit

I used some of my leftover 7' wire fencing to connect my two apple tree fences and protect the garden bed. It's worked fine so far, though of course the squirrels have been digging in there a bit.
I love animals, but deer, rabbit, chipmunk, groundhog, squirrel, raccoon, so many vermin with no redeeming value. I get pissed when someone bitches about a fox or hawk moving into the woods.
That pic was a while ago. That garden has gone insane. I've layer-tilled and fertilized the soil down about 2 1/2 feet. The roots just keep stretching out and sucking up all that sweet fertilizer. As soon as I learn how to make mozzarella, my caprese will be almost free! People who like to eat well and don't have a garden are nuts. So little effort goes into this thing and it keeps producing amazing veg.

That looks like my old garden set up. Couldn't stop squirrels but it did ok for rabbits, groundhogs and deer.
