In other people's guilds I've twice seen "My brother, who played Wow, has died" leading to "meeting his online friends to understand why he spent so much time in this game", then to "coming along on a raid to see what he did", then the next raid, and the next, etc. "Isn't it nice that his brother took over Andy's account?" ... with a clean reputation, sympathy, lots of attention, and forgiveness for the things Andy said. And STFU Tale, what are you implying, don't you have a heart?

I'm pretty suspicious about all these "The person whose account this is has died" posts too. I think they are mostly just sad people who want some attention and sympathy. The odds of a family member knowing about WoW, knowing the person's login id and password, giving a shit what a bunch of people on the internet thought of their deceased loved one and then actually caring enough to login and make a statement are extremely low. One in a million. So I guess there should only be about seven of these .

I think the funniest thing about that post is that the reply was filed by a level 1. Probably an alt someone rolled up just to make snide comments with. Prank Mule.

If you are a bed ridden leukemic, perhaps instead of watching TV you might play a game called World of Warcraft so you can have a "social life" and pretend to be a healthy person and live an imagined life. Or you could be someone who wants lots of attention. I've seen it done both ways.

I have a friend named Joy (internet friend-never met her in RL) that was the leader of our EQ guild for years. She's moved on to EQ2 with some other mates. She's got some rather hefty diseases that have taken her to the Mayo Clinic a few times. I can absolutely see where someone in a bad physical condition would see MMOG's as a great outlet. They can socialize in the virtual world in ways they'd never be able to in the real. Joy wasn't completely bed-ridden but was sick enough that even letting the dog out was a bit of a chore. Dickens was his name and was a regular topic of discussion ingame. AFK was replaced by OWD (out with Dickens). :)

Where did I say I was doubtful that sick people play WoW? I never said that. I said I was suspicious that their surviving relatives would take their places.

Yeah, totally. If the wife is cracked up with Grief, I would expect her to pack in my account and not nick my fucking epix.

Agreed, my family and friends pretty much don't want any part of my online gaming, nor would they worry about my accounts if I died. I think that's pretty common across the board for people playing these games with a few rare exceptions.

I think it depends.
I think if you dont understand your child or sibling that well, and you know they have friends on an online game then you might struggle to understand in the period of grieving.
I have friends I know over the internet, and I expect if I died that my parents might want to contact them to let them know. But none of them are in WoW, and unless you're the kind of person who obviously has a lot of really close friends through the game, and your parents know that, then I doubt they'd bother. I know my parents certainly wouldn't bother to play the game (though my brother is welcome to have my characters).

Hmmm. Normally I wouldn't have expected any relation of mine to let you people know. But since meetings in person have taken place, I would imagine Christine would make some type of post.
I would counsel her to logoff the minute she'd posted tho. It could get nasty.

Which is another interesting pointer into the whole idea of someone 'dying' while their brother plays his account. I have 4 brothers and I'd actually have to be dead and buried before I'd let them near one of my game accounts. These things are usually always bollocks and it sucks for the occasional person who is actually looking for support on the internet, but really, tough fucking titty. If you're looking for validation of your loved one through the fucking online gaming community, then you have more problems than I can deal with and your 'other' is probably better off dead.
