So - Looks like I will indeed be showing up as a potential juror tomorrow.  Which mostly means sitting around with a bunch of other bored people for an entire day waiting to be called only to be rejected.

I just did jury duty about a month ago.  I wait in the jury assembly room.  We go up stairs and I randomly get placed near the end of the queue for their questioning.  They ask a bunch of questions, people get excused and people are dismissed.  They're on what they say is the last question.  A guy that works as a prison guard gets dismissed.  And... I get called in as a replacement.  Then after answering all of their questions, the lawyers do their picking and I get picked.  YAY.

Luckily it was a only about a day and a half trial.  Dude consents to a search and has meth in his pocket. OOPS.  It was a pretty interesting look at our legal system, and I was glad I was able to take part in it.  Plus, I was the foreman.  I could do that for a living. I was good at that shit.

Almost got picked but rejected by the defense at the last minute.  Guess she didn't like her chances with a middle aged white male  wearing a tie and sportscoat.  Looked to be an interesting case - 4 counts of illegal firearm possession and 2 counts illegal controlled substances.

So now its back to waiting in the assembly room since the summons is for one full day or one complete trial.

I don't know why people hate jury duty.  The commute, probably, but otherwise it's like a vacation.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I suppose it depends on your employer.  I'm on salary and they didn't care as long as my projects were fine.  It was like a big educational field trip.

Since it wasn't mentioned - Boxing Day is a British/Canadian holiday on Dec 26th. It is also our equivilent to Black Friday.

When I was little, I assumed there were important fights that happened that day.

It's considered PTO for me and hell, the courthouse is just on the other side of town, so definitely no downside for me.  Heck, a friend of my works near the courthouse, so she even hooked me up with a parking pass, so I didn't even have to pay for a garage.

I enjoyed it - sure, it's a bit of a boring day, but going through the process of it is definitely educational and really enjoyable if you don't get yourself all worked up about it.

Looks like there might be a "great" new tax in NY. Patterson is making everyone shit themselves with his new budget. NY is about to become the worst state to live in. Rejoice, Haemmy. Anyway, new tax is on internet-purchased music, but may be worded to include downloaded games (the article mentions Valve specifically):  http://tinyurl.com/4sw35n

I'm not sure where your link goes,  but couldn't find the article.

New York has been pushing the "Amazon Law":  http://www.kiplinger.com/businessresource/forecast/archive/Copying_New_York_Amazon_Law_080513.html

Basically,  moving from a "physical presence" test for collection of sales and use tax to an "economic presence" test to determine nexus.

I'm actually in favor of collecting sales and use tax on internet purchases,  though this implementation (partial by state,  not untangling the county/municapality/state sales tax regs into a universal US system) sucks.  Right now,  internet sellers exemption from sales tax is basically a subsidy to internet sellers over brick and mortar locations.

Driving, going to unknown places, and people are my largest fears and at times physically debilitating.  Going to jury duty is like living out a horror movie.

Further, I'm not going to lie about my views.  While it will get me thrown off most jury panels, my views tend to be unconventional.  Being forced to state them publicly can get a little uncomfortable (beyond the social anxiety).  Like the last time where I was one of two people who thought the State shouldn't be making arrests for prostitution.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

I like jury duty as well. I get out of work and usually get the hear the case of people with worse lives than mine. It's like Springer, only I'm a good citizen for watching it!

Weirdly enough, both juries I've served on have been for cases involving fondling a child.

Good thing I have an oral presentation about Shakespeare in 12 hours.

Are you presenting it in the original language?
That was my plan. But it got delayed to January 17th.

Any Shakespeare buffs here ? I will have to talk about the character of Iago in "Othello"

Same problem here.  I was the only one who didn't think that the state should be prosecuting when the victim declined to press charges on what amounted to a noise violation being turned into a domestic assault\"public" intoxication in their house charge.  I still had to wait until 4:45 to be allowed to leave and go home, when he judge was threatening to bring us all back again the next day if the lawyers couldn't agree on jurors.

Sure, somewhat. Not a historian or anything. Just a drama fan/half-assed nut.

Iago is Smithers, if he acted like Mr. Burns.

[edit] Gay like Smithers too.

[edit] OK, that's not fair.

I'll give $50 to the person that can come up with a good name for a site that sends you alerts when your fav band/artist or author releases a new album/book.

squee.com is already taken!

Yah most of the good ones seem to be camped by someone. Lamers. I think I can get one specifically for books and one specifically for music, I'm having a hard time coming up with a more general name that would work as an umbrella for both.

Think outside the box - as in stop thinking about books and music. If I had anything appropriate I'd probably just give it to you, but I've let about 30 names lapse since I left GoDaddy.

That was the idea being behind 'squee.com'. (look it up if you don't know what it is). But it's hard coming up with random crap that's not lame or taken. I've run into a mental block on the fanboy angle.

Speaking of another "sq" word, squib.com could work -- someone's sitting on it, but maybe it's cheap.

Oddly, plug.net is being sat on too. You'd think that'd be in real use.

i haven't used it in awhile but if you are looking for ideas it may help to look at what is expiring:

snapnames (be sure and select advanced search)

it's worth $60-$80 if you see something that works for you.

I guess I'd never thought of that. The only reason I was chosen for the second case was that the judge was filling two juries - one for the fondling case, the other for a case involving a couple suing their home builder for fucked up stucco. One of the lawyers asked if the jurors felt that corporations should have the same legal standing as an individual, and I explained why I didn't believe that. Strangely enough, they didn't pick me for that one.

This season always warms my heart.

Something about watching people fight over a parking spot and nearly kill each other as they enter the already crowded stores to hastily purchase un-needed and possibly unwanted gifts for their loved ones just makes me smile.
