Libraries are going away. Hope you enjoyed them.
Care to elaborate? Not aware of what's going on the Sky's world, but here in Glendale, AZ, the libraries have become part-time operations — only open ~30 hours per week, closed Sundays and Thursdays, only open for half a day on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays… …no money for such luxuries, when they're professional sports complexes awash in red ink, preparing for vacancies and "going out of business" action.

This. Basically no money or funding for them as the public doesn't use them outside of graduate students at major research libraries at universities (and even those have problems). The days of kids going to the library on a Saturday and checking out a book or two are over.

The days of kids going to the library on a Saturday and checking out a book or two are over. Actually, they're heavily trafficked, though a large part of that is the computers with internet access (separate setups for youths) — 40+ machines and your sessions will rationed to an hour or two I believe, free WiFi, DVD movie library with lots of current movies (though get there early, because they only have a copy or two of a movie). I see kids toting books about too. Lots of parents and kids and stacks of books… Since the economic downturn, usage has grown even more. But, unfortunately, coinciding with library cutbacks. Really dismaying, especially when the city needlessly spent over $3M in 2009 on a bridge project to alleviate a “creek” crossing that washes out maybe once or twice a year. Despite the fact that during these rare occurrences, the obstacle is rather easily circumnavigated, with multiple alternate routes located less than a mile away (one choice is perhaps 300 yards away). And it’s the very road this library is located on.

They're also a hugely important resource for the unemployed in a lot of ways, which seems just a bit relevant these days.

I go to my local library fairly regularly and I'm frequently surprised at how many kids are in there. And in looking up the branch website to see how often they're open (44 hours per week), I saw that they had a Guitar Hero tournament last week to celebrate "books with beats". Awesome.

I seem to have misplaced my Majora's Mask cart. /sadf
I heard there's a guy selling one in a garage sale.. want it? How much? Just your sanity. On the libraries.. it doesn't matter how used or unused they are. "Someone else can pay for it, I pay enough as it is!" is the rote answer to most funding when it comes to levies or taxes, never mind how much locals actually use it. Cops are going away next, then public highways and paved roads. I'm a fatalist, though.

So what does a federal background check get into? Thinking about applying to DHS.
Depends on level of security. Anywhere from "We trust what you put on this form and verified your high school/college" to a Full Scope Polygraph whereby they chart your entire life and dig up stuff you completely forgot about.
|
No Nerf, but I put a link to this very thread and I said that you all can guarantee for my purity. I even mentioned your case, and see if they can take a look at your lawn from a Michigan perspective.

What Cheddar said, also it was taking like six months to a year for checks last I looked, 9/11 made them a bit more careful.

I meant more like what would be a red flag. Not sure how much Uncle Sam likes graduates of Hard Knocks. Would be a northern border posting.

Have you ever been associated with any anti-American groups? Have you done drugs in the past seven years? Do you have a lot of debt? Do you have any addictions? Do you have anything in your past someone could blackmail you about?

Lying about anything on your application form is a big red flag in the UK. Speeding fines, any brushes with the law etc should all be declared in full.

She was pant-creamingly hot back in the day. I remember when Basic Instinct came out. Holy shit.
But yeah, we don't need to see this anymore.

I've never been a huge fan of Sharon, but this one made me almost lose my lunch.
Why? Have you seen what most women look like at 52? She looks amazing! Go Sharon!

I don't know, she's just never been that attractive to me. As for the current photo, maybe it's the cigs crammed into her crotch. Ewwww.

You know, I saw this and it made me think about how much damage the internet is doing to so many forms of art and industry: music, books, journalism, television, and so on. We haven't seen this big of an upheaval to the basic workings of society since the printing press was invented, or possibly television.
