The Sword of Truth author is a local politico where you live? Or was the Local Politician just quoting Goodkind?

Gang Rape has nothing to do with Democracy.

Gang Rape is the very definition of Tyranny.

Who the fuck is that retarded ?  Didn't Terry Goodkind just write shit fantasy books ?

A politician who quotes Terry Goodkind should NEVER be listened to on anything. Ever.

'Reality' is the only word in the language that should always be used in quotes.

No, it totally does. See 5 guys voted to rape her, the one woman voted no. Vote passes!

It's a 5-year-olds understanding of Democracy, which is apropos for Goodkind who has a 5-year-olds grasp of most topics.

Jesus those books were horrid.  I actually got wrapped up in the first one, then at the 2/3 mark it turned into a 200page S&M fest.  I felt swindled!

Which state is the hockey coach?

New Hampshire.

No, don't help him or he'll never graduate.

I'm curious about the asterisks in Mississippi.  As for the sadness of the map, I'd like to ask which public employees have provided more to society than these men and women?

Janitor.  No really, the guy cleaning up the bathroom at a public building/school has done far more to make my life more enjoyable than any publically funded coach.

Boo hoo.

Sports are good, and coaches get paid well to generate income. There are hundreds of thousands of non-revenue players with scholarships that would disagree with you.

I'm curious about that myself. I absolutely believe it, especially if you see the football stadium my high school has now compared to the podunk POS it had when I was attending.

I was pretty sure only a few schools actually turn a profit.

Don't know if it counts as funny but it's certainly interesting.

No, it's not funny. But I don't think I've ever seen a better graphic that demonstrates why humanity is unlikely to ever achieve Type 1 Civilization.

You are correct.  Here is a good, recent study on the subject that covers NCAA Division 1 public universities.

From the study linked above:
Quote
In fact, only the programs at the very top of the FBS subdivision generate more money from athletics than they spend. Fewer than one in four of the 97 public FBS athletic departments generated more money than they spent in any given year between 2005 and 2010 (and almost none of the remaining Division I programs were profitable). Even so, about two thirds of these profitable FBS departments still received athletic subsidies in 2010.

Yeah, my bad.  What was I thinking?

I'm fine with this.  If you think humans are going to eventually turn into the cast of Star Trek, you need to get out more and stop hanging out with your usual smart friends for a week or two.  Some people can only ever hope to achieve a short career in sports, so it's not as if the allocation of funding is keeping anyone out of college.  We're a bunch of nomadic omnivores, eating and fucking all over the place, and that's what we will be for another hundred-thousand years or so.

Is there a reason why they don't have a special sort of insurance that they pay lots for and if their career ends in early onset tears, they can collect from?  And don't give me "living in the style they're accustomed to... I don't buy that.  if an average person can live off 50K or so a year, so can they.  Give them health insurance so they can have all the brain and knee surgeries they'll obviously need, too.  A lot of us don't even have that.  Isn't that enough?  They can probably make the sort of dosh in a year that most of us will probably never see in a lifetime.  I also have to wonder how many tax loopholes these teams (which are basically corporations) take advantage of?  But, as usual, what do I know?  The only athletes I know are hockey players back in the Rick Tocchet days when I had to go to benefits and games because of work.  And I mostly couldn't understand what they were talking about even when they had all their teeth in!  Rick earning over 2 million was a ton back then.  I heard the other day that some Finnish player is making over 6 million.  Wowsers.  Don't they all become coaches,  special guests and sports commentators anyway?

But anyway... funny picture thread:

And yet I still have some sort of unnaturally intense crush on him.   ACK!

Zoos in China regulary practice how to deal with animals that got free. As you can't use a real tiger for that (obviously), humans in customs are being used as 'stunt-animals':
