Princess Tiana. Other good thing about her is that she's a decent female role model by Disney Princess standards. She wants to run a business and own the best restaurant in town and in the end, it's the prince who gives everything up to be with her totally subverting the usual perception that "princesses" need to be saved. (See also Jasmine, Rapunzel, Pocohontas and Mulan)  |

Saw it, just repeating a criticism I remember hearing at the time from, omg, an actual African American interviewed on the local news.
Other criticisms I've seen are:
1) That once again, it took a white man to help a black woman succeed. This is two separate criticisms and the 'needed a man' one I don't agree with any more than the 'why couldn't the prince be black' one but I understand where the arguers are coming from.
2) That Tiana wasn't 'black enough' and instead looks more Latina. Maybe they could have made her darker, like Grace Jones, so I get some of this. From an animation standpoint I get why Disney didn't do it, though. I don't get how she looks Latina at all, however.
