Haystack indeed. Oh and if anyone goes to Cannon Beach. I'd highly recommend staying at the Surfsand hotel. A bit pricey but the romms were phenomenal and the service matched.

I spent the afternoon going through ye olde documents and jewelry with my parents, but my Mom's passport was definitely the most interesting (generally, there were a couple other neat ones like Dad's NYU Student ID).  Here are two photos from it:

Some shots from yesterday of my brother flying a 4.9m power kite. I was dying to have a go but there's no way I could risk it with my back still. I'm aching a LOT today just from running around photographing it, let alone flying it! The lit ones are a single flash with a voice-activated lightstand  


Next time I want 2 lights, for sure!

Honestly I can't tell you much about the kite or flying it, I was just running around shouting "closer!" to my girlfriend with the flash (to which she replied "Fuck off!" usually..). It's all a bit hairy though, there were a couple of times that my brother got dragged along on his face for a bit, both me and my flash-toting gf got kicked once or twice and my bro was very sore and limping quite a lot today.

Worth it though

Awesome. Does 800-1,000ft count as mid-elevation? This was at Twin Falls near Seattle, right inside the Cascades.

Well that'd be the foothills, but you're getting close. I usually think of anything between 1000-3000' as "mid" (ecologically/floristically speaking), but technically anything above 8000' is considered "high altitude". I think the southern Cascades are only about 4000-5000' ASL.

Tussock moths usually aren't much a problem until the mid-elevations. They are nasty defoliating insects and do a lot of damage to forests.

Those catterpillars are cute. But they turn into fucking moths. I hate fucking moths.

I never know which ones turn in to butterflies (which I like) or turn in to fucking moths.

I let my cat out on to the balcony last night - she chased Mothra in to the house. I was not happy.

My grandfather has a terrible habit of not closing the back sliding door and one night mothra came in. It disappeared for a couple days and then one night the huge fucker rammed my head and took up base behind my computer. I donned my glove, henceforth known as GOD WRATH, sprayed the fucker with febreze and then pummeled his fucking face into the ground. I never thought an insect just a bit smaller than my hand could hold so much goo.

I believe the easiest way involves waiting for them to pupate, in which case the woolly ones are moths and the bare chrysalises are butterflies.

I don't get the 'spraying with febreze' part. Is this a slow death? Do you think moths smell bad? I mean, it's a moth. Not likely to be venomous or anything. Just grab it and put it out the window.

Moths who fly in the house here have about the same lifespan as birds who make the same mistake. The time up until the first cat notices them, plus about 12 seconds.
