I'm bastardising the stats to some extent, but I thought it was interesting that while Xbox 360 owners spend (on average) 62% of their time on the console gaming, it is only 49% for PS3 players. Or that a PS3 owner is just as likely to use that console for offline gaming as they are for watching a Blu-Ray movie. Also: Xbox 360 and PS3 owners use their consoles for about 4x longer than Wii owners per week.

We probably use the PS3 to play BR/DVDs ten times as much as we use it for games. And its never been connected to the internet.

Yeah, I'd say about the same, 90+% of the time it's a bluray. I just prefer the pc for gaming.

Yup. Netflix and Hulu streaming and DVDs are all I use mine for. It's a pretty nice media box.

You do have to pay 7 bucks a month, but you get access to the old seasons of a lot of shows. It's worth it to me since I can also watch shows on my iPad while I do dishes, or while stuck in airports on my phone.

The PS3 comes with a BluRay player as standard, and it's a damn good one. Is it really any surprise that more PS3 owners spend more time watching BluRays on their PS3 than 360 owners do?

Hell, my girlfriend uses the Wii for TV/Movies way more than we game on it, well over 90% of its time is used for that since Netflix came to Wii.

I know a lot of people who have bought a PS3 specifically to watch movies, since its processors improved picture quality and it was cheaper than other BluRay players.

PS3 is games/PSN on the HDTV. Occasional Netflix, but it just doesn't look great on HDTV. We don't collect movies, I think my kid has a bluray Disney movie.
Wii is my daughter's games (and my occasional Chocobo's dungeon and little king story) and Netflix on the Standard def. It's easier to stream to the Wii and the standard definition just looks better on standard tv.
PC is all internet and games for me.

360 has always been more of a 'gamey' console. Everything from their online support, to their developers kits, to the shear volume of games available. Sony has caught up as of late, but the monikers are still there.

Much less so on being a good entry-level blu-ray player these days, at least here in Aust where they are doing their best to maintain a $400-500 price point. We recently bought a second BR-player, which cost $90. MS should have gone for an internal BR player with their updated 360. I guess they see the way of the future in digital streaming, not physical media. Especially since their side lost the HD format war..  |

Generally I game on the 360 and if I'm buying a game that comes on both consoles I usually buy it for the 360. Too often the PS3 has weird hitches and frame rate drops that the 360 doesn't have. Add to that the fact that I think Live is a better online component than the PSN and there you have it.
It's a bad ass Blu Ray player though and since I bought the older version I use it to play my PS2 games as well. Honestly, I think dropping PS2 support earned Sony alot of bad feelings from gamers since many people had huge PS2 libraries.

That was really only true around its launch. Now like Azazel said, stand-alone BR players have really come down in price. It's still an excellent player (go go firmware updates!) and probably the best home theater centerpiece you don't have to build yourself, but it's definitely not the "Free Game Console with BR Player" proposition it used to be. |

I watch loads of HD-DVDs on my 360. It was a nice replacement for my Betamax player.
I'm sad to hear that the PS3 is no longer an easy sell as a BR player. That was how I was hoping to end up with 2 current-gen consoles.

Probably 95% of my PS3 time is Netflix or other media streaming while I'm on the computer. The other 5% is Rock Band.  |

I bought a PS3 for games.
Biggest mistake I've ever made. It's been unplugged since I was done with Metal Gear Solid 4, and it's been sitting in the trunk of my car for at least the last 6 months as I try to get rid of it.

My PS3 usage was huge as a media center i'd say 80% of the time.
Lately its been on less and less as Sony hasn't made any improvements to the streaming support (besides netflix/psn store), it's kinda sad they didn't create a hulu type app for it, and never improved media support. I totally stopped using the PS3 for streaming content and switched to a HTPC thats quieter, feature rich and a better experience then the PS3. I have two friends that have totally switched from using their current generation consoles to set top devices(both use boxee) as they are quieter, consume less power, and away from the horror of DNLA.

Any online content providers such as cbs.com, comedynetwork.com, etc. With the PS3/Xbox360 your reliant on a DNLA appliance or a first party application. Yeah on the PS3 you can open the browser navigate to the site and load the content via flash but in the past two years they haven't streamlined the process. A boxee experience pretty can pretty much highlight how sony missed the boat. You sit down hit the tv icon, select a series, select an episode and then select the source. The device then launches the browser and auto full screens the flash content, its pretty much idiot proof. They scrape all the providers/local media and give you the option of which content source you wish to use. Transcoding to DNLA (like vuze/ps3media server/wmp) is the work of the devil and has its own set of issues. |

Doesn't mean you can't use the BR player to "sell" it to your wife/partner/etc. That was one way I helped to convince her that a PS3 would be a great birthday present for me last year, and since she loves watching DVDs and movies, she's been sold on Blu-Rays ever since. |

I FINALLY figured out how to kill the firewall on my RG so my networked PCs could 'see' my consoles. Now I've got 4 PC media boxes and a streaming console in every room. Been tryin out Tversity and it's pretty slick; even streams hulu and youtube. (so I just watched an old HD version of Tron last night... fuck bbuster and netflix) Eventually I'll probably break down and buy a networked multi-TB box to store all this shit in one place. It's amazing how much diskspace you use once you're spoiled by this tech. |
