Does it work with HBO Go and Samsung Smart TVs? Because I am literally in the middle of bitching out Comcast for not being on the list of providers when I try to activate my brand new TV. I would love nothing more than to tell Comcast to go fuck themselves most vigorously.

So in our new house the seller had the whole house painted white prior to selling.  That includes painting all the trim with a latex based paint over the top of what was undoubtedly initially oil based, as this house was built in the 1950s.  So you can guess the rest-  the entire house is basically peeling free.  What is the best way to tackle this?  Sanding?  Scraping?  I've peeled some off of a couple of the doors, and if I have to do the whole hose like that it will take an eternity.  Also, for the lawyers in the group, could the seller have an exposure over an issue like this?  It seems to me that she should be liable for a shoddy fix like this.

Both.  The best part is if the older layer is still there and lead based, you've got all sorts of fun in removal on your hands.  I spent a month wet sanding and wet scraping everything in my kitchen on my first house due to the exact same problem.  I think I took off 6 layers of old paint and wallpaper...

It seems to me that she should be liable for a shoddy fix like this.
Good luck with that.  The Mickey Mouse shit I've seen in my last 2 houses I bought that was OBVIOUSLY a lazy\quick money grab attempt made me want to scream and in talking with the realtor, pretty much you're out of luck as almost all houses are bought "as is."  Just like buying a used car, if someone painted parts of it with a paint brush and it starts peeling off in sheets within a few weeks of ownership, it's now YOUR problem unless the sales contract says otherwise.

You need to look at your purchase contract to see if there are any misstatements in the disclosures or any warranties stated. But Selby is generally correct.

As I'm in the process of selling right now, I can tell you that in Texas it's an as-is contract unless you've added specific amendments.

That was the advice I gleaned from all the experts on 'the Internet'. I thought maybe they had the Internet in Asia, or that maybe some of those shifty immigrant types had sneaked online from America or Europe (or Peru), but maybe they were too busy being good at math and cooking delicious take out meals to help out with the soaked cell phone question. ]

I've always read you put it in rice to to attract Asians who will fix it....

Um Texas requires a sellers disclosure and you are required to disclose all repairs in excess of $500.  Foreclosures (and to some extent rentals) get away with "as is" because the seller isn't living in the property so may not be aware of the condition.  If you specifically cover something up and do not disclose it (ie you painted over lead based paint then did not disclose you had lead based paint) then you MAY be liable.  Also if the buyer can pin it on the sellers agent advising the seller to do this they MAY be liable as well.

P.S. - If it were me I would try power washing it but this may be a very bad thing with lead based paint so you should consult someone.

It's indoors, so no dice.   awesome, for real

On a sad note, I just found out that my college roommate and best friend got diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma last week.  They're cutting out his left kidney this coming week.  This sort of thing has ~70% five year survival rate, but it's still just terrible.  There were three of us that were really good friends my first two years of college.  The first of us died about 8 years ago from esophageal cancer.  He was a tech on a nuclear submarine, and I've always suspected that there was a leakage issue particularly when one of our subs was leaking radiation into Japanese coastal waters.  Then the second of us gets renal cell carcinoma.  I don't think that bodes well for me.   Ohhhhh, I see.

Sounds more like they didn't TSP/clean before they painted.

I don't think it needs a Smart TV to work (it is the smarts). Probably won't work for HBO Go until HBO Go is updated to support it, but I'll try it out when I get mine in the mail. You still have to have a sat/cable sub to use HBO Go though, they don't offer stand-alone subscriptions ala Netflix.

Yes, but it's still as-is.  That's included as part of the contract.  If you know it and you note it, you aren't liable for it later.  For lead-based paint all you have to do is say "I don't know" and you're good, unless you received a notice when you bought it.  If they don't test prior to purchase, it's on them.

As far as housing stuff goes, my whirlwind selling spree hit the slight snag of my AC crapping out.  There goes the paltry sum I was going to make on this place that I could put towards buying my parent's second place.  Also I cussed out a contractor over the phone with my bosses standing right there after wasting an hour explaining to them that I don't have time to do everything they want if they're going to keep swapping priorities and choosing a new project of the day to be important.  (Also dependencies.)

It's a shit week.

As an adjunct to the painting cheap thing: always ask for money to fix things when buying a house, never ask the homeowner to fix them before closing.

I had to rehang the screen door my dumbass agent asked the previous owner to fix, and two windows are still jacked up.

Still blows my mind the kid was trying to sell his house with two broken windows and a screen door hanging off the frame.

Renal cell carcinoma.  Bad shit, but very treatable if it's caught in stage I or stage II.  Obviously they wouldn't be operating if there were metastases, and the found no lymph node involvement so he should be okay.  Surgeons at the time of surgery didn't find anything else.  Five year survival rate for this situation is ~70%.

My power company sent me a Nest Thermostat (for signing a contract with them) and I just installed it. It was...really easy to install, I was surprised. (I'd been told it wouldn't be hard, since I had a newer thermostat anyways, but I'd never done it before).

Got it up and running in under 30 minutes (two updates and reboots) and I'm looking forward to seeing if it makes the house more comfortable. There's a couple of nifty summer features I hope will get the house a little drier and keep the air moving.

I bought a Nest but my current thermostat doesn't use a dedicated power line - and apparently I need one for the Nest. Haven't gone through the trouble of running that line yet, but the little playing around with the interface I did, it looks like it could be a nice gadget.

Mine doesn't use a dedicated power line. (Although a quick check with Nest says some do require it for the Nest to work. Weird. I wonder why some do and some don't).

You must have gotten unlucky. :) If I'd have needed wires run, I'd have had to pay for it.

I have found that a lot of very aggressive people tend to be police officers.  When I was spending time in the ER a lot dealing with prisoners the policemen that would bring them in typically made me very uncomfortable with their words and actions.
