Don't even joke about that Nebu. Every time I come back from southern Europe I go into an existential tailspin of culinary depression for two months at least.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

It was in Tuscany, so no. We hit Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, and Volterra.

How'd you like it?  That's one of the places I am interested in going for my next big trip.

I would say that it would take a long time to get tired of the sights, sounds, and tastes of Florence. If I was going back to Siena, I would do it during July or August so I could see the famous Palio (a crazy horserace) that they are absolutely batshit crazy about. I'm not kidding, get a local guilde and then get them to explain how huge the Palio is to the neighborhoods of Siena, and it will blow your mind.

I'd skip San Gimignano as it's like Italy run by Disneyland, a total tourist trap. Volterra is old and cool with great food. Hell, there's great food everywhere, but make sure you go to the small towns after 8PM for dinners. That's when the action starts. All in all, it was an excellent trip, and if you like countryside vistas, medieval cities on hills, towers, great architecture and history, then it's absolutely a must.

Cool. Georgetown has a villa in Fiesole (used to be one of the Rockefeller's) that I want to stay in.  They have 11 day programs where you get taken around by professors to Florence and and surrounding area. It's mucho expensive though so I will need to save up.

Eh, I liked Sam Gimignano enough, pretty part of Tuscany...though I wouldn't bother buying a whole lot. We stopped in on our way back to Rome from Florence.

Florence is really awesome.  Especially if you like art.  See some Bernini.  Cry as you fully realize your own inadequacy.

I spent part of a winter outside Atlanta in the mid 90s, watching the whole town shut down for days when it was 20F and 2" of snow was great fun. Seeing kids without coats waiting for the bus? Not so fun.
The kids next door were out this morning as I drove to the vet waiting, they all looked like Michelin Men. Ready for -1F

Yeah, never quite dipped that low in my house last night. Walking in from a morning at our dysfunctional modern HVAC balanced zone nonsense to an actual warm house (about 80, because the morning logs were peaking their coals cycle)...awesome. Stoked it, filled it, looking forward to a nice toasty evening around the house. Given the length of this cold snap, I should be running the stove enough 24 hrs/day to start warming the floor tiles at the far end of the house.

My only regret (I may have mentioned this a dozen times): not putting in radiant floor heat. Standing on the hearth stone of the stove and letting the heat soak up into your cold feet is almost sexual.

We're getting robbed on the snow, though. All the lake effect bands are pounding regions that aren't here. Dammit. I fucking love winter, always have since I was a kid and used to stay outside adventuring through the woods in a snowstorm all day long.

I almost choked on my diet coke this morning when I overheard a graduate student state that global warming was a myth because it's really cold in Minnesota.

How do people get degrees in science with this kind of thinking?

Gaming the system. Opposite reason of why I am an intelligent person with a predilection for science and nary a degree (first try was for a biochem degree in 89).

Does anyone else find it funny that there are posters in the Eve subforum with over 1000 posts, that I've never even heard of?

I think it may be more interesting that there are people that lurk on this board that have been members since 2005 and have 0 posts.

Yeah, yesterday.  I had TWO burst pipes in pretty much the same place.  Once I removed the entire floor of my bathroom, it was clear that the original builders hadn't even lagged the pipes.  You know, the ones that go to the front and coldest part of the house, beside the stone, under the ground, near the air vents leading directly outside.

Cunts.

Anyway, it's all fixed now and I took a massive bath yesterday, but I still have a huge hole in the downstairs bathroom floor;  Got a guy coming in on Monday to do it all mates rates - we only have to pay for the laminate.  I was annoyed about that until I remembered the two boxes of unopened spare laminate under the stairs.

Despite the happy ending, it's a week I don't want again, nor would wish on anyone.

Thanks for asking.
