I never understood the huge feeling to move out when you turn 18. Seriously, how are you going to live at 18, just out of high school (maybe)? Maybe my standards are out of whack, but I'm thinking the conditions are going to be kind of shitty (on average).
Seriously, I don't even know how that shit works these days. Is college even in the picture? If not, you better have a few other options to try out.

Student loans and credit cards had me eating ramen, chili, and mac&cheese while living in a dorm room.
I wasn't in a hurry to get out of the house (I'm good friends with my parents), but it's kind of hard to go to college in another city if you don't. :-D
For the non-collegiate folks out there.. I assume they get jobs?

More like 2 jobs. Sometimes even 3. Sometimes 1 with a pot dealing job on the side ;). Everyone I've known that went to college still had to work fulltime somewhere as well. 20 somethings should never have to experience that much stress. Hell, 20 somethings shouldn't have to experience stress. Period.

You're forgetting that college tends to put folks in 40, 30, or $20,000 of debt as well. Thereby curtailing many other goals.

Are you really about to pull out Boog's "College is for suckers" argument? Hell, 20 somethings shouldn't have to experience stress. Period. Nobody should have to experience stress. We should all just live in happiness and peace with lollypops and unicorns and rainbows. Too bad that ain't life. "Childhood" as an excuse keeps getting pushed later and later and "oh you're just a kid" is now being applied to folks 25 and beyond. I don't know wether to be fucking sad at such bullshit, or happy to live in a country where we have the obscene luxury of actually being able to apply the excuse to folks who'd be dead elsewhere.

You take the shitty job and get on with your life. I'm not quite sure what you're trying to argue here. Yes, that option is less desirable. The trade school/community college route is pretty much open to just about anyone that isn't technically retarded. edit: No offense (ok, you're likely to take offense), but you and Stray are coming off as a bunch of whiney babies.

I think 20 is a perfectly reasonable age to still be living with one's parents. I don't think the girlfriend should live with your parents in addition.
I didn't move out until I was 21, as a result I had a decent amount of money saved up and pretty good credit, could get a good loan at a good rate and I'm living in a condo I can afford myself at a greater level of comfort than many of my friends who work much harder than me and are barely scraping by in apartments living with significant others or roommates, building no equity, where they are essentially stuck until... well, I don't know what's going to come along and solve their problems, but it won't be for a while.

Are you really about to pull out Boog's "College is for suckers" argument? Uh... Go away for awhile. Have a drink. Chill out. I'm merely stating that people put themselves in heavy debt after school (and I was being moderate with the numbers)....And that even college graduates, who are far better off than h.s. grads, might need help. It had nothing to do with Boog or my opinions on the education system. [/quote] It has nothing to do with "Childhood" excuses. I'm just saying that it's completely unnecessary to carry the world on your shoulders right away. No one should really have to get two jobs, let alone three, just to survive. At that point, "stress" outweighs the whole "independence" ideal. People would be better off living within a more communal/tribal/familial existence, pooling their resources (which is exactly what many people do all over the world....contrary to what you think "life" is).

Bleh, edits while I was typing. Suffice to say, I just mean that moving out so you can feel mature...or something, is a stupid fucking idea. If you're in your 20s, and temporarily living with your parents, I don't see the problem. Still living with them at 40...eh...well, I don't care, but it's certainly not normal. Don't shortchange your life just to move out.
And Stray, I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue with loan numbers. Yes, school costs money (usually). It's not like you owe it all at once. And besides, isn't the point of higher education to enable people to get good jobs, and not have to really sweat those loans?

I probably make just as much cash as most of people here. Some of which are 5 to 10 years older than me. I made even more in my early twenties (sad, but true). I'm not whining about anything. I just think the whole "independence" ideal can be overrated and counterproductive at times.

Most people aren't making more than 25-30k out of college. Some not even that. Some loans accumulate into huge numbers if not paid off quickly enough as well. It's just another thing to worry about, stacked on top of everything else, is all I'm saying. Besides that, you never know what people are going through. They could be going through divorce, they might have a kid or two by then, they might have a lot of medical expenses for some reason, their car might have been totaled, they have to take care of ill or elderly family members, etc.. People live with their "parents" (ooh...such a bad, bad word) for any number reasons.

What kind of colleges are we talking about here, because 25-30k is absolutely abysmal.

You're living in Jersey, where even the sewage infested ghettos might come close in price to moderately comfortable suburbs elsewhere.
Still absymal though. An introductory teacher's salary in Texas (say, for a recent graduate with an English degree) is somewhere around $27k (and that's with a recent pay raise). If they're lucky, and not completely insane in 10-15 years, they might make $40k.

Even more reason to live with the rents. Fuck the whole "independence" thing, because that would just be more bills.

I have to agree with those saying she should not get implants, not that I believe it will sway your fiancée. I can understand the desire, implants just aren't worth the risks to me, and it is a lot healthier to accept oneself for whom they are if possible.
That said, being accepting can be difficult, and I do not think cosmetic surgery is bad if a significant amount of thought is put into it. Casting stones and all.

Totally agree but then, I can remember being invincible at 19. Just barely.

My thoughts.
1) People will think nothing of dropping 30k on a car but they hesitate to spend it on an education. W T F? You are the best thing you can invest in.
2) An education may not guarantee a good job, but it does protect against an even lower glass ceiling.
3) Do what you're passionate about. That will take you further than any degree will. In some cases (like mine) a degree is required to get there.
I wouldn't want to be 20 again for all the money in the world. Good luck!

About living with your parents. Living and leeching are very different. A lot of people move back in with their parents even after college now. That in itself is not a big deal. Now if you live with your parents, don't help them out at all, don't have a job and sit in the basement smoking up then yes, that is pretty lame.
I for one could not live with either parent (divorced) for longer than two days with out going completely insane.

Look, I linked a video that was pretty damn borderline for Youtube. There were hard nips. Xboxgod showed us his to-be's ass. Then something very non-magical happened. Let's get with the program here, people! A man deserves T&A on his birthday, if no other time. Everyone can still point out, rightly so, that Xboxy has the rest of his life to get married and doesn't have to rush into things, but let's try to maintain some focus. There is also plenty of time for us to console him on his divorce in two or three years as we get together to play Duke Nukem Forever Online In Space.

The vast, vast majority of people I know who got married very young (i.e. before they were 25) ultimately rued the day.
Oh, and now that I hang around with 19 year olds all day every day I can say that that ass isn't that exceptional. They all seem to be like that. Oh, if I only knew then what I know now...

You are correct, yet so very, very wrong. It's not exceptional for what it is, it's exceptional because it's here. 3 years, it'll start to sag. Le Sigh.
