I think it's a lovely first post.  Usually people complain about something first off or say bad words just to impress our Haemish.  Hardly anyone wishes us a happy something or other and gives us a picture of a present.  (even if it is a crappy bag of random crap)

This one stopped talking, too.

Good first post, though, for the reasons Signe described.

EDIT
What I really like is that after I posted in this one, it went just above the nanobots thread, so the two right next to each other look like this:
For all the wooters out there...
... I'm afraid of nanobots.

One strange, but complete, sentence.

Sorry folks, I tend to not be internet'n on the weekends. Today is a rarity.. But yes, that was a bit of an odd first post.

Let's just say I had no idea how to introduce myself. So I just posted as if I'd been in these forums forever and everyone knew what kind of unders I wear.

schild - sorry to bring my work name into this, but my gamertag has some associations that I'd rather not pop up on google. So I decided against posting as myself. It's a sad, sad world.

So hi everyone. Nice to meet you. Yes, I'm single. No, I don't cyber. No 1337 h4x0rs needed here. Kthx bye. :)

Believe it or not, I don't care if people know who I am in this crazy thing we call the "real" world. You (Yoru) should know that already, since all of my away messages on AIM carry my cell number. Add to that the fact that it's fairly simple to Google map the company, you all ought to know roundabouts where I live.

That said, maybe someday I'll tell you all who I really am... but in the meantime, I'm just the chick with pink hair.

I think my first post was over on SlowNewsDay.net, right after DAoC's release. Roark or whatever that twat's name was (he's changed it a few times since then) was dogging DAoC in a front page post over trivial, absolutely trivial shit. Instead of criticizing its lack of high-level dungeons, he was bitching about... I don't even remember, but it was something really stupid. And he was doing it with the same venom that I would use to attack something like Horizons or Project Entropia. That was the thread where Mark Jacobs had the hissy fit about not posting there anymore, Lum took down the database for a few minutes in a fit of pique, and was the spark that began the rapid decline into Eldin crazy land and spawned Furry2Furry.net.

Goddamn, what a long strange trip it's been.

I seriously can't remember on which board I first posted. My first memory of LtM.net was when I stumbled across an EQ rant that first exposed me to the word "fucktard". I recognized genius when I saw it  :-D

Title: Re: For all the wooters out there...

I remember becoming a Lummie Lurker after seeing a cartoon on Newgrounds back in the late 90s. I'd come and read the articles and their associated threads about once a month or so for a couple years. I read through the Lum departure, the continuation with Arc/Myschyf, the creation and fall of SND at Eldin's hands, the WT.O year-and-change, and then the Splintering that formed F13.

At some point I got bored at work and decided to start posting. I think my first was to an Academy Award thread recommending a film about Hitler. A month later Schild IMs me while I'm playing Eve, finds out I've done "journalism" before, and asks me to write an article. It's history from there.

Pander was the angry flower. I did have a Milk and Cheese avatar here, but not at Lum's. Matter of fact, I think I read LtM once before he joined Mythic, during the EQ years. I didn't really start reading the "rant" scene until Slow News Day.

I don't recall my first post at all.   I do recall how I found L:TM, though.

There used to be an EQ comic called "Evercrest" it's where "Abashi the Sock Puppet" originated.  One day, Drystart (the artist) did a comic about a feud between this guy called Lum and some female UO poster, where she called him a pedophile or something similar.

That was the extent of the comic, so not knowing WTF was going on I did some research and found Lum's site and the chick's site.  Turned out the girl was just irritated at some Japaneese cosplayer posting pics of herself in a Morgan of Darkstalkers costume or somesuch.  Got to reading a few posts, realized the offended female was completly off her rocker and added Lum's site to my frequently visited places.  7 years later, here I am still harassing some of you.

I never posted at Lum's.  I read all his articles though, from fairly early in the UO years until.. well.. now.

After it died, I sort of stayed away for a few years, reading SND, P2P, UnknownPlayer, Corp and such on and off.  Then one day the word "waterthread" somehow showed up in my browser in some context, and I thought it was intriguing (maybe I remembered the water thread from Lum's).  So I found it and started finally posting there.

Title: Re: For all the wooters out there...
Post by: Righ on April 03, 2007, 11:32:47 PM
I bumped into some of the cool kids from Waterthread in Shadowbane beta.

My central memory of that time seems to hang on five or maybe forty patches - or very long crashes - when I left New Haven half loaded, and instead of going to the Bog of the Black Drake, headed out across the plains towards this week's DDH town... absolutely certain that no matter which way I turned I'd find people experiencing as many bugs as I was. No doubt at all about that...

There were terrain bugs in every direction, at any minute. If not across the Swathmoor Swamp, then up the Ivorri Mountains or down to Paundrill Plain... you could sb.exe anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was fun, that we were beta testing...

And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Tyrant and Smedley. Not in any commercial sense; we didn’t need that. Our gaming experience would simply own. There was no point in developing - on our side or theirs. We had all the trebuchets; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave...

So now, less than five years later, you can go to a web site in Ubisoft and scroll down, and with the rose tinted shades you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the waterthread finally broke and rolled back.

I don't even know anymore when or where I started posting. I lurked for about ever and had fun just reading about all the drama without participating in it. I know though that I came to Lum via a link from a web comic. Could even have been Evercrest.

Some of these days I will be glad that I remember what I did yesterday it seems. Damn!

I don't know how I ended up on Waterthread in the first place, but I know I became a regular reader with the Lineage 2 review.

It wasn't until sometime after the migration to f13 that I started posting.

I didn't know anything about Lum the Mad until after the whole Despair&Anguish of Camelot thing.  I wasn't really into MMOs until DAoC and wasn't interested in real game developing until right around the same time.

I'm just wondering what one does with neon pink hair when you go to job interviews.

I generally brush it, even occasionally put it back in a ponytail.

But seriously, nobody cares. Everyone who has talked to me since I dyed has liked it, and those who don't talk to me can sit on a pin.

Oh, and thank you to everyone who has said that they like the pink. I, too, like the pink.

Ah, ok. I've never worked in an...art-type position, so I guess it works differently for you types.

I'd probably get laughed out of the room if I went to an interview with hair like that, but then again, I never stepped foot into the FPA dept. when I was in school.

It all depends on the industry. I work in business software, and we have a very eclectic group. Especially in tech support. Pink hair would get noticed probably, but wouldn't seem that out of the norm.

I remember reading Lum every now and again back in the UO days (I think I got to him from a mention on Stratics). I never even realised there was a forum and probably wouldn't have been too interested if I had. I looked at UO as a game and didn't really get the idea of having a community outside of the game. Once I quite on UO I completely forgot about it and when I got into EQ I started hearing Lum's name again, then I read an interview with him on a webcomic where he mentioned waterthread. I started reading, really liked the community and I think my first post was in the actual Water thread that was going.

Of course that was all under a different username, I got bored a fter a couple of months and decided to come back a bit different. Of course this means I missed out on all the fun drama of the split with P2P and Eldin, etc. but I feel I've seen my share of community hissy fits.

So yeah, dyed hair wouldn't exactly make a ruckus here either.

Visiting just isn't the same as living there.  Having it all right on the other side of your front door.  Hills.  Fog.  Everything you could ever want just a quick Muni ride away (I used to badmouth Muni, but now that I've experienced AC Transit... never again).  It's hard to quantify.  The longer I'm away the more I miss it, though.  I'm thinking once the girl finishes college I might start looking at houses in the Sunset.  [/derail]

I get away with a ponytail despite being against policy (I only found that out a couple weeks ago... funny).  And that's working from law enforcement in SC - can't get a much more conservative culture.  Then again this is also IT, so maybe that's why nobody seems to care when I dress like a hippy.  Pink hair might get nixed for sworn staff, but I can't see anyone else caring.

The furry though... yeah.  I could see an unfriendly sit-down with the boss for someone doing that.

I got grandfathered in on my ponytail, though I haven't dipped my toe into unbound flowing locks at work yet. Actually, I'd probably just keep it in a ponytail because it's better for working. Our previous Director was very strict on our professional look, but somehow I was allowed my long hair, my beard, and I stopped wearing a tie years ago. In a way it makes me a little sad, like I'm an agent of entropy. So I wear suit jackets, even though that was taken out of the dress code years ago (by the previous generation's 'rebel').

Technicalities.
Mom was such a piece if shit I had to eject her from our lives and take her vacant position too. Luckily enough, crossdressing was already my thing, so no biggie. <grin>

Fun part is it won't take long at all before mini-Falconeer comes here bitching about nerfs in Pro Evolution Soccer or why in the hell there's no pre-trammel PvP (that thing dad keeps mumbling about in gloomy rainy winter days) in LoTRO so he could kill those Ring freaks and loot their bodies.

As for Cheddar, knowing his exceedingly subtle vocabulary to describe women, I'm about 100% sure that by using the word "hawt" he meant, she's not a supermodel. I think the word "hot" is saved for regular women. Hence the reason he followed "hawt" with "real person."

Mainly because it's my favourite game ever.

Llava, that was BRILLIANT.

As for Cheddar, knowing his exceedingly subtle vocabulary to describe women, I'm about 100% sure that by using the word "hawt" he meant, she's not a supermodel. I think the word "hot" is saved for regular women. Hence the reason he followed "hawt" with "real person."

Except she's adorable.  If you were MY schild, I would so let her marry you!

(I'm not good with degrees of hot/hawtness.  I pretty much think nearly everyone is adorable.  The pink, however, is extremely adorable.  Even Ironwood with his silly hair and wee tiny ears.   :-P)

No response required on your part, just a "heh" would've done.  I'm pretty sure you didn't hook up the avatar as a reference to... meh, I'm tired of this sentence.

It really is just the angle.. I have quite the tiny nose (or so I'm told). I could post more pics to prove it... but anything that tries to follow a minigun is just asking to be shot down.

Please do, then I can call Ironwood a meanie.

I don't deny it.  I was aiming for funny, forgetting that it doesn't go over at all on the net.  I am teh Dickzor.

Funny... I never expected this thread to go for so long, nor touch on so many topics...

So everyone knows, I don't have internet in my new apartment yet - therefore no posting on the weekend unless I go to work. Which I planned to do on Sunday, until I was reminded that it was Easter and only heathenistic sluts went to work on Easter. Which nearly made me go, just for that, but my sister talked me out of it.

And it's funny that when I first edited my profile, I hadn't noticed that nobody else had a picture of themselves for their avatar. Honestly, I could go find a picture of Washuu or Kemmy or some other anime character with pink hair that properly represents me, but I am not ashamed of how I look. Poke fun at my nose all you want - it doesn't bother me. Hell, poke fun at me for whatever you want. I honestly can't remember the last time I let something posted on a forum irritate me.

As "Richard Ames" says, you're all just figments of my imagination.

My brother already has a few tattoos of his own, but he's saving for another.  I'm pretty much waiting for that, so he can give me the whole rundown on the etiquette and stuff, and for a little moral support.  Never done any sort of piercing or tattoo before, so it's a completely alien world to me.

What are you getting? I almost got the quake logo tatooed on my left biceps. I find myself a couple of years later thinking "omfg that was some stupid shit." Now I'm too scared to get a tatoo, because I'm positive it will sound like a really, really, really bad idea five years later :)

There's a quote by Ovid that says "Omnia mutantur. Nihil interit."  Means "Everything changes. Nothing dies."

I disagree with the second statement.

I'll be getting "Everything changes. Everything dies."

In English, mind you, because I don't speak Latin and think it's silly to get a tattoo in a language you don't speak (unless there's a special circumstance- for instance, if your whole family comes from Spain but you don't speak Spanish, you could still probably get away with a Spanish tattoo).

I'm not fascinated by any particular visual so much that I'd want a tattoo of it, pretty much any tattoos I get (though this is likely to be the only one) would be text of quotes (perhaps altered, if necessary).

That was why I got my tat on my shoulderblade - so I never have to see it and I'll never get tired of it. Plus it's fairly generic yet subtly different (I had a friend draw it for me).

I'll see if I can't con somebody here at work into taking a pic for you.

See, this is how it starts.  First a picture of yourself with pretty pink hair.  Then asking the guys if they want to get a little closer with a picture of your naked shoulder blade.  Before you know it, you've quit your job and you're running your own pay-per-view site called 'Prettiness Desecrated' and getting young fans to hand over the cash for the pleasure of wanking over pictures of you and an unnamed other female with a cucumber and a steady supply of buttplugs.

I'm guessing, of course.

I've never understood why people go to college and study fields that they have no talent for nor interest in.  People do things for some pretty stupid reasons.  FWIW nerve density is pretty low on many areas of the back.  I think some people are motivated by that.  Same great tattoo, less pain.

I happen to have a tribal arm band that I got while doing some volunteer work on a reservation.  I'd almost say that the experience of getting the tattoo was more valuable to me than the art itself.  I also like the fact that having a tattoo tells me a lot about the people around me.  I've often been judged for having it by people that know almost nothing about me.

That's a great secondary effect of having long hair and a beard, too. It quickly weeds out small-minded people.

I was going to get a tattoo, but I wanted it to be meaningful and would sit on any idea for at least a year. If I liked it a year later, I'd get it. Still don't have one. Closest I came was one drunken night on the sunset strip with a merc guitarist my band had for a while. Two tall blond and very drunken musicians stumble in the shop and request the Notre Dame fisticuffs leprechaun. Guy kicked us out for being too drunk, but I think I could've lived with that one.

Other ideas I've rejected are the dancing hula girl and a ship or anchor on my forearm.

Best tattoo I've seen recently was on a girl at the pizza place. "Gun Show" on the inside of her bicep. She's a trip.

Worst tattoo I ever saw was on a young girl waiting tables in a diner/bookstore.  She had 'W-O-R-D" and "G-A-M-E" across her knuckles.

That has to be instantly regrettable.  It's only clever if you're stoned and even then I would imagine it's not worth more than a 'heh'.

I think Cthulhu would be a cool tattoo, but not for me.

Also, Tattoos, not Tattoo's.  Never ever need to use an apostrophe to pluralize anything.

There are some crazy tattoos out there, some of them are really clever and funny, but I'm not going for funny.  I don't want to be a walking punchline (any more than I am, I mean).  I want something that I believe, but that I can still look at as a reminder or for inspiration.  It sounds like a grim message, but that's not how I see it.  For me, it's a reminder on how to live well.  Sometimes I need that.

Also I'm gonna get the Crow makeup tattooed on my face.  I will get soooo many chicks.

Here it is (almost integral.. it's not from her LJ as apparently that post is not there anymore to be seen, so I took it from a quote of a quote of a quote...)

Quote
As my site took off I realized that this wasn't going to be an indefinite situation. I chose pr0n over EQII Dev because 1. It pays better; 2. I don't have to deal with being micromanaged (or managed at all); 3. After the management changed, I hated my job anyway and 4. EQII was going nowhere (and I HATED San Diego to boot). I only accepted the job at SOE because I loved my work in the first place; I took a serious pay cut from working in IT to work there as a fucking forum moderator. I loved it though...I MISS the damn forums sometimes...the haiku, oh my! But the work environment just became the utter suck so /endjob.

Wanna know what turned me off about SOE? Well, first off I watched a girl with NO experience at all get promoted over me because she waggled her tits at her boss. I'm not an office flirt whatsoever and tend to keep to myself, so I totally lost on that front because I wasn't willing to go the hoebag omg-let-me-sit-on-ur-lap route. I was more like "gtf out of my cube and let me work in peace, you fag" so, no promotions for me. Strike one. Strike two was the fact that executive staff at SOE just kept making idiotic decisions and leaving Community Relations to clean up the mess. They outright lied to the customer base on several occasions and made me, who would have preferred to say "yeah we lied, our bad", make up excuses and bullshit that I knew the customer base wouldn't buy. I HATED that. Strike three was the management change. I do not refer to the promotion of Gallenite - that dude was seriously one of my favorite people at the entire company and a total badass to work with - or really to Blackguard either because he busted his ass and really loved the game. Largely it was the "we want more but will give you less to do it with" atmosphere, the 65-fucking-page-long manual on how to be a good Rep written by Raph Koster, having meetings in order to schedule meetings (wtf??) and Brenlo constantly micromanaging everything once he got promoted. Prior to that, I liked him just fine and as a person I still do; I just would never want to work under him again because he wants in on everything and I hate that. All this, coupled with the fact that the job was completely dead-end unless I wanted to flash some titty or work 18 hour days + in unpaid overtime in order to kiss someone's ass hard enough that they would move me onto a different team pretty much killed the magic for me. I still have a good view of the company but yeah...I was just done with it. 2 years with no movement at all? Fuck that. If I have to jiggle my tits in order to get somewhere then I'll do that on my own time where I'll get paid more to do it. Pure logic, that.

So my first day at my first real "corporate job" (OMG! MY OWN CUBICLE!) I was given orientation by the group's administrative assistant.

Bear in mind - first day at first "real" job. I'm nervous as all hell. I want to make a good impression.

The admin asst's orientation consisted of her propping herself on my desk and hiking her skirt so that I could not help but see where she bought her underwear, and asking, in a ludicrously breathy tone of voice, if there was ANYTHING AT ALL she could do, to just LET HER KNOW.

I was in a screaming panic. WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW!!! Like any good prospective salaryman, I froze completely, and she moved on.

Some months later she sued the company for sexual harassment.

Moral of the story: everyone has different perceptions. While I have no clue whatsoever what Ms. Malice was like to work with, I'd take rumors like that with a fairly large grain of salt.

Thread won. FLAWLESS VICTORY.

It's only a flawless victory if it actually happens...

How 'bout this: Ironwood and Lum are right. Shut up.

Thanks.  It was my uncle, mom's oldest brother.  We all knew he was sick, but only knew that it was actually pancreatic cancer for the past five-ish months.  Mom calls on Tuesday last week basically saying "I'm bringing your uncle home from Florida to die," they get back Thursday afternoon, Good Friday I get a call that he's gone.  Total "WTF just happened?" moment.  Then I find out on Easter that the wake is Monday evening and the funeral Tuesday morning.  So I more or less blew off work (with permission) and drove the five hours from Chicagoland to St. Louis on Monday, had the sucky family reunion at a funeral thing happen on Tuesday and then drove back today.  Mostly that it all just seemed to happen so fast.

My one cousin and I were doing fine at the graveside until the military portion (uncle served in Vietnam for two years in the Navy).  That and "Taps" playing just did it for both of us.

My psyche can barely handle f13 in a post format. Live f13'ers in an IRC channel would probably suck the soul right out of my body. A live stream of conversation about Geldon would probably replicate the famous scene from the movie Scanners, and my girlfriend hates carpet stains.

And nobody would recognize my "l33t gamertag" unless they played CS or TFC about the time I was in high school. And then all they would say was "That girl?!?! As for the gamertag thing.. you're aware of how many people play(ed) TFC/CS? Especially 4+ years ago, right? I can't remember 99% of the other people that played DC on the 3FL servers (esp QLD) with me pretty much daily for about 2 years solid. Even if you "fucking pwned the VN boards" or somesuch, I doubt anyone here would know or care about your gamertag.

So, uh, not to be too agressive or rude about it, but noone cares and even less knows. Let's just drop that part and just get back to the general abuse discussion we have around here.

So what does Simutronics make/do? I'm too lazy to google it.

Hero's Journey (http://www.play.net/hj/) - an MMO that's been under development for a while now. The Hero Engine, which is what HJ is built on; it's been licensed by BioWare among others.

They also do a bunch of text MUDs, which is what the company was originally founded on, such as GemStone and DragonRealms. They did pretty well in the 90s by getting the major private online services (e.g. AOL) to pay 'em for providing access to their games free for those services' users.

Gonna be honest. I think she's lying. She name dropped obscure games that even the most elitist gamer wouldn't actually list.

Quote
Top 5 video games of all time?
My recent favorite is Resident Evil 4. Other all time favorites are Prince of Persia Sands of Time, Intelligent Cube, Tekken 3, Incredible Crisis, PaRappa the Rappa and Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

RE4? Ok, still with you.
Sands of Time? THIS IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTION TITLE? WHAT?
Intelligent Qube? Wait. What? That's just a goddamned lie! Yea, great, rarest north american PS1 release. It ranks with Suikoden 2. And sure, it's a good game. Maybe even a great game. Top 5, after listing a survival horror and combat action title? LIAR.

Then it goes downhill.

Tekken 3? ...Tekken Tag maybe?
Parappa? You're reaching.
Ocarina of Time? OK. Now you're like some dicky games journalist who just doesn't want to list Link to the Past because everyone else does. Grow some.

Also, this interview was done in 2005. Alias had already turned to shit.

And the top 5 bands? She was naming top 5 albums. I hope. Killers had only recently dropped Hot Fuss on America. The Shins had 2 albums out, one was shitty. And then, wait, what? Dre, Vega, and Bowie? Is that code for "I don't listen to music but here's what I saw on some programmers iPods."

Yea, I'm being critical. And yea, she's super hot. There's no one on this board that wouldn't wreck a gamer like that, including the women. But don't take us for fools.

Edit: Also, she listed Tetris as something she'd bring if she was stuck on an island. I don't even play it and I'd bring The Sims. Spore if it was out. THINK ABOUT IT.

Anyway, yea, her taste is either questionable or a bunch of lies. I hope it's the latter. Cuz any chick that plays Intelligent Qube gets points.

I'm pretty sure she mentioned Sands of Time because that's basically the development team she's working with.

Anyways, here's another cute producer (don't think she has programming experience like Jade though)

Jade coulda gone with Pandora Tomorrow or Chaos Theory and I would've believed her. But Sands of Time? Yea, it's a great game. But really? Comeon.

I disagree with what you said (in the G.Bob mandick sense) in regards to Ocarina of Time.  It may not be a 100% ironclad pick in everyone's top 5, but I've never seen anyone else go "LOL" when someone DID have it there.  I'd put it at 4 or 5 on my own list.

Nothing post '94 Nintendo would make a top 5 list for me. Or even top 50 (not trying to be sarcastic).

Admittedly, I always thought Sega did cooler things in it's heyday (so it's not like I was a huge Nintendo fan to begin with), but after the SNES, my interests in gaming changed.

You got old!

I used to like resource-strategy games, even played some fairly competively on Kali, and FPSes.  Not to mention the platformers I loved growing up.  Then the reflexes went to hell.

Soooo much of an all-time favorite games list is what platforms you played.  For multiplayer,  my fave FPS is still 1994 Marathon.  Myth is a close second,  and it's still pretty much the only real time tactical game ever put out (though the Total War series does tactical pretty well).

There was no greater high then taking a group of units in Myth nearly identical to other players,  sucking them into a ball in your center,  then enveloping and decimating your opponent.  No learn heuristics as to build order and building placement,  or cheesy build and zerg rush.

I still dabbled with all platforms back then, but yeah, the age thing was probably a big factor in why I moved away from Nintendo.

And as you mentioned, even the Mac had some truly memorable games (gasp!). I liked Marathon and Myth as well.

As far as other things go, the mid 90's in general was fantastic. That was the period of Quake, Resident Evil, Chrono Trigger, WC3, X-Com, Wipeout, Myst, SC2K, LucasArts stuff like Monkey Island and Full Throttle and the XvT series, Fallout, Blade Runner, 2D and 3D fighting games galore, . Among other things.

Not hate. More like overall, general meh-ness with Nintendo after the SNES. Even the Nintendo games I did like in the N64 age (Pilot Wings, MK, Wave Race, or Starfox, for example) were still outclassed by things elsewhere (well, MK wasn't I guess).

RPG wise though, Nintendo has always been outclassed (NES/SNES/N64, doesn't matter). None of that stuff deserves a top spot on a list when there were other games on their own systems that were better (read: Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Ogre Battle if that counts).

[EDIT] Hell, they're outclassed in the side scrolling department too (except genuine platformers like Mario). People aren't nostalgic enough about the Contras, Gunstars, Castlevanias, Mega Mans, and Striders of the world, but Metroid almost always makes the top of side scrolling lists. It's silly.

I'm trying to make sense of this and am just drawing blanks (it's late, forgive me).  Are you making a distinction between games Nintendo developed versus games on their systems from third party developers?

Edit: Liked OoT until the water dungeon.  Beat that one and then quit in disgust hours later.

He sure is. And he's right. Squaresoft, Enix, etc all put out better RPGs than Nintendo ever did. Hell, the best Nintendo RPG came from Squaresoft.

Only 2 genres was Nintendo not outclassed on... on the SNES: Racing and Platformers. HOWEVER, there were an absolute shitload of great platformers on the system. But above all, they had SMW and F-Zero/MK (pick your poison).

That's the thing about opinions, though. Also, different people may not have player certain classics. It depends when you start playing the genre/platform and so forth. I've never Pllayed Thief/2 or Deus Ex, for example.

I'll take the SNES Mario Kart and Twisted Metal 2 over any other racing or combat games from that era. Including F-Zero or any of the many Wipeouts.

Nah, all the games i mentioned are better than similar things that Nintendo did and get infinitely fellated for. Fuck opinions

If they didn't play them at all though, then they shouldn't be saying how the "greatest ever" of anything was ([EDIT] this has nothing to do with Jade Raymond's list btw....I thought we moved away from that).

I agree that Ninty gets needlessly fellated in the games media simply because they're nintendo. Calling something one of your top 5, or your top 10 ever is a different kettle of fish to stating THE best 5/10/whetever games ever, though.

I could understand that for Strazos or Triforcer, for example (they were still tikes when the NES/SNES was out.... I think I recall Triforcer saying he hasn't even actually played the old Zelda titles......even though his name is Triforcer).

so.. clearly she should have been playing the same titles at the same time as you? Maybe she never played a SNES at all. Maybe she didn't start gaming till her teens. Maybe she had a Genesis in her household instead. Maybe her young eyes didn't like the busy look of games like LTTP but she later fell in love with the 3D horse and world of OOT.

I am in my mid-twenties, so I am old enough to have played Link to the Past, Crono Trigger, Final Fantasy V/VI, etc. basically when they came out.  Yes, I did miss out on the Nintendo Zeldas although I play them now on my Wii (Gamecube promotional disc with Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Zelda I/II).

I don't disagree with Link to the Past "slightly" edging out OoT.  I would just put them both in my top 5, along with Final Fantasy VI.  My top five is based only on games I have played, which is heavily Nintendo-based (except for Baldur's Gate 2 and BF 1942, the only other non-MMOs I've invested significant time in).

Wait, are you guys seriously comparing Zelda to Final Fantasy guys as if they are the same genre? WTF?

Zelda games are not RPG's. They are fantasy-based platform/action/puzzle games. The only resemblence to a Final Fantasy type RPG game is that they are both fantasy games. I've always considered them more similar to Mario-style games than RPG's.

And for those saying people my age had to have played Link to the Past, the first Zelda game I played ever was Wind Waker on the Cube. I just wasn't interested back when I had an SNES, and I was working at an EB at the time so could have checked the game out for free. I just didn't care.

For the record, I was not too young for a NES or the original Zelda. I had a NES when I was 4, and beat Zelda when I was 4 or 5 (I only had my father help me with mapping the final dungeon).

Also, I also agree that LttP is the better game, but I still loved OoT. Hell, I even had the LttP guide from Nintendo Power for a year or two before I got the actual game, as I didn't get a SNES until I was 9 or 10.

You can only hear so many 8-14 year old snots whining about the release date of Zelda and Street Fighter 2 before you just don't give a shit anymore.

Also, until really the cel-shading of Wind Waker or the Wiimote controls of Twilight Princess, I never gave a shit for the Zelda gameplay and story. It all felt too "kiddie" to me, which is why Wind Waker still hasn't been played through.

The more I play Windwaker, the more it grows on me.  I find the sailing fun, and my goal now is to get every statuette.

I periodically play (and beat) LttP, OoT, Majora's Mask (a GREAT game that has never gotten the props it deserved), and Wind Waker.  But I never even fucking finished Twilight Princess.  It just doesn't feel Zeldaish to me, and never felt like it got off the rails.  I was hugely disappointed.

I really loved those biplanes. Combat was an Atari favorite. I think I liked Defender and Centipede more though. Centipede is still great.

The Colecovision had a great version of Donkey Kong for it's time. And a really good looking Smurfs game. That's the best thing I remember about it (never had one myself, but my parent's friends did...or their son did rather). During that time, I had a 5200, and Donkey Kong or the Smurfs weren't on it, so I played it for that (on the other hand, the 5200 had great versions of Dig Dug, Pac-Man, Defender, Pole Position, Mario Bros, and Centipede).

The game I probably played the most on the 5200 (and don't remember from the arcade) was River Raid. I'm surprised I can even remember that...

The 5200 didn't last long though. Soon after, I got an NES.

[EDIT] Oh wait, you're still talking about Air Sea. I'm talking about the biplanes in Combat (they had them too....except it was only biplane vs biplane fights. Funny stuff).

Geez, I have a good memory. I remember it being an artillery game or something.... But me and my friend could get it to load right. So I never got around to playing it.

I have those covered too. Defender of the Crown is another one of my favorites from that time (i.e. not a console game).

Wings!

And Cinemaware in general...

I think if I were to make a Top 5 list, it would have to be a series of lists, separated by era. The CGA era, the VGA Era, the Cartridge Era, the Console Era, and the MMOG Era.

Where the hell does Colecovision's TANK! fit in your list? Goddamned infants. Bitching about bump-mapping and anti-aliasing and crap. WE HAD BLOBS THAT WENT PING! AND WE WERE HAPPY!

DOH. I forgot the PONG Era.

EDIT: And forget Combat, all games of the Pong Era paled in comparison to the joy that was Star Raiders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Raiders).

My grandparents had the actual Pong console... Two controllers with just a dial on them, no buttons.

Oh, and that biplane game on Intellevision was awesome. That console got shit on for having weird controlers, but it had outstanding games for the time. Utopia, for example.

I learned addition by playing blackjack on my 2600 as 6 year old, which explains a lot about me today I think.

I really loved those biplanes. Combat was an Atari favorite. I think I liked Defender and Centipede more though. Centipede is still great.
Defender was one of my favorites until the morning I had to get a penicillian shot and couldn't walk so I played it for four hours straight.  I flipped the score then let just let the game kill me.  I had so many extra lives it must have taken ten minutes to end.

For some reason I couldn't bring myself to play it again after that day...

Utopia is one of my favourite game ever. Probably a prototype of the first multiplayer RTS ever. And Intellivision, for all I know, the only gaming system ever to sport a 16 directions pad. Which I loved. Those were the years...
But I could go on with tons of non-console games too. From Zork to M.U.L.E. through Ultima, Archon, Summer Games and Pit Stop well, it was tough to play without a Personal Computer back then. But the list could go on for ages and there would be no way to avoid forgetting stuff. Be it consoles or PCs, videogaming was so exciting.

I had the deluxe Pong version, which had about 6 different Pong-like games including the original. The two controllers were built into this shitty white plastic case. My siblings and I played the fuck out of that thing for years.

Now, if a game lasts 6 months, it's a classic.

Ah yes, Intellivision and early PC days....

Programmers had to rely on gameplay instead of crutches like lifelike graphics.

I miss all the great small software houses that have been ate up by the EAs over time.

Yeah, one part of the game you had a 50 cal and you would mow down people coming at you. They would yell out shit like "I'm hit", "medic!!" ... there was also knife throwing I think, and some other stuff....

That Atari Pong console? Sadly my father gave it away and I got a Sinclair ZX Spectrum instead. At the time I loved that but now the console that made me a gamer would have a place of honor among all my things gaming.

My controllers were brown though, I'm sure about it.

Ah, here it was

Good times that!

My pong was brown, too. A six-game version.

But my first gaming platform was a mainframe :)

[EDIT] Oh wait, you're still talking about Air Sea. I'm talking about the biplanes in Combat (they had them too....except it was only biplane vs biplane fights. Funny stuff).

Combat had the one where three little planes in formation fought the one big plane.  I loved Combat and no one would play with me, either.  Having a pitiful, pitiful ripoff in Wii Play makes me a little happy and a lot sad.

If you ask me, and I know you didn't, I feel OoT outranks LttP by a small margin.  Twilight Princess did not try hard enough to be OoT, or maybe tried too hard to be Okami of Time and failed terribly.

I should try some Majora's Mask again.  I have not had a nightmare about that moon in a long time.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, Jade's list has to be fake.  It smells like an attempt to get some "gamer cred".

Go and try playing them again having played next gen stuff. See which one holds up and turned out to be the b etter game.

Oh yeah, you are right about that.  I am considering it, actually, just need to get LttP loaded onto something.  Your notion of  re-examination of titles is spot-on since there's a lot of nostalgia and state-of-the-artness to worry about.  This is actually why I despise Tetris now, because I have played much better shit in the intervening years.

Zelda....  Which one is best-ever versus which one was the groundbreaker?  To me, OoT was a huge innovation while LttP was just SUPER in execution and polish and even atmosphere (love that intro with the rain), but determining a true winner will require a replay in this millenium.  Hell, I could be saying this same thing about Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, but I am not able to test my hypothesis that Super Metroid would win in 2007.

2D stuff just holds up better. There's nothing uglier than the PS1/Jaguar/N64 era. NOTHING.

The Atari era looked better.

Oh, looks, well I don't know about that.  I was talking more about other things since the graphical division is -- to me -- a given.  Ocarina is pretty homely any way you slice it.

I'm replaying an Open Source port of the 3DO version of Star Control 2. Nirvana.

I love the taste of port.  MMMM.  I don't drink much anymore but if I did the only stuff I would bother to drink would be ice cold martinis in the afternoon and port after supper.

Early Home Console 3-D is horrid, looking back at it now.

Compare Syndicate to Syndicate Wars
Desert/Jungle Strike to Soviet Strike

Or even look back at Twisted Metal 1, as awesome fun as it was at the time, looking at it kills me. Raiden from the same time-frame though, looks as fine as it ever did. Old, but fine.

Console 3D, sure. Computers on the other hand were on a different level. Try launching Driller, Total Eclipse or Castle Master. Or Mercenary, or Damocles. Goosebumps. They were scary even without enemies to fight.
