Congrats to your friend Mark, losing 213 pounds is amazing. He more than halved his weight. I'm glad he's going to enjoy a longer, happier life now with $100k to boot!

Somewhere around:  428 -> 208 though I can't remember exactly.  He lost over 50% of his body weight.

Wow.  That's amazing.  You'll have to monitor him and see if he has a rebound.  Most obese folks do when they lose that much weight.

Sadly true.  My cousin got gastro bypass a few years ago and has since put back most of the weight he lost.   You really have to keep focused on lifestyle and diet changes to make things stick.

Even with the lifestyle changes, I think there is something else going on.  Maybe it's food but there is something biochemically different about people that weight 3-400 pounds or more.  My attorney probably weighs 450 pounds and he doesn't eat all that much when we go out to lunch.  I guess he could be packing away a case of beer every night, but I know people that do that and they don't weigh that much.

(puts on counselor hat)

While genetic and lifestyle issues can contribute to morbid obesity, generally there's some psychological issues going on at the same time.  Both with myself and others I've known who have been morbidly obese, it often seems to be a defense mechanism to "insulate" one's self from various aspects of life.  Addressing the fundamental issues often leads to a corresponding reduction in weight, but one must be somewhat attentive to maintain the loss.

I wish, I saw him in september at our fantasy football draft (labor day weekend), and he wasn't anywhere near as in shape as he is now.  Big changes from Sept->Dec.  It was pretty funny seeing him eating chicken breasts and seltzer water at the bar.

Don't you live in Richmond? Snow that falls 2 weeks before Christmas will never stay long enough to be anything but "grey and muddy christmas" if anything stays at all.

The fiancee got a chuckle out of me scraping the 2" of snow off the driveway. Want moar snows! Snowthrower hungry!

This little dusting here and there crap when we get brushed by the edge of the lake effect band is such a tease. For those not familiar with NY, the Great Lakes shoot off a band of snow with the prevailing winds coming SE from Canadia, regardless of any actual snow storms in the area, that band can just pound huge swaths of upstate NY with awesomeness. Unless it's too far north or south, dammit.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

If you mean against other human beings, no.  I do have both and 80 pound and 40 pound heavy bag in my basement that I have been using for kickboxing for the last couple of years.  Does that count?

My sister does kickboxing and it's worked out really well for her. I would say any form of kickboxing or boxing that involves a heavy bag workout will kick your ass if you do it for an hour. Get a trainer, go regularly, and you will be in shape in no time. (I did some boxing with a trainer at the local gym before switching jobs).

I've been a weight lifter for a while, on and off of course, and just stopped in favor of taking kickboxing classes.  Not for fighting but general cardio workouts.  Just curious to see if anyone has done something like that long term in a serious fashion.

I've been doing it for a month and a half, 3x a week at an hour per class.  I've lost weight and gotten in shape.  I want to know what kind of shape it gets you in.

It's all about the type of build that you want.  The easiest way to keep your body fat % down is weight training.

Well, I never do any cardio for an hour (because at its core, I fucking hate cardio), so mine always ends up being like 20 minutes 7 times a week.  My observations:
-Even more so than most exercises, you have to be really self motivated.  It's easy to go through the motions and get little or nothing out of it, easier than with other things.
-When you put a lot into it, however, it's an extremely good workout.  Extremely.
-If you're doing it right, the most obvious result you'll see, other than the general result of better cardio and some weight loss, is increased speed and flexibility.
-It's loads more enjoyable than pretty much every other form of cardio.

I know all about that, I just want some personal stories that are from people and not the random internets.  I expect to gain lean muscle mass rather than bulk.

We'll see.

I suspect I know what you are really trying to say...but you either put on muscle, or you don't.  There is no lean or bulk.  If you have any muscle on you at all from your weight lifting days, all this is going to do is start breaking down that muscle until you have less of it.  So if that's what you mean by "lean", then sure.

Bad words then?  I mean basically instead of gaining large muscle mass an ripping my shirt due to my awesomeness, my body will become "leaner" since I won't be adding additional weight to sit ups, pushups, and punches.

That's what I expect anyway.  I haven't done anything like this before so I expect my body to look different after three months of this type of exercise vs. three months of weight training.

It will make you "lean" in a way that any serious cardio (combined with diet) will make you lean...you're going to lose muscle and fat.  I suppose you may add back tiny amounts in certain places in your arms or legs, but if you already have good muscle structure on your body, you are really just going to be losing it for all intents.  So yeah, the more more you do it, the leaner you are going to appear.

I looked like a starving refuge when I was a truck unloader, but I could lift staggering amounts of weight and toss it around. I used to get a little frustrated I was so skinny, but being constantly underestimated was fun.
