I had to explain to a professional builder today that masonite is not a proper term for fiber cement board, that masonite is it's own thing entirely different. And have him get all shitty and tell me he's a professional and he knows what shit is called, and hardie panel fiber cement board is called masonite.
Plus, he was dressed like a hipster douchebag.
Might be time to get a new builder there Rattran. In my experience that sort of ignorance can cost *you* a whole bunch of money. There is no *might* about it. Tell him he's fired and go find someone who knows the difference between fiber cement board and pressed wood. Wtf is he going to put masonite behind your shower or on your exterior? Aaghh. The guy is a moron, you should run far away from anything he builds as he will probably use the wrong materials for everything and endanger your life. Material trivia: the non-trade name for Masonite is "hardboard".

Reminds me of a German? general talking about officers...
There are 4 types of officers , each share two of the following traits: Smart or Dumb, Lazy or Industrious.
The smart and lazy are well suited to command because they will delegate.
The smart and industrious are perfect for staff work.
The dumb and lazy can be assigned to areas where they do no damage.
The dumb and industrious however are highly dangerous and must be removed immediately.

I have 4 years left to pay off my student loans
what Undergrad, Grad, and med school aren't cheap. Especially when you come from poverty and have to pay the bills yourself. I'm not even going to mention the loans I took out to help my ex pay for med school. Alright, I've hinted at it before but I respect the work you are doing. Small consolation I'm sure.

I've been semi-retired my whole career. I can't fathom working as much as some of you people do. I mean, the same job, every day, 5 days a week? Seems like madness.
I do different things at different times. That's one of the reasons I have a hard time explaining my job to someone that doesn't understand enterprise computing. Sometimes it does get pretty boring, though.

Thanks, but truth be told, I'm no longer doing work with the kind of impact I used to. I got pretty burned out on the whole academic research grind 6 years ago and left a job at a research I school for a lower profile place. I'm still doing NIH funded research, but at a much slower pace. My life and family are far more important to me than selling my soul to research. It just got too political for me.

A bitcoin bank opened to the public today but they require users give their real names?
Doesn't that bring the value of a bitcoin down to $0? Wasn't anonymity the only real upside?

Yes. But they're also gaining legitimacy now as Paypal will accept them. Which also requires real names.
Which is how you know they're on the deathslide. Regulation will come next and then they'll have completed the cycle of bearer bonds before them.

Back from China. Foreign country is foreign. But hey, I got to play with pandas, both the red and the giant kind. The trip was actually kind of awesome. I recommend everyone go at least once in their life, if possible. Have a random panda pic! The sanctuary was really neat; the fences all have holes in them and so you can find them just wandering around on the walks.

Well huh. A regular panda can kill the shit out of you, but no hugging the red pandas? Fierce? That doesn't mesh with the historical data I have on the subject (F13 gifs).

So have have three classes left to graduate. I'm taking two now, stats and my advanced JavaScript. My final project/capstone class is in the Winter.
I'm really disappointed that this stats class is taking 2/3 of my study time when my major is Web Development. I should be spending the majority of time in say, you know, my fucking major. But no, I have to spend my time pushing shit into my brain that I'll only retain 1/4 after the next 12 weeks.
I'm not discounting the importance of statistics, but there's a fundamental problem when the class in my major can't be worked on as much as I want because of weed-out courses. My software/web development classes have been awesome, otherwise the process of getting a degree has been an expensive exercise in bullshit.
I can't help but say this will serve you in good stead when your operations guys don't have to drag out and shoot another fucking jackass developer who can't statistics for shit.

I like how statistics was used as a verb, an angry verb. I can't think of a single instance of how statistics has helped me program something. Unless you are writing a statistics calculating program or another damn poker game website screw statistics.
Remembering to seed the random number generator with the current time in millis instead of a static value is a programming rule, not statistics.

So, my mother (who watches my kids during the day) tripped over a baby gate last night as my wife was leaving after picking up the kids. She told my wife she thought she was OK. 30 minutes later I get a text from my sister (who is living with my mom atm) that she got home and found mom nearly in tears from knee pain, so she took her to the urgent care. Long story short, she broke her fucking kneecap and is in surgery right now to get it wired up. Thankfully she will be on crutches instead of a wheelchair, since there is always the chance at her age that she wouldn't get out of it again. No idea if she is going to be able to chase my kids around, or drive, or anything. It sucks watching your parents get old

Mine didn't require surgery (luckily) but recovery sucked. Tell her that she needs to do the exercises the physical therapist gives her and not blow them off. I was not as dilligent as I should have been and it took me longer than it should have to get full range of motion and strength back.

So I'm growing a beard. I've never bothered before but had a few months off sick so used the opportunity to start. Although I won't admit it too loudly I kinda like that hipster full beard thing or a big metal beard and day by day its getting longer. The problem is, I'm mixed race and somewhat dark, and the bigger and longer it gets I look less like a rugged Victorian explorer, and more like a mad Arabic exploder. Similary dreams of neat lines and carefully waxed tache have been been broken that the reality it bristles and curls, oh and lots of grey. What i wanted What I got.

I've been trying to get the hipster/full metal beard going lately as well. I'm not entirely sure about it and damn is there a lot more gray in there than I would have expected. But I actually got a compliment from a lady in the elevator today - first beard compliment. I've been getting plenty about the mohawk, though.

Shaving is starting to really wreck my face. That's pushing me toward not shaving. Which makes the eventual shaving that much worse. YAY.
My beard looks terrible anyhow. Looks great for a week or two and then I just look like some teenager that went into a coma for a few months.

God I can't wait until the goddamned beards go out of style. They look fucking disgusting.
In happier news, Mom is out of surgery and headed home soon.
