I also lament our lack of reboot policy but that's another issue.
What ?

We never force reboots, which are fairly mandatory in an Autodesk/ Adobe rich environment. It makes " turn it off then back on again" a legit solution to way too many issues. When you leave Autocad running for three days and have been in and out of 30+ files, wonky shit starts to happen.

Well quite ! I'm just a bit gobsmacked that's a policy.
In every other place I've been it's 'Shut that fucking thing off overnight.' For all kinds of reasons.

I'm part of the IT team for an engineering department and we don't have a reboot/shutoff policy. Quite the contrary, we need to run backups for ~60 people every night. Have to leave those things on.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Its faculty and staff. While the staff do store most of their data centrally on a file share, the faculty tend to run their machines like personal computers, where they hoard data that spans decades. Gigs and gigs of the stuff, not to mention archive email .pst files the size of carbuncles. Why don't we all just have their user profiles on line on a Windows domain you ask? Because my boss is an old unix/solaris crotchbeard and won't touch the stuff. Closest we come to a Windows domain is the samba3 domain we run for the staff machines.

I'm going to go with "engineers don't remember to save to the network for $1000, Alex" Ed: ok so I was off track. We had a similar problem with huge email boxes till we moved to the cloud. Now it's Microsoft problem. Heh. Well quite ! I'm just a bit gobsmacked that's a policy.

Wait, what? I meant policy in terms of enforced protocol. We tell people to shut them off, the majority just choose not to listen. Prior employers fixed this with an automatic reboot every night at 3 Much like laptop users who don't understand why their machines that were put into sleep mode and undocked don't automagically remember the net share mapping when redocked. "Why can't I find my files?"

Co-workers just asked a woman at work how her daughter is doing (daughter got in a serious car accident 2 week ago). Her monologue has now gone on for 15 minutes.

On the bright side, you learned a very valuable lesson in only 15 mins.

I got in trouble for telling my boss that the woman facilitating the sexual harassment training was hot. I need to work on the appropriateness of my sarcasm.

I really belong in : The Czech Republic
You're Czech at heart.
Residents of the Czech Republic are typical Europeans; they don't want to stand out in any way. The average Czech drinks very little coffee and does not use tablets to surf the Internet. Participation in religious events is something they would find unusual.
My closest soulmates are in : United Kingdom, Italy
I'm farthest from : Luxembourg, Sweden So I'm just here, existing.

To be funny as fuck? The first episode had me literally crying about mid-way in. The only point I think is to give HBO a Daily Show type show.

I hadn't really considered that. Don't get me wrong, it was great, but if you'd watched The Daily Show all week, it was kind of a rehash ? Maybe it's because he was so soon a writer, but the humour is just tooooo close right now.

Moving sucks. Moving twice within four months sucks worse. As such I've been without a computer, TV or internet at the new home for the last week and a half and it's slowly driving me mad.

I'm like so totally happy right now. This doesn't happen often, either. My sandals that I have been waiting for FOREVER finally arrived. The woman who makes these did a kickstarter but stopped it because she was offered outside funding. Anyway, they are the most awesome sandals in the world and I love them more than anything except my cats. They're right up there with my family! I'll be getting the tall ones next. I'm sure I shared them with you before but here's another pic of the ones I got: Drew - they go up to size 10 but the sizes are rather large. If you are a size 42 or even 43, I bet they'd fit. I'm not sure about 44, though.
