The Korean site has some interesting footage: http://rf-online.com/I tried the current game trial and got bored of the simplicity, no mob AI whatsoever. But maybe this space battle expansion will make it a "full" game, even enjoyable. Any ideas how it will end up? Space Cowboy 2 something perhaps?

It's a beautiful game, it's a shame that the original release was so poor. I had a good time for a month, but that was mostly just because I kept ahead of the leveling curve and was an indestructible mechabeast due to poor design (Level 39 = weaksauce, level 40 = god).
My favorite feature of RF was the fact that 4 people could run around and kill all of the low level raid boss mobs without suffering a drop penalty for being twice their level. Actually, later on in the game we were able to duo 3 or 4 of the raid bosses, and still got full drop lists of crap. Made us quite rich. Oh and also you could press Alt+Q at any time and instantly log out regardless of being in combat or even in PvP. I don't think I ever died after figuring that one out.

Aren't they (already) going through a server merge?

How did you stand the fact that every mob has the exact same AI? Did you just get super stoned and blast your way through 40 levels? I couldn't even make it 4. You go to field A which has rabbits. You attack them from range and they come directly to you and auto attack. Once you're level 2 you go to field B, which has carrots with legs. You attack them from range and they come directly to you and auto attack. Repeat until you're 40. I bet the raid bosses in that game has some incredibly zany AI. Did they retreat when low on health? Even that would be an improvement from what I remember in this game.

Even that would be an improvement from what I remember in this game. I had goals in that game beyond just playing to have fun. I wanted to try out being a powerhouse in an MMO for once, so I catassed from day one. I wouldn't recommend RF to anyone, and the boss AI wasn't too interesting. They had 4 or 5 minions and there was really no way to manage agro, you simply had to hope that the people who got it could handle it. It wasn't fun in the way that video games are usually fun. It was fun because I was personally controlling a huge portion of the economy, was indestructible in PvP, and had made allies with the other 4 or 5 people that were running the Bellato team. We wouldn't even make a guild for ourselves because we thought it was a waste of money. Mind you, making a guild only cost like... 10 million dalant, and I was personally shuffling around 80+ a day, and they were doing similar. Good times! Alas, it was only fun to play that hard for about a month, and I got out while I could still liquidate my assets into USD before everyone realized how bad the game was.

I think it's more of an asian grind kind..I don't really expect WoW type of raid boss variety. Raid in these sort of games are usually mobs with massive HP that need a tank and 10+ people to gank it for loot. Kinda like Lineage 2 wilderness raid boss.

Very similar to Lineage 2 bosses, but L2 bosses require far more coordination. The primary difference is that RF lacks support classes. All classes are DPS and all classes can heal themselves with potions. In L2 you would need a few healers, a tank, some damage dealers, and in some cases a little crowd control (though not on most bosses). In RF you just kind of run up and wing it while mashing potions.

Well, I'm not a shill. I quit my second trial and have no desire to continue. I got interested if the game would have some fun space ship dogfighting later on, but the core game just ain't interesting enough. I doubt it will be anything better than Space Cowboy. I don't wear lipstick!! ;)

RF Online Doom Clock now officially activated. Dear Citizen,
As some of you already know, Codemasters Online Gaming announced the merging all of the current RF Online servers (Spirit, Fire, Earth, Water and Wind) into one RF Online super server!
This new world known as Novus, will be born on 24th January, 2007 and will go down in RF Online history as the day the worlds collided. The servers will be going offline at 9am NST (GMT) for 12 hours to enable the live merge to take place, with a scheduled launch of Server Novus at 9pm NST (GMT). This server merge will enable players to play the game as it should be played, with mass PvP and the most action-packed Chip Wars ever seen!
It's great how they try to make it sound like a cool feature.

Put the RF Online graphics into a WoW style game, and I would play it in a heartbeat.
Questing, true WSAD movement (not WSAD movement slapped into a true click to move engine), and make it so you don't have to level all your damn skills up (most annoying part), and I would totally be there.
Too bad it will NEVER HAPPEN.

The only thing worth saving is the art. And I think that was an accident, since the style for the zones is incredibly inconsistent.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they start with four servers at release? That would suggest that they had first expanded out before they decided to contract.
RF Online is a simple game, more aesthetic than material. Though it's common to lambaste it on the potion consumption based mechanics, to an extent one can appreciate the not having to rely heavily on a healer, not to mention the soloing capability that brings.
My critique against RF Online would have more to do with the "grind" - the excessive amount of time they expect you to play before unleashing the toys. If memory serves, you are expected to level up for 25 levels before you are granted more than 3 or 4 abilities for your hotkey bar. While the eastern audience might see this as some kind of badge of honor, I just found that annoying.

If I remember correctly they started with 5 servers. The fifth was added just one day before or after release (hence your mistake), but it wasn't so necessary. I was there (I played it on and off for 2 months after release) and 30 days after launch everyone was already asking for server merges. It's an Auto Assault thing.

I still think it was one of the more attractive Korean MMOs. I liked the way equipment looked, and leveling up was really an incentive just to see how badass and huge your next weapon was going to be.
Other than that though, it did not have much going for it.

What does one of the first eastern style MMOGs in the western market mean? By that I mean, no it wasn't, no matter how you slice it. Unless being somewhere, nebulously in the first 20, counts as "one of the first."

Probably just positive spin. It's easier to say than "we bet wrong in thinking an Eastern-themed game with Eastern-style MMO gameplay would appeal to the West when we've had so much history of that so very NOT working prior to it."

It doesn't help that RF wasn't the popular in Korea either (as far as I know), because bad games are bad regardless of the nationality of the players.

I was indestructible in PvP Because of the alt+Q trick? EDIT: I really wanted to play RFO. I loved the Phantasy Star feel of the world, and part of the visual style. It was just as bare as a bone. Not so entertaining, a bone.

Not so entertaining, a bone. Trick? more like outright exploit. I was botting in that game using a custom macro constructed by my friend. Farming currency and selling it. I was afk macroing in a cave one day, and I came back to my desk and saw at least 40 people beating up my MAU. I pressed Alt+Q, waited 15 minutes, logged back in, and kept botting. Brooooooken.
